1 Foreword
(Edition 10.2014)
The content of this guide has been divided into two section.
The first section contains information and important tips about
“towing a trailer”. For example, technical requirements for towing
or the function of the towing control module are described.
The second section contains tables that list towing weights, in‐
cluding braked, unbraked and tongue weight, grouped according
to engine. If possible, the requirements that must be met before
the towing weight may be increased are also explained.
Volkswagen vehicles are designed according to high safety
standards.
We recommend to use only replacement parts identified as Orig‐
inal Volkswagen parts. These parts are known to be reliable, safe
and suitable.
Other parts on the market have not been assessed according to
these standards. This includes parts that may have TÜV approval
or that are licensed. The vehicle manufacturer is not liable if such
parts are installed.

2.1 Factory-Installed Trailer Hitch

If the vehicle was already delivered from the factory with a trailer
hitch, all of the technical and legal requirements for towing a trailer
have already been taken into account.
Note that a »13-pin« trailer socket has been installed in many
models since the beginning of 1988 instead of the conventional
»7-pin« socket. This new socket allows additional electrical con‐
sumers in the trailer to be connected, such as back-up lamps. This
was not possible with the previous 7-pin socket.

2.5 Towing Recognition Control Module -

J345-
General Information
The Towing Recognition Control Module - J345- recognizes “trail‐
er mode” when there is a power decrease of at least 5 W1) and
transmits this information to various control modules via the CAN
data bus.
The Vehicle Electrical System Control Module - J519- and the
Comfort System Central Control Module - J393- supply the Tow‐
ing Recognition Control Module - J519- with information via the
CAN data bus.

J345- , Retrofitting
Retrofitting a Towing Recognition Control Module - J345- ap‐
proved by Volkswagen is possible, but it can pose problems due
to the connection with the vehicle CAN data bus. The control
module must then be coded in “Guided Fault Finding” using the
⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.

Note

Installation of control module solutions that are available from

third parties and are not approved by Volkswagen is not recom‐
mended. Installing such equipment voids the warranty. Generally,
these are connected to the tail lamps and not integrated into the
vehicle electrical system. This can result in a misdiagnosis from
the lamp monitoring function or to malfunctions. Also, dimmed
bulbs such as combined brake and tail lamps cannot be activated.

The coolant temperature gauge must always be monitored close‐

ly. If the needle in the gauge moves high into the hot zone, reduce
speed immediately. It may be necessary to take a break to allow
the engine to cool. When doing this, let the engine run at idle for
approximately 2 minutes to prevent heat buildup.

Note

♦ In vehicles with an A/C system, switching the system off will

reduce the load on the engine cooling system. This also im‐
proves vehicle acceleration and makes passing other vehicles
safer.
♦ If the cooling system is not enhanced, the seller must inform
the buyer when selling the vehicle.

2.7 Exterior Rearview Mirror

If the traffic behind the trailer cannot be seen in the standard ex‐
terior rearview mirrors, additional exterior mirrors must be instal‐
led. Both exterior mirrors must be installed on folding mounts and
adjusted to provide a sufficient range of vision behind the vehicle.

2.8 Reinforced Shock Absorbers and Coil

Springs
♦ Reinforced shock absorbers and coil springs on the vehicle
rear axle reduce pitching motions between the vehicle and the
trailer. If not already installed in the factory, these shock ab‐
sorbers and springs can often be retrofitted at authorized

5 Tongue Weight Specifications

The tongue weight specifications on the trailer hitch type label are
inspection values and only valid for the hitch. The permitted
tongue weight for the vehicle may be less and it must not be ex‐

•= Never run the engine unless the work area is well ventilated. Carbon monoxide (CO) kills.

•= Always observe good workshop practices. Wear goggles when you operate machine tools or work with acid. Wear
goggles, gloves and other protective clothing whenever the job requires working with harmful substances.

•= Tie long hair behind your head. Do not wear a necktie, a scarf, loose clothing, or a necklace when you work near
machine tools or running engines. If your hair, clothing, or jewelry were to get caught in the machinery, severe
injury could result.

•= Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Some fasteners are designed to be used
only once and are unreliable and may fail if used a second time. This includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts,
washers, circlips and cotter pins. Always follow the recommendations in this manual - replace these fasteners with
new parts where indicated, and any other time it is deemed necessary by inspection.

•= Illuminate the work area adequately but safely. Use a portable safety light for working inside or under the vehicle.
Make sure the bulb is enclosed by a wire cage. The hot filament of an accidentally broken bulb can ignite spilled
fuel or oil.

•= Friction materials such as brake pads and clutch discs may contain asbestos fibers. Do not create dust by
grinding, sanding, or by cleaning with compressed air. Avoid breathing asbestos fibers and asbestos dust.
Breathing asbestos can cause serious diseases such as asbestosis or cancer, and may result in death.

•= Finger rings should be removed so that they cannot cause electrical shorts, get caught in running machinery, or be
crushed by heavy parts.

•= Before starting a job, make certain that you have all the necessary tools and parts on hand. Read all the
instructions thoroughly; do not attempt shortcuts. Use tools that are appropriate to the work and use only
replacement parts meeting Volkswagen specifications. Makeshift tools, parts and procedures will not make good
repairs.

•= Catch draining fuel, oil or brake fluid in suitable containers. Do not use empty food or beverage containers that
might mislead someone into drinking from them. Store flammable fluids away from fire hazards. Wipe up spills at
once, but do not store the oily rags, which can ignite and burn spontaneously.

•= Use pneumatic and electric tools only to loosen threaded parts and fasteners. Never use these tools to tighten
fasteners, especially on light alloy parts. Always use a torque wrench to tighten fasteners to the tightening torque
listed.
