1 INTRODUCTION

2 E-Learning is utilizing electronic innovations to access educational

3 programs. It pertains to a course, program or degree that's completed through

4 online. Presently, e-learning is motivating the world social orders at large. In this

5 trying time, it is difficult to urge method of instructional delivery in traditional mode

6 due to Covid-19 pandemic and other social, financial or interconnected issues

7 within the society. But everyone has a wants to continue its education inside

8 conceivable means. E-learning makes education adaptable since there's no

9 restriction of time and space. So, e-learning makes learning less demanding to

10 learn. The advancement of technology is rapidly changing the social standards.

11 Taught and uneducated masses utilize technology as often as possible for

12 delight and benefits. It is observed that diverse social media apps play a critical

13 part in instruction. These applications pulled in students and connect them with

14 diverse parts of the world and because of this, variety of instructional delivery has

15 created and one of that is e-learning (Anshari, Alas, & Guan, 2016).

16 The COVID-19 has resulted in schools shut all across the world. Globally,

17 over 1.2 billion children are out of the classroom. As a result, education has

18 changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is

19 undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. Research suggests that online

20 learning has been shown to increase retention of information, and take less time,

21 meaning the changes coronavirus have caused might be here to stay. In

22 Denmark, children up to the age of 11 are returning to nurseries and

2
1

23 schools after initially closing on 12 March, but in South Korea students are

24 responding to online. With this sudden shift away from the classroom in many

25 parts of the globe, some are wondering whether the adoption of online learning

26 will continue to persist post-pandemic, and how such a shift would impact the

27 worldwide education market (Li & Lalani, 2020).

28 In the Philippines, in response to the recent developments and directive of

29 President Rodrigo R. Duterte through Proclamation No. 922 series of 2020, the

30 Commission is furnishing the CHED COVID-19 Advisory No. 3, for information

31 and guidance of all higher education institutions (HEI) and CHED central and

32 regional offices. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) issues the

33 advisory to guide HEIs in their response to the Covid19 outbreak that includes e-

34 learning as a mode of instructional delivery (Commission on Higher Education,

35 2020).

36 Locally, many universities and colleges here in General Santos City also

37 use e-learning as a mode of instructional delivery to its students. As a student

38 who has enrolled in an online course, the researcher wants to know the impact of

39 e-learning to the academic performance of the students most specially the

40 BSED-Mathematics students of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges because

41 the result of this study would benefit the school, students and the researcher

42 himself.

43

44

45 Rationale of the Study

46 Because of pandemic, almost all of the schools in the world are forced to

47 use online instruction instead of face-to-face instruction. The advent of online

48 education has made it possible for students with busy lives and limited flexibility

49 to obtain a quality education and made it possible to offer classes worldwide

50 through using the internet connection (Paul and Jefferson, 2016). Even with

51 these advantages, online learning still has its drawbacks. Many critics argue that

52 the online learning environment is not delivering equal or comparable educational

53 experiences for learners (Dynarski, 2018). Still, online education is the best

54 option to deliver educational instruction to the students most especially in this

55 Covid-19 crisis.

56 Moreover, online education is quickly becoming a major phenomenon

57 around the world with the ease and convenience it offers to the learner,

58 especially during this pandemic. United States of America gets the top spots in

59 online education in the world today with hundreds of online colleges and

60 thousands of online courses available to students (ICEF Monitor, 2020). Besides,

61 University chiefs laud the success of rapid online pivot but say campus-based

62 programs and face to face instruction will not disappear any time soon

63 (Ross,2020).

64 Meanwhile, almost all the universities and colleges in the Philippines are

65 using online as a mode of learning in line with the guidelines on the

66 implementation of flexible learning of the Commission on Higher Education

4
3

67 (Rappler,2020). Because of the risks of the coronavirus, face-to-face classes

68 have been suspended for the rest of the year. Thus, this had prompted schools

69 to adopt distance learning approaches, such as shifting to online or modular

70 based learning. According to the national enrollment data showed by the

71 Department of Education as of Aug. 25, 2020, it showed that the total number of

72 enrollees for the upcoming school year has reached 23, 671, 227 nationwide for

73 Kindergarten to Grade 12, including Alternative Learning System (ALS) and non-

74 graded learners with disabilities (Manila Bulletin,2020).

75 The reason why the researcher wants to study this problem is that it is

76 timely and relevant and the researcher experiences this kind of situation.

77 Enrolling in an online class is a new experience for the researcher and he wants

78 to know how e-learning affects the academic performance of the students. The

79 researcher also wants to know if whether one teaching modality is significantly

80 more effective than others.

81 This study aimed at determining the impact of e-learning in BSED-

82 Mathematics students enrolled in the school year 2020-2021 of Ramon

83 Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. The researcher attempts to see if the student's

84 academic performance has been affected by the instructional medium.

85 Statement of the Problem

86 The true potential of a person lies in his education and knowledge. When a

87 person is educated and acquires good awareness of his environment it will

88 transform his personality. With the help of computer and internet connection

5
4

89 student can access any course they wish desire to learn from any part of the

90 globe and that gives birth to the new mode of instructional delivery which is the e-

91 learning (Digital Teacher Hyderabad, 2020).

92 The study aimed at determining the impact of e-learning on the academic

93 performance of BSED-Mathematics students who enrolled for the school year

94 2020-2021 at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. Moreover, it aimed at

95 investigating the responses of BSED-Mathematics students to assess the impact

96 of e-learning on their academic performance.

97 The Purpose and Research Questions

98 The research used a qualitative case study to answer the questions that

99 frame this study. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of e-

100 learning on the academic performance of BSED-Mathematics students who

101 enrolled for the school year 2020-2021 in Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges.

102 Moreover, this study also investigates the response of BSED-Mathematics

103 students to assess the impact of e-learning on their academic performance and

104 use such data to improve the quality of education that the students will receive.

105 Furthermore, this case study would be beneficial for everyone since it would

106 be part of improving education. It would provide insights to understand online

107 education provided to students. With the increasing popularity of online courses,

108 it is necessary to evaluate the quality of education they provide to the students,

109 and a constant effort to improve these online courses has become significant.

110 Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

6
5

111 1. How does e-learning impact the academic performance of the

112 participants?

113 Significance of the Study

114 The result of this study would help the following:

115 School Administrators. The result of this research would serve as

116 reference for them to have access on the academic performance of the students

117 in e-learning. This would provide an idea of conceptualizing a tool for school to

118 address the possible problems that the students experience in e-learning. The

119 gathered data would provide a basis of improving their skills in managing and

120 giving quality time for parents so that they can be their direct partners in

121 maintaining quality education among learners.

122 Teachers. This research would provide insights and would help them

123 formulate plans that are useful for their quest in addressing problems on e-

124 learning to improve their student’s academic performance.

125 Students. This research would provide them information about the possible

126 effects of e-learning to their academic performance.

127 Parents. This research would help them to become more aware about the

128 academic performance of their child and how e-learning would affect their

129 performance in school.

7
6

130 Future researchers. This study would provide them more ideas and

131 avenues for further research which can help them in their future investigation

132 about e-learning issues and concerns.

133 The researcher. He would be able to develop the values of patience and

134 hard work as he embarks into this endeavor. He may gain knowledge on the

135 procedure of conducting a study of this kind. Moreover, he would learn to

136 understand and appreciate this chosen field of profession and would know how

137 to improve his life based on his difficult experiences.

138 Scope and Delimitation

139 This case study determined the impact of e-learning on the academic

140 performance of BSED-Mathematics students from the school year 2020-2021 at

141 Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. The respondents of this study were

142 chosen from 2nd and 3rd-year BSED-Mathematics students of Ramon

143 Magsaysay Memorial Colleges for School Year 2020- 2021 who took the

144 subjects online.

145 Specifically, eight (8) BSED-Mathematics students were selected randomly

146 from the 2nd year and 3rd year, two male and two female participants from the

147 2nd year while, two female and two male participants in the 3rd year. Purposive

148 sampling was employed.

149 Also, the participants underwent a one-on-one interview that focuses on

150 their experiences with e-learning and how it affects their academic performance.
8
7

151 The researcher used a validated researcher-made instrument to ask the

152 participants.

153 Lastly, this study did not consider all the aspects of e-learning influences,

154 instead restricted to those elements of e-learning that affect performance in one

155 way or the other.

169 PROCEDURES

170 Qualitative Methodology Design

171 The study used a qualitative approach. According to Bhandari (2020),

172 qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g.,

173 text, video, or audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can be

174 used to gather in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas for

175 research. Qualitative research is commonly used in the humanities and social

176 sciences, in subjects such as education. Qualitative research is used to

177 understand how people experience the world. While there are many approaches

178 to qualitative research, they tend to be flexible and focus on retaining rich

179 meaning when interpreting data.

180 Moreover, qualitative research is used to gain an understanding of

181 underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the

182 problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative

183 research. Qualitative Research is also used to uncover trends in thought and

184 opinions, and dive deeper into the problem. Qualitative data collection methods

185 vary using unstructured or semi-structured techniques. Some common methods

186 include focus groups (group discussions), individual interviews, and

187 participation/observations. The sample size is typically small, and respondents

188 are selected to fulfill a given quota (DeFranzo, 2020).

189 Also, this study used case study design. Case study is an intensive analysis

190 of an individual unit (such as a person or community) stressing developmental

10
9

191 factors in relation to environment (Merriam-Webster, 2020). Johnson &

192 Christensen (2016) defined case studies are in-depth analyses of

193 single, restricted entities known as cases.

194 The purpose of case study is to understand one person or situation in great

195 depth. Its focus is one case or a few case in its/their natural setting. Data are

196 collected through observation, interviews, documents and other sources. Data

197 are analyze through categorization and interpretation of data into common

198 themes, and synthesis into an overall portrait of the case (Christensen, 2016).

199 Research Respondent

200 The respondents of this study were chosen from the 2nd and 3rd-year

201 BSED-Mathematics students of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges for

202 School Year 2020- 2021 who took the subjects online.

203 Specifically, eight (8) BSED-Mathematics students were selected randomly

204 from the 2nd year and 3rd year, two male and two female participants from the

205 2nd year, and two female and two male participants in the 3rd year. Purposive

206 sampling was employed.

