Reporting Statements
Direct: “I will have finished the course in a week.”
Reported: She said she would have finished the
course in a week.
Direct: “We can reach an agreement tonight.”
Reported: He said they could reach an agreement that night.
Direct: “He may have thought about the job.”
Reported: He told me he might have thought about the job.
Direct: “We must send the invitations now.”
Reported: They said they had to send the invitations then.
Reporting Questions
Wh- Questions:
1. Push the tense to the past.
2. Switch syntax from question to statement.
D: “What time is it?”
R: He asked me what time it was.
D: “When are they going to arrive?”
R: She asked when they were going to arrive.

Yes/No Questions:
1. Push the tense to the past.
2. Switch syntax from question to statement.
3. Add If or Whether
D: “Do you know him?”
R: He asked me if I knew him.
