Determination of Saponification Value of Castor Oil
Determination of Saponification Value of Castor Oil
Theory-
Saponification value is defined as the number of mg of KOH required to completely hydrolyse
(saponify) one gm of oil fat.
In practice a known amount of the oil or fat is refluxed with excess amount of Std. alcoholic
potash solution and the unused alkali is titrated against a std. acid.
Requirements-
Chemicals- 0.5N HCl, castor oil, phenolpthelin, 0.5N KOH.
Apparatus-
Conical flusk, Reflux and condenser.
Reaction-
Procedure-
1. About 2g of the given castoroil is taken in a conical flask and weighted accurately.
2. Castor is dissolved in 25ml of 0.5N alc. KOH solution.
3. Then the reaction mixture is refluxed using a water condenser on a water bath for 30
min.
4. The resulting solution is cooled and titrated against a 0.5N HCl solution adding 1ml of
phenolpthalin.
5. The number of ml of acid required is noted (a).
6. An exatcly mark blank experiment is performed. Number of ml of HCl required is noted
(b).
Observation-
Sample No Initial reading Final reading Difference (mL)
(mL) (mL)
Excess KOH A 0 0.5 33 mL
remaining
For blank B 0 33.5
Calculation-
Saponification value= [(b-a)*0.02805*1000]/W (gram)
= [33*0.02805*1000]/1
=925.65
Conclusion-
Saponification value of castor oil is 925.65.