207 Research Sites and Purposeful Sampling

208 The study was conducted at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges,

209 General Santos City on the school year 2020-2021, specifically at Teacher’s

210 Education Program. The College is equipped with online education systems and

211 is designed for distant learners that wanted to continue learning without
11
10

212 disruption most especially in the event of climate change, transportation

213 difficulties, and the COVID-19 pandemic. RMMC is a privately owned non-

214 sectarian college in General Santos City. The college offers a range of two-year

215 Associate's and four-year Bachelor's degrees in Accountancy, the Liberal Arts,

216 Business, Engineering, Information Technology, Education, Social Work, and

217 Criminology, as well as a Graduate Program in Education. The case study used

218 purposeful sampling. Purposeful sampling is a sampling technique that

219 qualitative researchers use to recruit participants who can provide in-depth and

220 detailed information about the phenomenon under investigation. It is highly

221 subjective and determined by the qualitative researcher generating the qualifying

222 criteria each participant must meet to be considered for the research study

223 (Statistic Solution, 2020).

224 Specifically, it used homogeneous sampling. Homogeneous sampling is a

225 purposive sampling technique that aims to achieve a homogeneous sample; that

226 is, a sample whose units (e.g., people, cases, etc.) share the same (or very

227 similar) characteristics or traits (e.g., a group of people that are similar in terms of

228 age, gender, background, occupation, etc.). In this respect, homogeneous

229 sampling is the opposite of maximum variation sampling. A homogeneous

230 sample is often chosen when the research question that is being address is

231 specific to the characteristics of the particular group of interest, which is

232 subsequently examined in detail (Lund Research Ltd, 2012).

233
12
11

234 Data Analysis and Procedure

235 Before gathering the data the researcher prepared a validated questionnaire

236 with the assistance and guidance of his adviser for the researcher to be

237 coordinated objectively in the way of interviews and discussions.

238 Individual interview was administered to gather information from the point of

239 views of the participants who have experienced e-learning course in calculus

240 who are enrolled in the school year 2020-2021 at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial

241 Colleges. Because of Covid-19 pandemic, the researcher also utilized online

242 platforms to interview the participants like Google Meet, Messenger and Zoom to

243 minimize physical interaction and to follow the safety protocols set by the

244 government.

245 Open-ended questionnaire was applied in conducting the interview. Open-

246 ended questions are free-form survey questions that allow respondents to

247 answer in open text format so that they can answer based on their complete

248 knowledge, feeling, and understanding. It means that the response to this

249 question is not limited to a set of options. Unlike a closed-ended question that

250 leaves survey responses limited and narrows to the given options, open-ended

251 question allows you to probe deep into the respondent’s answers, gaining

252 valuable information about the subject at hand. The responses to these

253 questions can be used to attain detailed and descriptive information on a topic

254 (QuestionPro, 2020).

13
12

255 The collection of data for this study started from January 2021- March 2021.

256 The researcher wrote a letter of permission from the Program Director of

257 Education Department before conducting the interview to the selected

258 participants.

259 The researcher oriented the participants about the study and the procedures

260 of the interview. The researcher also assured the participants about the

261 confidentiality of their data and assured them that the researcher would not

262 disclose the said information to any third parties. In this way, the participants

263 were able to freely express their opinions and ideas. The researcher also

264 informed the participants that the interview will be recorded through video and

265 audio for the understanding and clarity of the discussion and also for the

266 researcher to review and take note the important points of the interview.

267 In this case study, non-directive interview was used. Non-directive Interview

268 is a type of interview where the interviewer acts like a catalyst. The researcher

269 prompted the respondents to give information on the topic under investigation.

270 The respondents were given free environment so that they can express

271 their views freely. The researcher simply supports the views expressed by the

272 respondent instead of approving or disapproving them (Ahmad O. , 2012).

273 Thematic Analysis

274 The study used thematic analysis in interpreting the data. According to

275 Caulfield (2020), thematic analysis is a method of analyzing qualitative data. It is

276 usually applied to a set of texts, such as interview transcripts. The researcher
14
13

277 closely examines the data to identify common themes – topics, ideas and

278 patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly. Thematic analysis is a good

279 approach to research where you’re trying to find out something about people’s

280 views, opinions, knowledge, experiences or values from a set of qualitative data

281 for example, interview transcripts, social media profiles, or survey responses.

282 Researcher’s Role and Potential Ethical Issues

283 The study focused on the impact of e-learning to academic performance of

284 BSED-Mathematics students of RMMC. The participants were those who

285 personally experienced taking the subjects online. The researcher ensured the

286 integrity and quality of this case study. The researcher followed all the ethical

287 standards and sought approval of the school and the participants involved in the

288 study.

289 The researcher made sure that the participants had protection from physical

290 or psychological harm (including loss of dignity, loss of autonomy, and loss of

291 self-esteem), protection of privacy and confidentiality and protection against

292 unjustifiable deception.

293 Inform consent was strictly observed in the study. Informed consent is

294 defined as the act of participants or their parents or legal guardians agreeing to

295 participate in a study once they know the nature and what their involvement will

296 include (Johnson & Christensen, 2016). The participants should understand how

297 their data were used, stored and analyzed. All research participants must give

298 their permission to be part of a study and they must be given pertinent
15
14

299 information to make an “informed” consent to participate. This means the

300 researcher has provided his research participants with everything they need to

301 know about the study to make an “informed” decision about participating in his

302 research. Guardians must give consent for minors to participate. In addition to

303 guardian consent, minors over age 7 (the age may vary) must also give their

304 consent to participate (Siegle, 2019).

305 Furthermore, the researcher upheld the confidentiality of all the data and did

306 not disclose any information to the outside party that would harm the participants.

307 The researcher made sure that the implication of the study would be understood

308 by the participants.

309 Method of Validity

310 The case study used descriptive validity. According to Johnson &

311 Christensen (2016),descriptive validity is the factual accuracy of the account

312 provided in the research. The researcher must be sure not to distort, manipulate,

313 or fabricate events based on inferences.

314 Moreover, Thomson (2011) defines descriptive validity as the accuracy of

315 the data. The data must accurately reflect what the participant has said or done.

316 The reporting of the data must also reflect the same accuracy, which means that

317 the transcription is an accurate account of what was said or the transcription of

318 the videotapes portrays the unfolding of events in an accurate manner. Without

319 an accurate account of the formative data all else is irrelevant.

320

15

321 FINDINGS

322 This chapter presents the findings which consist of the description of the

323 individuals in the study and the analysis of themes.

324 Description of the Participants

325 There were eight (8) BSED-Mathematics students who underwent the in-

326 depth interview. The participants of the in-depth interview were select 2 nd year

327 and 3rd year BSED-Mathematics students from Ramon Magsaysay Memorial

328 Colleges. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the researcher met the participants online

329 via messenger since face to face interaction is not yet allowed. The eight

330 participants were selected since all of them experienced e-learning this school

331 year. Moreover, code was assigned to each participant to maintain confidentiality.

332 P1- is a 19-year old female 2nd year BSED-Mathematics student of Ramon

342 P6- is a 21-year old male and 3rd year BSED-Mathematics student of

343 Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges.

344 P7- is a 22-year old female and 3 rd year BSED-Mathematics student of

345 Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges.

346 P8- is a 21-year old male and 3rd year BSED-Mathematics student of

347 Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges.

348 Analysis of themes

349 Thematic analysis is a method of analyzing qualitative data. It is usually

350 applied to a set of texts, such as interview transcripts. The researcher closely

351 examines the data to identify common themes – topics, ideas and patterns of

352 meaning that come up repeatedly (Caulfield, 2020). Themes are important

353 patterns in the description of phenomena that is linked with a specific research

354 question. The researcher conducted an in-depth interview among the eight

355 BSED-Mathematics students at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges to gather

356 the data needed to describe the impact of e-learning to their academic

357 performance.

358 Moreover, the researcher transcribed the entire interview patiently, and then

359 read the transcription thoroughly. After that, the researcher generated codes

360 based on the responses of the participants. All the codes which previously

361 generated were converted into themes. Moreover, with the help of the codes,

362 some themes and sub-themes were also created. This process is usually done
18
17

363 with the help of the visuals so that a reader can take an in-depth look at first

364 glance itself (Nicolas, 2020).

365 After that, the researcher classified the data as to its category and

366 relevance and presented the themes thorough the research question formulated

367 in the study. Doing thematic analysis helps the researcher to come up with

368 different themes on the given texts that are subjected to research. It is useless to

369 read a text or observe it if someone is not able to decode all the themes that are

370 present in it (Orwell, 2019).

371 Then, the researcher reviewed the themes and the first set of data that he

372 received. Reviewing the themes aims to make sure that none of the data has left

373 from analyzing during these steps and to decide about the final themes for

374 analysis. Lastly, the researcher made the table that shows the data, which are

375 classified and grouped to create emergent themes.

376 The Thematic Analysis of the Views of BSED-Mathematics Students on the

377 Impact of E-Learning to their Academic Performance

378 Table 1 presents the thematic analysis on the impact of e-learning on the

379 academic performance of BSED-Mathematics students. The analysis is

380 presented according to the theme they belong. The table shows the textual data,

381 cluster themes and the emergent themes drawn from the responses of the

382 participants.

387

388 The participants revealed that self-dependence, self-discipline and

389 responsibility, more time to study and do school works, and utilization of

390 technology are the positive impacts that they have experienced in e-learning.

391 This is supported by the study of Ahmad (2018) that e-learning provides time

392 flexibility to the students and it motivates students to do their own works without

393 other’s helped. It was also that students feel comfortable when they use internet.

394 His study concluded that e-learning is a system that provides time flexibility to the

395 students for their learning and motivates students to do their work without others

396 help. It is also concluded that students feel comfortable in browsing and surfing

397 the internet. On the other hand, participants also revealed that they experienced

398 poor internet connection, inconsiderate and unapproachable teachers, and

399 distractions that have negative impacts to student’s academic performance.

