Reporting Statements

Push the tense one stage to the past:


Direct Reported
Past simple Past Perfect

Reporting Statements
Direct: “I don’t know what this is.”
Reported: She said she didn’t know what that was.
Direct: “We haven’t talked for a while.”
Reported: He said they hadn’t talked for a while.
Direct: “I’m thinking about it.”
Reported: He told me he was thinking about it.
Direct: “We have been running this school for ten years.”
Reported: They said they had been running that school
for ten years.
Reporting Statements

Modal verbs:
Direct Reported
Will Would
Can Could
Change to:
May Might
Must Had to
Might, should, could, would Generally no change
Reporting Statements
Direct: “I will have finished the course in a week.”
Reported: She said she would have finished the
course in a week.
Direct: “We can reach an agreement tonight.”
Reported: He said they could reach an agreement that night.
Direct: “He may have thought about the job.”
Reported: He told me he might have thought about the job.
Direct: “We must send the invitations now.”
Reported: They said they had to send the invitations then.
Reporting Questions
Wh- Questions:
1. Push the tense to the past.
2. Switch syntax from question to statement.
D: “What time is it?”
R: He asked me what time it was.
D: “When are they going to arrive?”
R: She asked when they were going to arrive.
Reporting Questions
Yes/No Questions:
1. Push the tense to the past.
2. Switch syntax from question to statement.
3. Add If or Whether
D: “Do you know him?”
R: He asked me if I knew him.
D: “Did you find a good hotel?”
R: She asked whether we had found a good hotel.
Reporting Questions

We don’t have to push back the tense if:


1. The statement is still true.
2. Reporting verb is in present.
D: “I have three brothers.”
R: She said she (had) has three brothers.
D: “I’ll be there in 5 minutes.”
R: He says he’ll be here in 5 minutes.
Reporting Functions
Request:
D: “Could you give me a hand please?”
R: He asked me to give her a hand.
D: “Could you tell me what time it is?”
R: He asked me the time.
Suggestion: (subjunctive)
D: We could go see a film tonight.
R: She suggested we (should) see a film that night.
D: Let’s have something to drink.
R: He suggested we had something to drink.
Reporting Functions
Promise:
D: “I’ll never lie to you.”
R: He promised not to ever lie to me.
Advice:
D: “You’d better see a doctor.”
R: They advised me to see a doctor.
Demand: (subjunctive)
D: “The president must respond to the accusations.
R: They demanded the president respond to the accusations.
Reporting Verbs

D: “And you should have an ID.”


R: She added that I should have an ID.
D: “Yes, I killed him.”
R: He confessed (that) he had killed them.
D: “I wouldn’t go in if I were you.”
R: She warned us not to go in.
Reporting Verbs

D: “Yes, the rumours are true.”


R: He confirmed that the rumours were
true.
D: “Even if you answer half of them right,
you’ll still pass.”
R: She reassured me that even if I
answered half of the right, I’d still pass.
