1.0 Scope:

This procedure is applicable for tack welding to be deployed for butt groove joints of all longitudinal &
circumferential weld joints.

2.0 Responsibility:

Production and QAC/welding engineer shall be responsible for its implementation.

3.0 Procedure:

3.1 Preparation:
3.1.1 Clean the gas cut weld edges by grinding to remove the oxides.
3.1.2 Carry out inspection of weld edge preparation as per QAP.
3.1.3 Prepare bridge support plates of same material as per job, preferably of same thk.

3.2 Set-up tacking:


3.2.1 For tack welding deploy qualified welder & refer WTS for weld parameters.
3.2.2 For both L & C Seam set-up ,bridge plate supports shall be welded first with 6mm(min.)
fillet size & 50 – 100 mm length from both sides. Then groove tacks
shall be welded.
3.2.3 L-Seam set-up shall be done at both ends first & towards center of the joint.
3.2.4 C-Seam set-up
3.2.4.1 Minimum two rollers shall be placed at the end of each shell segment to
to be tacked maintaining minimum overhang.
3.2.4.2 After proper alignment of shells, bridge support plates shall be tacked in the
sequence opposite to each other.
3.2.4.3 For Water drum minimum four support plates & for Steam drum minimum
Six support plates shall be welded.
3.2.4.4 After completion of bridge plate welding. Groove tacks shall be welded .
3.2.4.5 The first pass of the tacks shall be welded by 3.15 mm Dia. electrodes
& then by 4.0 mm dia. Electrodes to complete weld deposition of 10 mm.
The tack length shall be 75 - 100 mm .The distance between two tacks
shall be 500 mm max.
3.2.4.6 Preheating at temp. of 100C before welding ,interpass temp.of 250C
shall be maintained (as per WTS).

3.3 Inspection :
Set-up inspection shall be carried out by visual & DPT.