400 These were reflected in the different statements of the participants:

22
21

401 “It affects my motivation positively, because I need to work

402 hard to understand even more the lesson. I don't need to be
403 dependent to the other people because it's too hard since we
404 are in a new normal. It affects my motivation also to finish
405 my work immediately to avoid cramming.” (P1)(54, 55, 56,
406 57)
407 “it has a huge impact, do you know that my grades were
408 even higher when I was not online than now, no matter how
409 big my grades are, I don't know, maybe because sometimes
410 I was late in passing the answers because like what I said
411 that the internet connection we have is not enough
412 sometimes very weak sometimes average, but usually is
413 really like that, it has a big effect when it comes to marks.”
414 (P1)(106,107,108, 109, 110)
427 naming. No more second chances. Then meron din iba,
428 hindi kami makaask bakit ganun grades naming kasi hindi
429 niya man ipakita ano result ng mga quizzes or exams
430 naming, hindi din siya approachable.” (P4)(176, 177, 178,
431 179)
432 “So far, e-learning has given me grades that are higher than
433 my grades in the previous semester. I think this is because I
434 have plenty of time to study and do school works and you
435 can open quizzes and activities any time before the
436 deadline.” (P5)(357, 358, 359)
437 “Well, para sa akoa, I perform better in e-learning. Ang
438 paggamit sa mga technological softwares sa paghimo ug
439 assignments and presentations kay convenient and I am
440 able to utilize technology sa akong learning.” (P6)(353, 354,
441 355)
23
22

442 “I have been more focus, self- discipline and responsible for
443 my own learning so I was able to get an good grades that
444 every students wanted” (P7)(532, 533, 534)
445 “Sometime I spend most of time in browsing Facebook
446 where I forgot to focus studying and making my assignments
447 and it leads to negative performance.”(P8)(669, 670)
448

449 The table 1 presents the views of the participants to impact of e-learning

450 to their academic performance and further analyzed through cross-case analysis

451 as follows:

452 Cross-Case Analysis

453 A. Positive Impact of E-Learning to Student’s Academic Performance

454 Self-direction, Self-discipline and Responsibility

455 One emergent theme arises is self-dependence, self-discipline and

456 responsibility. Participants say that they are responsible for their own learning

457 especially in e-learning. As participants 1,2,3,5 and 6 quote:

458 “It affects my motivation positively, because I need to work

459 hard to understand even more the lesson. I don't need to be
460 dependent to the other people because it's to hard since we
461 are in a new normal. It affects my motivation also to finish
462 my work immediately to avoid cramming.(P1)(54-57)
463
464 “I learn to study and find many solutions to how to do it, I
465 learned to teach myself not to rely on what the teacher just
466 says”(P2)(136-138)
467
472 at the same time kabalo ka kanus ang deadline so possibly
24
23

474 time.
476 (228-233)
477
478 “To cope with the changes, I disciplined myself. I forced
479 myself to be more responsible, like I do my assignments and
480 activities ahead of time so that I will not have a late
481 submission. I also made an adjustment with my study area. I
482 transferred to an area where internet connection is much
483 stronger. I also practiced proper time management so that I
484 can balance house works with school works. E-learning
485 teaches me how to do self-study because the online
486 discussions are only limited. Because of these, I was able to
487 train my mathematical skills and I was able to discover
488 different techniques of solving equations and problem. I can
489 say that my knowledge and skills in Mathematics have
490 improved because of the challenge of not having enough
491 time for discussions and explanation of topics during online
492 classes”(P5)(242-246,382-386)
493
494 “As a student, ang changes nga dala sa pandemic is very
495 challenging. To cope up with it, gina try nako akong best nga
496 mag self-learning. Actually I am a person nga fond sa
497 pagpaminaw sa ideas sa uban so that I can collect ideas.
498 Karun lisod makipag communicate with my classmates kay
499 tungod sa sitwasyon ug sa hina nga internet. So akong
500 ginabuhat is mag surf online to know about something.
501 Regarding naman sa change of learning environment, is sa
502 akong gibuhat to cope up with the change is ang pag set ug
503 learning space nako, so that ma set akong mind everytime I
504 am studying.”(P6)(427-423)
505
506 “I have been more focus, self- discipline and responsible for
507 my own learning so I was able to get an good grades that
508 every students wanted” (P7)(532, 533, 534)
509
510 It has been found that students who take responsibility for their own learning

511 and demonstrate the narrow personality trait known as self-directed learning

512 seem to have greater academic achievement to find success in the online

513 environment (Dabbagh, 2007; Lounsbury et al., 2009; Roblyer, 2005; Carson,

514 2012). The adolescent personality has generally not yet settled, and some
25
24

515 students are farther along the road to maturity as self-directed learners than

516 others (Arnett, 1999; Carson, 2012). Those students who are highly self-

517 dependent, self-disciplined and responsible should have the opportunity to test

518 their wings in a less-structured learning environment where they can choose the

519 place, time and rate at which they learn. Online learning offers that option

520 (Cavanaugh, Barbour, & Clark, 2009; Carson, 2012). Students who are not as

521 highly self-dependent, self-disciplined and responsible may benefit from

522 placement in an environment where an adult mentor is available to help them to

523 build sense of self-efficacy, learn to set and evaluate learning goals, and to take

524 greater responsibility for their own learning (Carson,2012).

525 Convenience and Flexibility

526 Another emergent theme arises from the response of the participants is

527 convenience and flexibility. Participant says that they have more time to study

528 and do schoolwork and they can answer school work and join virtual class

529 anywhere. As participants 1,3,5,6 and 7 quote:

530 “I can perform better in e learning because the teachers give

531 us more time to study our lesson because they consider that
532 we are in a new normal where we are still adjusting
533 everything.”(P1)(30-32)
534 “Sa karon mas dako man jud akoang oras sa pag online...
535 Makaana ko nga maayo man akoang academic performace
536 since na use to naman nako ning ig ani nga pamaagi og mas
537 nakatabang man pud ni aron mabuhat nako akoang
538 buluhaton sa pagskwela... Og in some point mas nakalimtan
539 nako ang pressure, ang stress and other negativities nga
540 pwede makadisturbo sa akoang pag skwela”(P3)(247-251)
541 “So far, e-learning has given me grades that are higher than
542 my grades in the previous semester. I think this is because I
26
25

543 have plenty of time to study and do school works and you
544 can open quizzes and activities any time before the
545 deadline.”(P5)(357-359)
546 “The means by which discussion can now be recorded and
547 posted online, pwede mag review ang learner to fully
548 understand the topic. In this way, maka learn ug maau ang
549 learner.”(P6)(499-501)
550 “I am in favor with it, because I just can bring with me my
551 classes in wherever places I go but more of that there were
552 also a part of me that missed the actual/physical bond I
553 share with my friends at school.”(P7)(528-530)
554 Online learning provides convenience to the learners since they can join

555 their class and do their school works anytime and anywhere. Flexible online

556 learning, on the other hand, allows for a much more effective professional

557 development experience. Learners work through online material at their own

558 pace because it gives them plenty of time to digest, engage with each other,

559 practice, or do their own research (Rethinking Online Education, 2017).

560 Utilization of technology

561 Utilization of technology is one of the emergent themes that rise from the

562 response of the participants. Participants revealed that the use technological

563 software, and gadgets help them perform better in e-learning. As participant 1, 2,

564 5, and 6 quote:

565 “Because of access to gadgets I can possibly say I can

566 perform well and even have the courage to do my school
567 works very well. I can cope up with the lesson and can even
568 raise my question in the specific time. Also the fact that I
569 wouldn't lost of tract in solving hard mathematic problems.”
570 (P1)(43, 44, 45, 46)
571 “I think performance in online classes is better if you have
572 complete gadgets such as smartphones and laptops,
27
26

573 because when it comes to activities, you can do them sooner

574 because you can open your schoology anytime. and if we
575 have a laptop, we will see that the teacher's presentation is
576 bigger than a cellphone that is very small and your eyes
577 have almost grown from staring at your cellphone.” (P2)
578 (129,130,131,132,133)
579 “If I don't have such gadgets, then it will be hard for me to do
580 and pass my activities. If I don't have one of those, then I
581 couldn't really perform well in my online classes. It is really
582 important to have a complete set of gadgets as it is one of
583 the key factors that could affect a student's success in online
584 classes.”(P5)(376,377,378,379)
585 “Well, para sa akoa, I perform better in e-learning. Ang
586 paggamit sa mga technological softwares sa paghimo ug
587 assignments and presentations kay convenient and I am
588 able to utilize technology sa akong learning.” (P6)(353, 354,
589 355)
590

591 Technology enhances student learning. According to Host (2019),

592 technology improves student-learning outcomes: Evidence suggests that

593 educational technologies can improve student achievement, so long as such

594 tools are integrated thoughtfully into teaching and learning. Digital devices, apps

595 and tools to increase engagement, encourage collaboration, spark innovation

596 and enhance student learning (Himmelsbach, 2019).

597 Access to online resources

598 Access to online resources is one of the themes that arise from the

599 response of the participants. According to them, many online resources are

600 available online to supplement the lesson and improve mathematical skills. As

601 participants 1, 2, 6 and 8 quote:

28
27

602 “Everything we want to search can give it to us

603 immediately.”(P1)(16-17)
604 “More information to supplement what I learned about the
605 topic” (P2)(138-139)
606 “E-learning helps me improve my skills and knowledge in
607 mathematics through the proximity I have with search
608 engines and sources of information. Duol na lang kaau ko sa
609 opportunity to search for some mathematical ideas and know
610 more about it. In the face-to-face setting where we are at
611 classrooms, ang sources of information is limited labi nag
613 gina discuss. While in online class, I am already online
614 during class so I can search something on the internet
615 whenever I want.”(P6)(476-482)
616 “Through YouTube I can fill in those l didn’t understand but
617 for me its not enough.”(P8)(639)
618

619 Students can have access to resources and materials that may be

620 physically located anywhere in the world. An instructor can compile a resource

621 section online with links to scholarly articles, institutions, and other materials

622 relevant to the course topic for students to access for research, extension, or in-

623 depth analysis of course content material (University of Illinois Springfield, 2021).

624 Furthermore, online educational resources are easily accessible by all with an

625 internet connection, whether they’re using a laptop, iPad, or smartphone, and

626 many of these resources are available free of charge. This makes better

627 education more affordable and available to more students, no matter their

628 financial background (Myers, 2020).

