Geddy Lee Gear

Geddy Lee's early bass equipment from the mid-1960s to 1973 included an acoustic guitar, a Conora bass, and various small amps. He then acquired a Fender Precision Bass, Hagstrom bass, and Sunn 2000S bass head and cabinets. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, his bass rig evolved to include various Fender and Rickenbacker basses paired with Ampeg and Sunn amps. His keyboard setup also grew more sophisticated over time as he incorporated synthesizers like the Mini-Moog and Oberheim.

Early history mid-60's to 1973

Geddy's first instrument was an acoustic guitar of an unknown manufacturer. It had palm
trees painted on it, and can be seen in the picture of him inside the Test For Echo album. He
would play it when jamming with friends, until one day it was decided that Ged would be
"demoted" to the rhythm section and asked to play bass. His first bass was a Conora. He had
a small unknown amp, and would also borrow various Ace and Silvertone amps.
His first "real" amp was a Traynor combo amp with 2x15' speakers. Around early 1968 he
bought a Hagstrom bass.
In late 1969 he traded this bass in for a dark sunburst '69 Fender Precision, which would be
his main bass for a few years. His basses had La Bella flatwound strings until 1972, when he
started using Rotosound Swing Bass roundwound strings. Around that same time Geddy
bought a Sunn 2000 S bass head with two 2x15" cabinets, which the speakers were replaced
with SRO 15" speakers. This amp would stay with Geddy for several years.

(Note: Geddy would always use the same amp setup in the studio as he did live. He would
also have a separate feed going into the mxing board while recording, and on tour, would
have a separate feed going directly to the soundboard, as well.)

Around the time, between Caress of Steel and 2112, the Precision was remodeled into a
teardrop shape and given a Fender Jazz pickup in the bridge position, and it then recieved a
pinkish/purple paintjob. It was wired in stereo so it could be used in the same manner the
Rickenbacker was.
