My name is Seth Kurzynski and I will be your son/daughter’s math teaching for this coming semester!
For a little background about me, I am currently finishing my education at Loras College, which is
located in Dubuque, IA, and I will be spending my last semester student teaching at St. Joseph School and
Rice Lake High School. I was born and raised in Rice Lake and I am very excited to be back in the area
Required Supplies
As far as what your child will need for my class, I am asking that they have either a one subject notebook
and folder or a binder with loose sleeve paper as well as pens and pencils. Everything else they need is
provided but if they want to bring their own calculator, protractor, ruler, etc., they are more than welcome
to do so.
My Expectations
I will go over this with your child in class but I believe it is important for parents and guardians to know
what is expected of their children when they come into my classroom. I believe that my job is to teach
your child state required math content while making it as engaging and meaningful for them as possible.
I would like to invite you and your child to hold me accountable to this goal as I believe all children
deserve a teacher who will work to make the time they have with their students as valuable for the
students as possible. If you or your child ever feel that I am not living up to this, please respectfully reach
out to me and we can discuss further, (contact info is at the end of the letter). With these expectations for
myself, I ask that your child shows up to my class each day ready to learn through struggle. This is an
idea I will talk a lot about with your child, but I believe that struggle is necessary for any worthwhile
growth in life so it must be present in the classroom. This means that things will be hard at times for your
child and they may be frustrated at themselves or me or possibly both, but I ask that you encourage them
to continue to persevere through the struggle. The other rule I would like to inform you of is respect.
Respect is of the utmost importance to me as I believe when there is mutual respect between a teacher and
their students, learning will be much smoother and easier for all. I will talk with the students about what
respect looks like and I will have them all sign an agreement that they will be respectful learners in my
class. If they do not remain accountable to this I will remind them of our agreement three times and if
that doesn’t change the behavior I will have the student step into the hall and we will discuss what isn’t
going right. If that attempt fails then they will be sent to the principal’s office and you will receive a call
about their behavior. I say this so there can be full transparency between you, your child and I about how
Grading/Late Work/Absences
In terms of grading, I operate on a standard percentage grading scale meaning students will be graded on
their work and receive a grade A-F. I do not want students main focus to be on their grades but rather on
their learning and I believe that this grading scale can be used to effectively accomplish that while
preparing them for high school when grades matter a lot more. I will have clear dates when assignments
are due for your child but if work is turned in late I will take off 10% for each day they turn in an
assignment late. I believe students should be allowed the chance to turn something in but similar to taxes,
they will receive a penalty for turning something in late. In terms of absences, I work on a case by case
basis with what your child will need to do to make up what we did in class. I don’t have any set rules as
the length of absence plays a large role but I will be fair in giving them enough time to do the work
Thank you for taking the time to look over this! I am very excited to have your child in class and I’m
excited to see what this new semester will bring! Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or
concerns.