629 B. Negative Impact of E-Learning to Students Academic Performance

630 Poor Internet Connection

29
28

631 Participants revealed that their academic performance in e-learning was

632 affected because of unstable internet connection that results to difficulties in

633 entering virtual conference and having a hard time to submit their assignments

634 and quizzes because of software errors. As participants 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8

635 quote:

636 “I can't cope up easily because of the internet barriers, with

637 that I can't understand all the lesson and can't even raise a
638 question in the specific time of the lesson. Sometimes I
639 experience getting out of the online class for I don't have a
640 stable connection. As I out of that lesson I already lost
641 interest for the reason that I'm already behind and I don't
642 know what's going on that time. If only I have all the access
643 and gadgets I can possibly say I can perform well and even
644 have the courage to do my school works very well. I can
645 cope up with the lesson and can even raise my question in
646 the specific time. Also the fact that I wouldn't lost of tract in
647 solving hard mathematic problems.” (P1)(6-8, 38-40, 43-46)
648 “My grades were even higher when I was not online than
649 now, no matter how big my grades are, I don't know, maybe
650 because sometimes I was late in passing the answers
651 because like what I said that the internet connection we have
652 is not enough sometimes very weak sometimes average but
653 usually is really like that, it has a big effect when it comes to
654 marks. The internet connection affects the way the lessons
655 are understood during our online discussion. I think
656 performance in online classes is better if you have complete
657 gadgets such as smartphones and laptops, because when it
658 comes to activities, you can do them sooner because you
659 can open your schoology anytime. and if we have a laptop,
660 we will see that the teacher's presentation is bigger than a
661 cellphone that is very small and your eyes have almost
662 grown from staring at your cellphone.” (P2)(106-110,121-
663 126,129-133)

680 connection.” (P3)(191-199,208-214)
681 “There are tendencies when the internet is low and students
682 who want to learn, cannot learn. Unfortunately, that happens
683 a lot and it affects the student's knowledge.” (P4)(289-294)
684 “I cannot perform well in class because I have a weak
685 internet connection. Internet connection is the most crucial
686 factor during online discussion. E-learning is sometimes very
687 discouraging because of the unstable internet connection If
688 the internet connection is strong, then lessons will be easier
689 to understand and if the internet connection is weak, then
690 the student will not be able to catch up with the discussion.
691 So strong internet connection is really the key for effective
692 learning in online classes. If I don't have such gadgets, then
693 it will be hard for me to do and pass my activities. If I don't
694 have one of those, then I couldn't really perform well in my
695 online classes.” (P5)(334-339,370-373,389-392)
696 “Internet connection is really a big factor on how I
697 understand the lessons during online discussion. Paghinay
So sa kawad an ug information nga
701 madunggan, gamay ra akong masabtan, or worst wala gyud
702 koy nasabtan. Also, in the time of recitation, mag matter
If I
704 have complete gadgets, then I would have convenient
705 means to finish reports and requirements. Thus, I can
706 perform better.” (P6)(459-464,467-473)
707 “Low internet connection and glitches worries my soul, low
708 internet connection will cause absence to discussions.” (P7)
709 (536-537,540-541)
710 “Internet connection is a big factor us for to be able to
711 understand the lessons during virtual discussion. If the
712 connection is weak, all the lessons will be triggered too. It
31
30

713 because we aren’t able to understand the lesson if the part

714 of the discussion is missing of learning to the weak
715 connection. Its not the subject nor the instructors is the
716 enemy, it’s the connection that made us difficult to learn.”
717 (P8)(624-628)
718 An unstable mobile or internet connection is seen as the top challenge that

719 may affect a child's learning process through distance education, based on a

720 survey by the Department of Education (DepEd, 2020).Some 6.9 million parents

721 and guardians that answered the DepEd's Learner Enrollment and Survey Form

722 shared the sentiment on unstable mobile or internet connection. The second

723 leading challenge in distance education was lack of available gadgets or

724 equipment, which was picked by 6.8 million respondents, followed by insufficient

725 load or data allowance, chosen by 6.2 million parents and guardians (ABS-CBN

726 News, 2020).

727 Moreover, lack of reliable internet connection, access to smart devices, and

728 the absence of a proper learning environment could all lead to student’s

729 struggling to cope with remote learning (Roesch, 2020).

730 Distractions

731 Another emergent theme that comes out from the response of the

732 participants is distraction. Participants say that unable to focus because of many

733 distractions like electronic devices and social media. As participants 1, 4, 5, 6, 7

734 and 8 quote:

735 “We are using e-learning through our cellphones and laptops
736 we are expose in temptation with the other applications that
737 hinder our knowledge and leanings.” (P1)(60-62)
32
31

741 social platforms or mga e-games(P4)(306-308)
742 “Since I am just studying from home, I also encountered
743 many distractions like temptation to play e-games and social
744 media” (P5)(338-339)
I am usually
748 online but not studying or surfing about the lesson. I may be
749 online but it does not mean I am studying. And usually I am
750 studying offline. I like to study when no pop up info disturb
751 me. So I like to have books where I can study my lesson.”
752 (P6)(422-424,505-508)
753 “Whenever I go online, there's part of me that plurge to
754 surfing facebook and other social medias cites”(P7)(554-
755 558)
756 “The noisy, messy, and many destructions in my learning
757 environment that triggers me also. As what I have said, due
758 to those hindrances I don’t focus on learning but to submit
759 what is needed to comply.Sometime I spend most of time in
760 browsing Facebook where I forgot to focus studying and
761 making my assignments and it leads to negative
762 performance” (P8)(655-658,668-669)
763 E-learning can also be challenging and can incite distractions.

764 Top distractions for students include social media, e-games, texting, television,

765 and family, which can pull one's attention away from the task at hand and

766 diminish productivity (Decandia,2020). Moreover, digitally-distracted

767 students may cut study sessions short and neglect assignments. They take

768 longer to complete tasks because their focus is fragmented. When personal

769 gadgets are present in the classroom, students score half a letter grade lower

770 than the usual (Abel, 2020).

771 Teacher’s attitude

33
32

772 Participants revealed that some of the teachers are inconsiderate,

773 unapproachable and insensitive in online class. As participants 1, 3, 4 and 7

774 quote:

775 “I can perform better in e learning because the teachers

776 give us more time to study our lesson because they consider
777 that we are in a new normal where we are still adjusting
778 everything. It improve by how the teachers make an effort for
779 us. As we experiencing new normal they are also adjusting
780 themselves to teach us and understand our lesson in the
781 given time. There's also time that a teacher will give a bunch
782 of assignments and to be pass immediately tomorrow, so we
783 sacrifice our time to do it immediately.”(P1)(30-32,49-51,74-
784 76)
785 “Teacher asks you to do a lot then you need to do research
786 because you no longer understand the discussion given, it
787 seems like start learning about the topic again, then once
788 again Sunday it seems like there is still work because you
789 need to go online because something needs to be done.
790 almost all of my time are already spend online.” (P2)(160-
791 164)
Mas i promote unta nila ang
794 equity than equality kay dli tanan: Signal parehas kusog,
795 Kompleto og gamit, Daghag kwarta og Gisayunan sa in ani
796 nga sistema.”(P3)(255-258)
797 “Nagbaba siya kuya haha. Meron kasi akong naging teacher
799 naming. No more second chances. Then meron din iba,
800 hindi kami makaask bakit ganun grades naming kasi hindi
801 niya man ipakita ano result ng mga quizzes or exams
802 naming, hindi din siya approachable. Wala akong natutunan
803 ngayon na school year.. kasi now na online class nagabigay
806 (276-279,282-286)
807 “Some of the teachers assumption is that we are always
808 available so they create more assignments and to do's
809 without knowing that they get most of our time and we have
810 been academically drained. I just hope that teachers will get
811 more sensitive about the students availabilities at times, and
34
33

812 lay-out platforms about students who wanna cope-up

813 especially during recitations that they weren't able to attend
814 to. Since, e-learning sometimes is exhausting and
815 connections are time draining.”(P7)(571-573,577-580)
816 Negative attitudes displayed in the school by teachers may result in

817 negative performance while positive attitudes put forth by teachers in the school

818 may result into a positive performance. The attitude of a teacher, consciously or

819 unconsciously, directly or indirectly affects students' academic performance

820 (Olubukola,2018).

821 Cheating

822 Participants revealed that cheating in e-learning has an impact to their

823 academic performance. It is because instructors cannot monitor if they stay on

824 the task, answers of the test and quizzes are available online, and instructors

825 cannot recognize if their students are cheating or opening their notes during

826 assessment. As participant 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 quote:

827 “I can say it can help my grades especially in making an

828 easy where I can search immediately, and in oral recitation
829 where we can search our answers in Google without being
830 caught.”(P1)(21-27)
831 “Do not answer the exam or quiz done by the teachers
832 themselves and not listening to the teacher during class
833 because he is already in the class, off the cam, then asleep.
834 In e-learning I rely on the notes I have as the exam is
835 coming up, so I don't need to study everything because I can
836 open the books, notes I have during exams and exams and
837 yet I join the class without being prepared.”(P2)(98-102,113-
838 118)

849 kaming natutunan, yun yung problem.” (P4)(297-300)
850 “Cheating is also rampant and is very easy to do in online
851 classes. I still believe that genuine learning can only be
852 achieved in face to face classes.”(P5)(353-355)
854 na I can search for a certain information kay d man ko
855 makita sa akong teacher. Kanang ana gud na mindset. Ana
857 (P6)(487-489)
858 “Honestly, during e- learning there lots of crimes involved in
859 between the screen. High grades form subjects where there
860 are cheating occurs because of laziness or being hard to
861 focus on the discussions due to a lot of hindrances.”(P8)
862 (612-614)
863 Cheating has been considered a serious problem among college campuses

864 for over 100 years (Anderson, 1998; Watson, 2010), and today, with the advance

865 of word processors and the internet, cheating has entered the digital age.

866 Students today are now part of the copy and paste generation in which dishonest

867 behavior is only a mouse click away.

868 Moreover, in the study of Watson (2010) entitled "Cheating in the Digital

869 Age: Do Students Cheat More in Online Courses?", he found out that 32.1% of

870 the students admitted to having cheated in a live class and 32.7% admitted to

871 cheating in an on-line class at some point in their higher education coursework.

872 Though slightly more students admitted to cheating in on-line courses related to

873 the overall statements, for almost every individual survey statement, more
36
35

874 students admitted to inappropriate behavior in face-to-face classes than in on-

875 line courses. The only behaviors in which students had a higher rate of

876 dishonesty in on-line courses was in obtaining answers from someone during a

877 test or quiz (23.3% to 18.1%) and in using instant messaging during a test or quiz

878 (4.2% to 3.0%). Interestingly, students reported they were more than twice as

879 likely to have been caught cheating in a live class (4.9% to 2.1%).

