Ielts Task1 Vocabulary 1 Student

The line graph shows the income from agriculture in Latvia over a 20-year period from 1982 to 2003. It had an initial upward trend, rising dramatically from 0.3 in 1982 to 1.9 in 1993. However, the trend changed pace in 1995, continuing to rise but insignificantly. The income peaked at 4.3 billion in 2000 before declining, falling to 3.8 and then plateauing for 12 months before plummeting to just over 1.5 in 2003. In conclusion, despite a significant decrease, agriculture still generated a rather high income for the country.

4. What is the general trend you can see in the graph?
5. What is another way of saying that something goes in a downward direction?
6. So, how can we describe the general trend of this graph?

We could say:
The graph shows a decline in the number of books sold.
7. This information is a little incomplete. Why?
8. What is the starting point?
9. What is the end point?

10. Do you know of another way of saying this time period?

 The graph shows a decline in the number of grammar books sold over an eight-year period.
Is this sentence TRUE or FALSE?

Compound Adjectives
A compound adjective is when a hyphen is used to join two or more words together to make an
adjective.
 He works a forty-hour week. (There is NO S after hour)
 He went on a three-week vacation. (There is no S after week)
 It is a four-month contract. (Again, no S after month)

B. Change the following sentences to include a compound adjective:

1. Her daughter is five months old.
2. There was a difference of 20 seconds.
3. The document had 7 pages.
4. The class lasted two hours.

C. Look at the graph again and read the two statements.

 The graph shows the number of books sold has dropped.
 The graph shows a drop in the number of books sold.

How much of a drop was it? Was it by a large amount or a small amount?
.
D. Look at these two words to describe the trend: Considerable and Considerably

In each statement add the word considerable OR the word considerably in its correct

position
Where does each word go? Why?
The number of books sold has dropped _________________.
The graph shows a _____ _________ drop in the number of books sold.

The word order is normally verb + adverb.

Some examples…
 It dropped considerably.
 She walked slowly.
 He ate quickly.
We also know considerably is an adverb because it ends in –LY. Most adverbs, not all, end in –
LY.
 A slow decline.
 A sharp increase.
Considerable, slow, and sharp all describe the trend. They are adjectives. Adjectives go before
a noun.
WHY did we include these highlighted words in each sentence?

BECAUSE
You have to imagine that the examiner cannot see the graph so you need to give a detailed
description by saying how things changed and by including numbers to state these changes.

Accurate descriptions
The price of chocolate rose.
How do you imagine the graph to be?
Is it like Graph A or Graph B in the chart below?

Is there a difference?

slightly (as in Graph ______) or sharply (as in Graph ____).