880 Furthermore, trends toward an increase in online courses suggest the need

881 for more research on differing levels of cheating and other acts of academic dis-

882 integrity as compared to face-to-face classes. According to the study of Miller

883 and Young-Jones (2019) entitled "Academic Integrity: Online Classes Compared

884 to Face-to-Face Classes" after they surveyed 639 students in both types of

885 classes, they found out that students felt it was easier to cheat in online classes

886 than face-to-face classes. The overall consensus in their study agreed that

887 cheating is easier in online classes (57.2%). Specifically, the findings indicate

888 that students taking both online and face-to-face classes found that cheating

889 occurred more frequently in online classes

890 C. Other Impact of E-Learning to Students Academic Performance

891 Instructional Materials

892 Participants also said that instructional materials have an impact on their

893 performance in e-learning. They revealed that good instructional materials help

894 them easily understand the lesson especially during online class. As participants

895 1,2,3,6, and 7 quote:

37
36

896 “Depend on the teacher how they give us the materials we

897 need to use. Others are pictures from books which give us a
898 hard time to understand for there are circumstances that its
899 blurry and even can't open it. Some teachers give us a good
900 materials like PowerPoint where we can understand it
901 immediately. Some videos that are given are hard to
902 understand, some are good.”(P1)(65-69).
903 “I have more difficulty with the teaching materials used today
904 especially if the connection is really weak then you cannot
905 open the files provided”(P2)(153-152).
906 “Depende sa teacher na nagbuhat... Usahay hawod og dali
907 masabtan...usahay pud dli but it doesn't mean na
909 if mahawod man o dili ang ginaprovide sa online class...
912 pagskwela”(P3)(241-244)
913 “The materials used during the online classes are easy to
914 understand and it made me perform better academically
915 during online classes. It is because the given and used
916 materials contains complete informations about the topics
917 and its contents are easy to understand.”(P5)(399-402)
918 “I think the lessons and materials used during online class is
919 good and easy to understand.”(P6)(498-499)
920 “Yes, as I am a digital native it was easy for me to learn and
921 apply those given instructions”(P7)(565-566)
922

923 Instructional materials serve as a channel between the teacher and the

924 students in delivering instructions. They may also serve as motivation on the

925 teaching-learning process. It is used to get the attention of the students and

926 eliminate boredom. The study of Adalikwu (2013) revealed that students taught

927 with instructional materials performed significantly better than those taught

928 without instructional materials and also that the use of instructional

38
37

929 materials generally improved students' understanding of concepts and led to

930 high academic achievements .

931 Student-Teacher Interaction

932 Participants revealed that student-teacher interaction has an impact in their

933 academic performance in e-learning because lack of instant feedback from the

934 teacher and lack of interaction with teacher will negatively affect the their

935 performance in e-learning. As participant 1,4,5,6 quote:

936 “Student need also the interaction of the teacher were I can
937 say that I'm still not in favor of the e-learning. Not all subjects
938 are easy to access in this e learnings specially in solving
939 mathematics that really needs a face to face interaction
940 because of the process that needs a focus, but then it's e
941 learning I can't cope up all the process which affects my
942 grades negatively”(P1)(17-18,21-24)
951 is for oral recitation lang.”(P4)(282-286,318-320)
952 “E-learning has many limitations like limited interaction
953 between students and the teacher. There is also no actual
954 demonstration of things that should be demonstrated
955 actually student's performance are only limited in e-learning
956 and I observed that I only learn concepts and theories
957 without performing or doing their applications.” (P5)(351-
958 353,365-367)
959 “ Dati focused kaau ko to learn the lesson kay gina discuss
960 man with the teacher infront, I think too much of its utilization
961 can minimize students sense of social value, in terms of
962 interaction, social cues, and intimacy/relationship. In this
963 time of modern world, dapat naay face-to-face interaction
39
38

964 gihapon ang learners with their teachers and peers, kay
965 makatabang man ni nga ma enjoy nila ang learning
966 experience. And ang face-to-face learning is dapat ma
967 reinforce sa online class. In general, I believe that it is more
968 effective to learn if both f2f and online class are present in
969 the learning experience.”(P6)(421-422,437-443)
970 A lack of any kind of face-to-face communication with the instructor inhibits

971 student feedback, causes social isolation, and causes students to feel a lack of

972 pressure. A lack of pressure is a disadvantage because it causes students to

973 abandon their studies more easily. Constant nudging by professors may be

974 undesirable for many, but it’s an effective method for improving student’s

975 retention (Tamm, 2019).

976 Learning Retention

977 All of the participants responded that they don’t remember the lesson from

978 their online class and some responded that they can only remember a very little

979 portion of what is taught to them. It is because of poor internet connection,

980 distractions, effort and intention and under learning of the topic. As participants 1,

981 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 quote:

982 “I can’t remember it at all” (P1)(62)

983 “I think I remember very little and also very little learned and
984 knowledge learned in the online class I do not know why
985 such a situation seems difficult, as if nothing, I have not
986 learned in this way of teaching I prefer really face to face
987 class.” (P2)(148-150)
988 “Sorry to tell pero dli jud.. But it doesn't mean na wala koy
989 nabal an og useless akoang pag-attend sa online class... Ga

997 learning na nakuha ngayong school year
998 WAHAHAHHAAHA”(P4)(311-315)
999 “I think I will remember some but not all. I believe that online
1000 classes are less effective than actual classes in inculcating
1001 knowledge to a student's mind.”(P5)(395-396)
1002 “Nope, I don't think so. Dili man gud strong ang foundation
1005 connection. Instead na maka-reflect ko sa lesson in order for
1006 me to learn it nga dili malimtan, dili na hinoon kay ang
1007 discussion is putol putol or dili masabtan.”(P6)(392-395)
1008 “Nope, I am no genius but I can remember some knowledge
1009 that impacted me. If it does not, then its a no-no, I'm just
1010 being honest anyways.”(P7)(561-562)
1011 “Honestly most of it I couldn’t remember since internet
1012 connection is weak that brings the virtual discussion not be
1013 good at delivering the lessons.” (P8)(654-655)
1014

1015 Online courses have 10% to 20% higher failed retention rate than traditional

1016 classroom environments (Herbert, 2006). Review of existing literature indicates

1017 that online courses have several social, technological, and motivational issues

1018 existing from both the learners' and the faculty's perspective (Bawa, 2016).

1019

1020 DISCUSSION

1021 This chapter presents the findings, comparison with the existing studies,

1022 limitation of the research, implication for the future study and the over-all
41
40

1023 significance of the study. Moreover, this study sought to understand the views of

1024 participants on the impact of e-learning to their academic performance.

1025 The study sought to determine the impact of e-learning on academic

1026 performance of BSED-Mathematics students who are enrolled in the school year

1027 2020-2021 at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. Therefore, this study

1028 gathered the necessary information from the participants during the in-depth

1029 interview. Moreover, the result of the study would help the administration and the

1030 teachers to assess the impact of e-learning to the academic performance of the

1031 students and use such data to improve the quality of education that the students

1032 receive.

1033 Major Findings

1034 The case study describes the experiences of BSED-Mathematics students

1035 of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges on the impact of e-learning to their

1036 academic performance. After the in-depth analysis, the following findings were

1037 drawn:

1038 It was revealed that there are positive and negative impacts of e-learning to

1039 the academic performance of the participants. The participants revealed that self-

1040 dependence, self-discipline and responsibility, more time to study and do school

1041 works, utilization of technology and access to online resources are the positive

1042 impacts that they have experienced in e-learning. On the other hand, participants

1043 also revealed that they experienced poor internet connection, inconsiderate and
42
41

1044 unapproachable teachers, and distractions that have negative impacts to their

1045 academic performance.

1046 Moreover, students become more responsible for their own learning

1047 especially in e-learning and they are doing their best to discipline their selves to

1048 focus and don’t depend on their classmates to understand their lesson and to do

1049 their school works. Students have also more time to study and do their

1050 schoolwork because online class is very flexible and convenient for them

1051 because they can answer their school work and join virtual class anytime and

1052 anywhere.

1053 In addition, students perform better in e-learning with the use technological

1054 software and gadgets since it helps them in creating assignments, projects and

1055 other tasks that their teacher gave to them. Furthermore, students also perform

1056 better in online class since they have more access to online resources.

1057 Having access to the online resources allows students to keep up with

1058 information that might not make it into textbooks, or that might become outdated

1059 by the time it is published in a traditional format. Also, it empowers students to

1060 take charge of their education since there are lots of online resources that can

1061 supplement the knowledge that they don’t understand.

1062 On the other hand, student’s performance is negatively affected due to

1063 unstable internet connection that results to loss of focus and motivation, and

1064 stress to the students. Students cannot focus because of many distractions like

1065 social media. Moreover, teachers that are inconsiderate, unapproachable and
43
42

1066 insensitive in online class also affect negatively the academic performance of the

1067 students. Also, cheating in e-learning has become more rampant because

1068 instructors cannot monitor if they stay on the task, answers of the test and

1069 quizzes are available online, and instructors cannot recognize if their students

1070 are cheating or opening their notes during assessment.

1071 Meanwhile, good instructional materials helps the students easily

1072 understand the lesson especially during online class. However, lack of instant

1073 feedback from the teacher and lack of interaction with teacher will negatively

1074 affect the performance of the students in e-learning.

1075 Lastly, all participants responded that they don’t remember the lesson from

1076 their online class and some responded that they can only remember a very little

1077 portion of what is taught to them. It is because of poor internet connection,

1078 distractions, effort and intention and under learning of the topic.

1079 Comparison of Findings with Existing Studies

1080 According to the study of Ahmad (2018), e-learning provides time flexibility

1081 to the students and it motivates students to do their own works without other’s

1082 help. The study concluded that e-learning is a system that provides time flexibility

1083 to the students for their learning and motivates them to do their work without

1084 other’s help. It is also concluded that students feel comfortable in browsing and

1085 surfing internet.

1086 According to Segaren (2020), e-learning has lots of benefits like flexibility,

1087 global knowledge, accessibility, students control and study time, better
44
43

1088 opportunity and cost effective. Online learning allows students to attend classes

1089 and courses anywhere with a computer and access to the internet while online

1090 course materials can be accessed 24 hours every day. Students are exposed to

1091 knowledge shared by the instructors around the globe which cannot be learned in

1092 books. By studying online, students can choose their own learning environment

1093 that works best for their needs. Students may not have to sit for a long period of

1094 time. They can pause the lesson when needed and read notes at their own will.

1095 Online learning also offers lots of savings because there is no additional cost for

1096 transportation and accommodation. Students are given opportunity to choose

1097 from various schools and courses.

1098 Besides, according to Norman (2016),online learning offers a self-paced

1099 system that enables them to make progress with rhythm that suits them. This

1100 type of system does not require attending live sessions; student can access the

1101 materials at any time that works for them. If they have to work or take care of

1102 their home and children during the day, they can study at night. That’s an

1103 advantage that the traditional educational system cannot beat. Online learning

1104 will not only give them knowledge from the lessons from their course but will also

1105 teach them self-discipline and responsibility (Heap, 2017).

1106 E-learning is the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to

1107 enhance and facilitate teaching and learning. Oye et. al (2015), verified his study

1108 that the actual e-learning use has significant effect on students’ academic

1109 performance. E-learning use is associated with increased students’ academic

45
44

1110 performance. For those who do have access to the right technology, there is

1111 evidence that learning online can be more effective in a number of ways ( Li &

1112 Lalani,2020).

1113 However, Suleiman (2019) found that distance between tutor and learner in

1114 an online instrumental music program has negative effects on performance

1115 quality, student engagement, and development and refinement of skills and

1116 knowledge.

1117 Unfortunately, one of the biggest disadvantages of E-Learning continues to

1118 be cheating through various methods. Compared to on-campus students, online

1119 students can cheat on assessments more easily as they take assessments in

1120 their own environment and while using their personal computer. The students

1121 cannot be directly observed during assessments without a video feed, making

1122 cheating detection during online assessments more complicated than traditional

1123 testing procedures. Additionally, without a proper identity verification system in

1124 place, students taking online assessments might be able to let a third party take

1125 the assessment instead of themselves, resulting in a wholly fraudulent test result

1126 (Tamm, 2019).

1127 Lastly, when deconstructed, e-learning means “electronic learning“. So, an

1128 internet is needed to undertake an online course or classes (Keegan, 2020).

1129 According to a study released by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies

1130 (2017), for Filipinos, poor internet connection is more bothersome issue than

1131 poverty and corruption in the Philippines. Therefore, this will be a problem that
46
45

1132 the government should fix to improve the quality of education that every Filipino

1133 students will receive especially in e-learning.

1134 Limitation

1135 The study focused on the experiences of BSED-Mathematics students in

1136 Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. Specifically, there are eight (8) BSED-

1137 Mathematics students that have been selected randomly from 2 nd year and 3rd

1138 year, two (2) male and two (2) female participants from 2 nd year while two (2)

1139 female and two (2) male participants in 3 rd year. All the participants are BSED-

1140 Mathematics students. As Creswell (2015) stated, in conducting qualitative

1141 research, only a few individuals would be studied. It is because the researcher

1142 provided an in-depth picture of a specific phenomenon. Moreover, he explained

1143 that collecting and analyzing data take considerable time, and the addition of

1144 each lengthens the time.

1145 Thus, the study cannot give the general picture of the impact of e-learning to

1146 the academic performance of the students because it was only limited to the

1147 responses which have been gathered from the eight (8) BSED-Mathematics

1148 students of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges.

1149 Implications for the Future Research

1150 The results of the research could not generate a generalization of the

1151 impact of e-learning to the academic performance of all the students at RMMC.

1152 Hence, a study of the same kind may be conducted to other majors and courses

1153 to validate its results.

47
46

1154 Moreover, further research may be done to re-interview some of the

1155 participants of the study to see whether the impact of e-learning to their

1156 academic performance changed over some time.

1157 Further researches may also be conducted from the perspective of the

1158 teachers and administrators to have diverse information in creating a broader

1159 view and to help the students improve the quality of education that they will

1160 experience through e-learning.

1161 Overall Significance of the Study

1162 The case study would be beneficial for everyone because it will form part in

1163 improving education. It would provide insights to better understand online

1164 education being provided to students. With the increasing popularity of online

1165 courses, it is necessary to evaluate the quality of education that the schools

1166 provide to the students. The result of this research would serve as reference for

1167 the school administrators to have access on the academic performance of the

1168 students in e-learning. This would provide an idea of conceptualizing a tool for

1169 school to address the possible problems that the students experience in e-

1170 learning like training teachers with the latest technology updates so that they can

1171 conduct their online classes seamlessly, and setting up an anti-cheating

1172 measures in order to protect the authenticity of online education.

1173 Moreover, this research would provide insights and would help the teachers

1174 formulate plans that are useful for their quest in addressing problems on e-

1175 learning to improve their student’s academic performance like keeping their
48
47

1176 online classes engaging, and interactive to help students stay focused on the

1177 lesson. Besides, this research would provide the students information about the

1178 possible effects of e-learning to their academic performance. Lastly, this study

1179 would provide the future researchers more ideas and avenues for further

1180 researches which can help them in their future investigation about e-learning

1181 issues and concerns.

1182 Concluding Remarks

1183 The study focused on the discussion on the different views of BSED-

1184 Mathematics students regarding the impact of e-learning on their academic

1185 performance based on their experiences and perceptions as well as the

1186 constructs which emerged from the information gleaned through in-depth

1187 interviews.

1188 From the results of the study, the researcher can say that there is a positive

1189 impact of e-learning in improving the grades of the students but it cannot be

1190 denied that e-learning has also much negative impacts to the academic

1191 performance of the students. Therefore, the school administrators, teachers and

1192 the parents should address and fix all the issues that students experienced in e-

1193 learning and look into their learning needs by providing them with support

1194 intended for them.

1652 INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION AMONG THE PARTICIPANTS

1653 Interview Transcription (Participant 1)

1654 Me: How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect your life as a student? Please tell us
1655 more about it.

1656 P1: It affects me in terms of understanding. At first, it’s too hard for me to adjust
1657 and understand things especially in every lesson. I can't cope up easily because
1658 of the internet barriers, with that I can't understand the entire lesson and can't
1659 even raise a question in the specific time of the lesson.

1660 Me: As a student, how do you cope with the changes that this pandemic has
1661 cause? Can you give me more details about it?

1662 P1: As a student, I can cope with my lesson by asking my classmates with the
1663 things I can't understand. I also search in different website that could help me
1664 even more to understand every lesson.

1665 Me: What is your opinion about the use of e-learning to deliver education to the
1666 students? Are you in favor of it, or not? Why? Please elaborate your answer.

1667 P1: My opinion about the e-learning are it is very useful and easy to access.
1668 Everything we want to search can give it to us immediately, but then a student
1669 need also the interaction of the teacher were I can say that I'm still not in favor of
1670 the e-learning. A lot of barriers that we can't handle as a student and even as a
1671 teacher possibly.

1672 Me: How do e-learning affect your grades? Why do you say so? Tell me more
1673 about it.

1674 P1: It affects my grade negatively and positively. In terms of negative, not all
1675 subjects are easy to access in this e learning especially in solving mathematics
1676 that really needs a face to face interaction because of the process that needs a
1677 focus, but then its e learning I can't cope up all the process which affects my
1678 grades negatively. In terms of positive, I can say it can help my grades especially
68
66

1679 in making an easy where I can search immediately and in oral recitation where
1680 we can search our answers in Google without being caught.

1681 Me: Do you think you perform better in e-learning? Why? Can you give me more
1682 details about it?

1683 P1: I can perform better in e learning because the teachers give us more time to
1684 study our lesson because they consider that we are in a new normal where we
1685 are still adjusting everything. E-learning is a useful tool where we can express
1686 our thoughts creatively for it can help us correct our grammars; give us more
1687 thoughts and even new ideas in a good period of time.

1688 Me: How does the internet connection affect the way how understand the lessons
1689 during your online discussion? Would you mind elaborating your response
1690 further?

1691 P1: It affects my understanding. Because I can easily cope up with all of it
1692 sometimes I can experience getting out of the online class for I don't have a
1693 stable connection. As I out of that lesson I already lost interest for the reason that
1694 I'm already behind and I don't know what's going on that time.

1695 Me: Do you think you will perform better in online class if you have complete
1696 gadgets like smartphones and laptops? Why? Can you give me more details
1697 about it?

1698 P1: Absolutely yes! Because of access to gadgets I can possibly say I can
1699 perform well and even have the courage to do my school works very well. I can
1700 cope up with the lesson and can even raise my question in the specific time. Also
1701 the fact that I wouldn't loss of tract in solving hard mathematic problems.

1702 Me: How does e-learning improve your skills and knowledge in mathematics?
1703 Can you tell me more about it?
1704 P1: it improves by how the teachers make an effort for us. As we experiencing
1705 new normal they are also adjusting themselves to teach us and understand our
1706 lesson in the given time.
69
67

1707 Me: How does e-learning affect your motivation in studying and answering all the
1708 school works and projects online? Tell me more about it.

1709 P1: it affects my motivation positively, because I need to work hard to understand
1710 even more the lesson. I don't need to be dependent to the other people because
1711 it's too hard since we are in a new normal. It affects my motivation also to finish
1712 my work immediately to avoid cramming.

1713 Me: Do you think that you remember all the learning and knowledge you have
1714 learned in your online class?

1715 P1: No, I can say no because we are using e-learning through our cellphones
1716 and laptops we are expose in temptation with the other applications that hinder
1717 our knowledge and learning. So with that, I can say I can't remember it all.

1718 Me: To your opinion, is the lessons and materials use during online class are
1719 easy to understand and makes you perform better academically? Why do you
1720 say so?

1721 P1: Maybe, because it will depend on the teacher how they give us the materials
1722 we need to use. Others are pictures from books which give us a hard time to
1723 understand for there are circumstances that it’s blurry and even can't open it.
1724 Some teachers give us good materials like PowerPoint where we can understand
1725 it immediately. Some videos that are given are hard to understand, some are
1726 good. So yes, it's maybe for me.

1727 Me: How does the number of hours you spend online and offline affect your
1728 academic performance? Why do you say so? Can you tell me more about it?

1729 P1: It affects my health which may consider affecting my academic performance
1730 also. As I spend too much time online and sleeping lately, it triggered my sinusitis
1731 that may affect my performance in every lesson. There's also time that a teacher
1732 will give a bunch of assignments and to be pass immediately tomorrow, so we
1733 sacrifice our time to do it immediately.
70
68

1734 Me: Are there things you want to share which were not talked from the things
1735 mentioned related to the impact of e-learning your academic performance? Could
1736 you share it then?

1737 P1: none

1738 Interview Transcription (Participant 2)

1739 Me: How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect your life as a student? Please tell us
1740 more about it.

1741 P2: As a student it is very difficult to deal with such a problem, it has a huge
1742 impact not only now but also in our future it is very difficult to learn the things that
1743 should be done in school, not being able to do the things you should do properly,
1744 it is very difficult to take a risk when you do not know when this kind of pandemic
1745 will end. It has a huge impact not only on our health but also on having enough
1746 knowledge that every single student and young person needs.

1747 Me: As a student, how do you cope with the changes that this pandemic has
1748 cause? Can you give me more details about it?

1749 P2: we are all confused and new to the new process because of this pandemic,
1750 but because of the help of my family and everyone who helped me, and maybe
1751 time management also to be able to adjust to this new normal class, and always
1752 really prayed to the lord, to have sufficient guidance from him and to be able to
1753 face it.

1754 Me: What is your opinion about the use of e-learning to deliver education to the
1755 students? Are you in favor of it, or not? Why? Please elaborate your answer.

1756 P2: e-learning is one of the biggest questions today, but for me it is not, because
1757 I have heard that it is different because of this e-learning almost all students
1758 today have learned very little because there is not enough internet connection to
1759 meet the needs of a student, there is not enough gadgets for all students,
1760 because the others are borrowing from neighbors or whoever, they do not
71
69

1761 answer the exam or quiz done by the teachers themselves and not listening to
1762 the teacher during class because he is already in the class, off the cam, then
1763 asleep.

1764 Me: How do e-learning affect your grades? Why do you say so? Tell me more
1765 about it.

1766 P2: it has a huge impact, do you know that my grades were even higher when I
1767 was not online than now, no matter how big my grades are, I don't know, maybe
1768 because sometimes I was late in passing the answers because like what I said
1769 that the internet connection we have is not enough sometimes very weak
1770 sometimes average. But usually is really like that, it has a big effect when it
1771 comes to marks.

1772 Me: Do you think you perform better in e-learning? Why? Can you give me more
1773 details about it?

1774 P2: I don't think I performed better in e-learning. Do you know why? because in
1775 e-learning I rely on the notes I have as the exam is coming up, so I don't need to
1776 study everything because I can open the books, notes I have during exams and
1777 exams and yet I join the class without being prepared for what will happen
1778 because you can ask a lot if necessary unlike before that you study your subjects
1779 almost every day so as not to be behind to your classmates.

1780 Me: How does the internet connection affect the way how understand the lessons
1781 during your online discussion? Would you mind elaborating your response
1782 further?

1783 P2: the internet connection affects the way the lessons are understood during our
1784 online discussion, whether in cooking it is the fire. If there is no fire in cooking no
1785 one can cook, just like online class if there is no internet no one has learned. In
1786 studying in this situation that we cannot face our teachers ourselves the internet
1787 replaced them because they are the ones we are looking for and asking what we
1788 need to learn. So without internet you can learn nothing.
72
70

1789 Me: Do you think you will perform better in online class if you have complete
1790 gadgets like smartphones and laptops? Why? Can you give me more details
1791 about it?

1792 P2: I think performance in online classes is better if you have complete gadgets
1793 such as smartphones and laptops, because when it comes to activities, you can
1794 do them sooner because you can open your schoology anytime. And if we have
1795 a laptop, we will see that the teacher's presentation is bigger than a cellphone
1796 that is very small and your eyes have almost grown from staring at your
1797 cellphone.

1798 Me: How does e-learning improve your skills and knowledge in mathematics?
1799 Can you tell me more about it?

1800 P2: in mathematics it has a huge impact on me, because I learn to study and find
1801 many solutions to how to do it, I learned to teach myself not to rely on what the
1802 teacher just says but to look for others myself more information to supplement
1803 what I learned about the topic.

1804 Me: How does e-learning affect your motivation in studying and answering all the
1805 school works and projects online? Tell me more about it.

1806 P2: e-learning affects my motivation to study and answer all the activities and
1807 projects in the online school because sometimes I rely on my classmates, I ask
1808 them for answers and sometimes when it comes to the project I am lazy to do
1809 because I hope someone will make everything look like that.

1810 Me: Do you think that you remember all the learning and knowledge you have
1811 learned in your online class?

1812 P2: I think I remember very little and also very little learned and knowledge
1813 learned in the online class I do not know why such a situation seems difficult, as
1814 if nothing, I have not learned in this way of teaching I prefer really face to face
1815 class.
73
71

1816 Me: To your opinion, is the lessons and materials use during online class are
1817 easy to understand and makes you perform better academically? Why do you
1818 say so?

1819 P2: No. I have more difficulty with the teaching materials used today especially if
1820 the connection is really weak then you cannot open the files provided because
1821 you do not have enough internet, and if you need to ask a question cannot be
1822 answered immediately because there is no adequate connection

1823 Me: How does the number of hours you spend online and offline affect your
1824 academic performance? Why do you say so? Can you tell me more about it?

1825 P2: if before, I had a lot of time to help with household chores now so much
1826 change is almost necessary to go online especially if the teacher asks you to do
1827 a lot then you need to do research because you no longer understand the
1828 discussion given, it seems like start learning about the topic again, then once
1829 again Sunday it seems like there is still work because you need to go online
1830 because something needs to be done. Almost all of my time is already spend
1831 online.

1832 Me: Are there things you want to share which were not talked from the things
1833 mentioned related to the impact of e-learning your academic performance? Could
1834 you share it then?

1835 P2: About the right conference schedule because it is difficult as a student if
1836 there is no proper schedule, some say 2 times a week, but sometimes no
1837 conference takes place and then others have a conference almost every day.

1838 Interview Transcription (Participant 3)

1839 Me: How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect your life as a student? Please tell
1840 us more about it.

1841 P3: First financially apektado kay ko..Second... Nagbaba ang akoang kompyansa
1842 if makaya ba nako ang bag o nga pamaagi sa pag eskwela since bawal man ang
74
72

1843 face to face tas bukid pajud amoa...last, naapektuhan pud akoang social life...kay
1844 lagi ginabawal ang mga panagtapok.

1845 Me: As a student, how do you cope with the changes that this pandemic has
1846 cause? Can you give me more details about it?

1847 P3: Kinahanglan dawaton ang sitwasyon... Dapat maging positibo lang...i adapt

1851 Me: What is your opinion about the use of e-learning to deliver education to the
1852 students? Are you in favor of it, or not? Why? Please elaborate your answer.

1858 og pagkakat on.

1859 Me: How do e-learning affect your grades? Why do you say so? Tell me more
1860 about it.

1867 time...
75
73

1870 Me: Do you think you perform better in e-learning? Why? Can you give me more
1871 details about it

1875 ginapaningkamutan gihapon nako nga makakat on sa in ana nga pamaagi

1876 Me: How does the internet connection affect the way how understand the lessons
1877 during your online discussion? Would you mind elaborating your response
1878 further?

1887 Me: Do you think you will perform better in online class if you have complete
1888 gadgets like smartphones and laptops? Why? Can you give me more details
1889 about it?

1894 Me: How does e-learning improve your skills and knowledge in mathematics?
1895 Can you tell me more about it.

1897 akoa kundili nakat on usab ako nga mag self learning og maresearch aron mas
76
74

1898 makakat on pa og mas daghan pa ang mahibal an nga mga pamaagi aron
1899 masabtan ang math.

1900 Me: How does e-learning affect your motivation in studying and answering all the
1901 school works and projects online? Tell me more about it.

1904 an kung unsa imong mga activities na buhaton, mga quizzes and etc..and at the
1905 same time kabalo ka kanus ang deadline so possibly dli jud ka kalimot sa mga
1906 buhatonon og makapasa jud ka on time. Mao nang usahay porsigido ko nga mo
1907 answer bahalag dli ko kasabot kay pwede raman i mag search.

1908 Me: Do you think that you remember all the learning and knowledge you have
1909 learned in your online class?

1910 P3: Sorry to tell pero dli jud.. But it doesn't mean na wala koy nabal an og
1911 useless akoang pag-attend sa online class... Ga take note pud ko og ga

1913 Me: To your opinion, is the lessons and materials use during online class are
1914 easy to understand and makes you perform better academically? Why do you
1915 say so?

1916 P3: Depende sa teacher na nagbuhat... Usahay hawod og dali

1917 masabtan...usahay pud dli but it doesn't mean na makaapekto ni sa akoang
1918 performace kay naa koy stand na if mahawod man o dili ang ginaprovide sa
1919 online class...

1921 Me: How does the number of hours you spend online and offline affect your
1922 academic performance? Why do you say so? Can you tell me more about it?

1923 P3: Sa karon mas dako man jud akoang oras sa pag online... Makaana ko nga
1924 maayo man akoang academic performace since na use to naman nako ning ig
77
75

1925 ani nga pamaagi og mas nakatabang man pud ni aron mabuhat nako akoang
1926 buluhaton sa pagskwela... Og in some point mas nakalimtan nako ang pressure,
1927 ang stress and other negativities nga pwede makadisturbo sa akoang pag
1928 skwela...

1929 Me: Are there things you want to share which were not talked from the things
1930 mentioned related to the impact of e-learning your academic performance? Could
1931 you share it then?

Mas i promote unta nila ang equity than equality kay
1934 dli tanan: Signal parehas kusog, Kompleto og gamit, Daghag kwarta og
1935 Gisayunan sa in ani nga sistema.

1936 Interview Transcription (Participant 4)

1937 Me: How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect your life as a student? Please tell
1938 us more about it.

1939 P4: During this pandemic makapanibago, sometimes mafeel ko na mas better
1940 online class kesa face to face kasi mas makateamwork and may possiblity na
1941 mas mataas grades na makuha namin compared to normal class hindi talaga
1942 siya effective. Wala kaming natutunan, nagapass nalang kami ng quiz or
1943 assignments for completion na lang kasi may deadline and for our grades.

1944 Me: As a student, how do you cope with the changes that this pandemic has
1945 cause? Can you give me more details about it?

1946 P4: Self-care, having enough sleep and reduce all other sources of my stress by
1947 doing anything that makes me happy.

1948 Me: What is your opinion about the use of e-learning to deliver education to the
1949 students? Are you in favor of it, or not? Why? Please elaborate your answer.

1950 P4: No, online class cost too much. Online learning is inaccessible to the
1951 computer illiterate population.
78
76

1952 Me: How do e-learning affect your grades? Why do you say so? Tell me more
1953 about it.

1954 P4: Nagbaba siya kuya haha. Meron kasi akong naging teacher na hindi
1955 nagaconsider sa mga problems na ma-encounter naming. No more second
1956 chances. Then meron din iba, hindi kami makaask bakit ganun grades naming
1957 kasi hindi niya man ipakita ano result ng mga quizzes or exams naming, hindi din
1958 siya approachable.

1959 Me: Do you think you perform better in e-learning? Why? Can you give me more
1960 details about it?

1961 P4: No, kasi wala akong natutunan ngayon na school year WAHAHHAA. I mean,

1966 Me: How does the internet connection affect the way how understand the
1967 lessons during your online discussion? Would you mind elaborating your
1968 response further?

1969 P4: The internet is very useful. Since we have online school now, having a stable
1970 internet connection is important. There are tendencies when the internet is low
1971 and students who want to learn, cannot learn. Unfortunately, that happens a lot
1972 and it affects the student's knowledge. As much as possible, we have to find a
1973 place where there is secured connection with less background noises. The
1974 internet connections can be an issue but it certainly helps us especially with
1975 online classes.

1976 Me: Do you think you will perform better in online class if you have complete
1977 gadgets like smartphones and laptops? Why? Can you give me more details
1978 about it?
79
77

1983 natutunan, yung yung problem.

1984 Me: How does e-learning improve your skills and knowledge in mathematics?
1985 Can you tell me more about it?

1986 P4: Pwede wala jud nag improve ya? Against jud ko sa online class
1987 wAHAHAHHAHA

1988 Me: How does e-learning affect your motivation in studying and answering all the
1989 school works and projects online? Tell me more about it.

1993 Me: Do you think that you remember all the learning and knowledge you have
1994 learned in your online class?

1999 ngayong school year WAHAHAHHAAHA

2000 Me: To your opinion, is the lessons and materials use during online class are
2001 easy to understand and makes you perform better academically? Why do you
2002 say so?

2005 makaask because ang conference namin is for oral recitation lang.
80
78

2006 Me: How does the number of hours you spend online and offline affect your
2007 academic performance? Why do you say so? Can you tell me more about it?

2008 P4: Online naman ako parati but still in terms of my academic performance hindi
2009 ko pa din feel na second year na ako kasi parang hindi ako estudyante this
2010 school year kasi nga ayun more on completion nalang kami sa pag submit ng
2011 mga tasks without learning or fully understand our lesson.

2012 Me: Are there things you want to share which were not talked from the things
2013 mentioned related to the impact of e-learning your academic performance? Could
2014 you share it then?

2015 P4: Wala na ya WHAAHA

2016 Interview Transcription (Participant 5)

2017 Me: How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect your life as a student? Please tell
2018 us more about it.

2019 P5: The Covid-19 pandemic brought many changes in my life as student. Since
2020 e-learning is new to me, I had a difficult time in adjusting to the various changes
2021 that it brought the teaching and learning process. I cannot perform well in class
2022 because I have a weak internet connection. I tend to procrastinate more because
2023 this type of learning makes me lazy. Since I am just studying from home, I also
2024 encountered many distractions.

2025 Me: As a student, how do you cope with the changes that this pandemic has
2026 cause? Can you give me more details about it?

2027 P5: To cope with the changes, I disciplined myself. I forced myself to be more
2028 responsible, like I do my assignments and activities ahead of time so that I will
2029 not have a late submission. I also made an adjustment with my study area. I
2030 transferred to an area where internet connection is much stronger. I also
2031 practiced proper time management so that I can balance house works with
2032 school works.
81
79

2033 Me: What is your opinion about the use of e-learning to deliver education to the
2034 students? Are you in favor of it, or not? Why? Please elaborate your answer.

2035 P5: E-learning is a brilliant way to continue learning in the middle of the
2036 pandemic but I am not in favor with this type of education. I believe that face to
2037 face classes is much more effective. E-learning has many limitations like limited
2038 interaction between students and the teacher. There is also no actual
2039 demonstration of things that should be demonstrated actually. Cheating is also
2040 rampant and is very easy to do in online classes. I still believe that genuine
2041 learning can only be achieved in face to face classes.

2042 Me: How do e-learning affect your grades? Why do you say so? Tell me more
2043 about it.

2044 P5: So far, e-learning has given me grades that are higher than my grades in the
2045 previous semester. I think this is because I have plenty of time to study and do
2046 school works and you can open quizzes and activities any time before the
2047 deadline. Activities were also limited. Although I struggled in the beginning, I got
2048 high grades because of the discipline I imposed with myself and the instructors
2049 were also considerate.

2050 Me: Do you think you perform better in e-learning? Why? Can you give me more
2051 details about it?

2052 P5: I got higher grades in e-learning but I still believe that I perform better on the
2053 face the face classes. This is because student's performance are only limited in
2054 e-learning and I observed that I only learn concepts and theories without
2055 performing or doing their applications.

2056 Me: How does the internet connection affect the way how understand the
2057 lessons during your online discussion? Would you mind elaborating your
2058 response further?

2059 P5: Internet connection is the most crucial factor during online discussion. If the
2060 internet connection is strong, then lessons will be easier to understand and if the
82
80

2061 internet connection is weak, then the student will not be able to catch up with the
2062 discussion. So strong internet connection is really the key for effective learning in
2063 online classes.

2064 Me: Do you think you will perform better in online class if you have complete
2065 gadgets like smartphones and laptops? Why? Can you give me more details
2066 about it?

2067 P5: Yes, because if I don't have such gadgets, then it will be hard for me to do
2068 and pass my activities. If I don't have one of those, then I couldn't really perform
2069 well in my online classes. It is really important to have a complete set of gadgets
2070 as it is one of the key factors that could affect a student's success in online
2071 classes.

2072 Me: How does e-learning improve your skills and knowledge in mathematics?
2073 Can you tell me more about it?

2074 P5: E-learning teaches me how to do self-study because the online discussions
2075 are only limited. Because of these, I was able to train my mathematical skills and
2076 I was able to discover different techniques of solving equations and problem. I
2077 can say that my knowledge and skills in Mathematics have improved because of
2078 the challenge of not having enough time for discussions and explanation of topics
2079 during online classes.

2080 Me: How does e-learning affect your motivation in studying and answering all the
2081 school works and projects online? Tell me more about it.

2082 P5: E-learning doesn't really motivate me in studying and answering all the
2083 school works and project online. In fact, e-learning is sometimes very
2084 discouraging because of the unstable internet connection. There are many times
2085 that I really don't want to do school works because Internet connection really
2086 pissed me.

2087 Me: Do you think that you remember all the learning and knowledge you have
2088 learned in your online class?
83
81

2089 P5: I think I will remember some but not all. I believe that online classes are less
2090 effective than actual classes in inculcating knowledge to a student's mind.

2091 Me: To your opinion, is the lessons and materials use during online class are
2092 easy to understand and makes you perform better academically? Why do you
2093 say so?

2094 P5: Yes, the materials used during the online classes are easy to understand and
2095 it made me perform better academically during online classes. It is because the
2096 given and used materials contains complete informations about the topics and its
2097 contents are easy to understand.

2098 Me: How does the number of hours you spend online and offline affect your
2099 academic performance? Why do you say so? Can you tell me more about it?

2100 P5: I believe that the number of hours I spend online and offline doesn't affect my
2101 academic performance. Other factors like internet connection, gadgets, and
2102 resources could affect but the number I spend online and offline could not.

2103 Me: Are there things you want to share which were not talked from the things
2104 mentioned related to the impact of e-learning your academic performance? Could
2105 you share it then?

2106 P5: I think e-learning is a good alternative way of learning during the pandemic
2107 but I believe it is not as effective as the face to face classes

2108 Interview Transcription (Participant 6)

2109 Me: How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect your life as a student? Please tell
2110 us more about it.

2111 P6: The pandemic has great effect sa akong life as a student. Ang usual nga
2112 learning environment kay na change into virtual nga dili kaayo nako sanay. Sa
2113 pag change sa way of teaching and learning nga cellphone or gadgets ra ang
2114 giatubang, nag adjust pud akong way of learning. Maka ingon gyud ko nga lahi ra
2115 kaayo akong learning capacity katung naga face-to-face pa. Karun nga sa balay
84
82

2116 ra ko while learning, naka apekto sab sya sa akong mental drive to study. Dati
2117 focused kaau ko to learn the lesson kay gina discuss man with the teacher
2118 infront.

2121 Me: As a student, how do you cope with the changes that this pandemic has
2122 cause? Can you give me more details about it?

2123 P6: As a student, ang changes nga dala sa pandemic is very challenging. To
2124 cope up with it, gina try nako akong best nga mag self-learning. Actually I am a
2125 person nga fond sa pagpaminaw sa ideas sa uban so that I can collect ideas.
2126 Karun lisod makipag communicate with my classmates kay tungod sa sitwasyon
2127 ug sa hina nga internet. So akong ginabuhat is mag surf online to know about
2128 something. Regarding naman sa change of learning environment, is sa akong
2129 gibuhat to cope up with the change is ang pag set ug learning space nako, so
2130 that ma set akong mind everytime I am studying.

2131 Me: What is your opinion about the use of e-learning to deliver education to the
2132 students? Are you in favor of it, or not? Why? Please elaborate your answer.

2133 P6: The use of e-learning to deliver education is very helpful in this time of
2134 pandemic. For me, I am in favor of its use in the field of education. But, I think too
2135 much of its utilization can minimize students sense of social value, in terms of
2136 interaction, social cues, and intimacy/relationship. In this time of modern world,
2137 dapat naay face-to-face interaction gihapon ang learners with their teachers and
And
2139 ang face-to-face learning is dapat ma reinforce sa online class. In general, I
2140 believe that it is more effective to learn if both f2f and online class are present in
2141 the learning experience.

2142 Me: How do e-learning affect your grades? Why do you say so? Tell me more
2143 about it.
85
83

2144 P6: Comparing my grades from previous semesters nga naa pay face-to-face, I
2145 think walay significant difference sa akong grades during online class. I think the
2146 only difference is the drive to srlf-learn nga nakatabang para maningkamot ko.
2147 Also, I think I can't see the big difference kay bag o ra man nag sugod ang online
2148 class. Its more than a semester pa lang ang akong online class experience so I
2149 can't really see the difference in my performances.

2150 Me: Do you think you perform better in e-learning? Why? Can you give me more
2151 details about it?

2152 P6: Well, para sa akoa, I perform better in e-learning. Ang paggamit sa mga
2153 technological softwares sa paghimo ug assignments and presentations kay
2154 convenient and I am able to utilize technology sa akong learning. It is better in
2155 the sense that, formal tan awon akong outputs and it is in the trend.

2156 Me: How does the internet connection affect the way how understand the lessons
2157 during your online discussion? Would you mind elaborating your response
2158 further?

2159 P6: The internet connection is really a big factor on how I understand the
2160 lessons during online discussion.
So sa kawad an ug information nga madunggan, gamay ra akong
2163 masabtan, or worst wala gyud koy nasabtan. Also, in the time of recitation, mag

2165 Me: Do you think you will perform better in online class if you have complete
2166 gadgets like smartphones and laptops? Why? Can you give me more details
2167 about it?

2168 P6: Yes, I think I can do better if I have complete gadgets. Smartphones are for
2169 direct communication and conferencing. Laptops are for doing homeworks,
2170 especially in making documents and reports. Pwede sab ang laptop gamiton
2171 pang conferencing, usually for presentation purposes. With this being said,
86
84

2172 daghan ko mahimo in a span of minutes. Kaysa kung smartphone lang ang naa
2173 sa akoa, I find it hard to edit documents and make reports sa phone mismo. If I
2174 have complete gadgets, then I would have convenient means to finish reports
2175 and requirements. Thus, I can perform better.

2176 Me: How does e-learning improve your skills and knowledge in mathematics?
2177 Can you tell me more about it?

2178 P6: E-learning helps me improve my skills and knowledge in mathematics

2179 through the proximity I have with search engines and sources of information.
2180 Duol na lang kaau ko sa opportunity to search for some mathematical ideas and
2181 know more about it. In the face-to-face setting where we are at classrooms, ang
2182 sources of information is limited labi nag wala kay data para mag search ug info
2183 as reinforcement sa gina discuss. While in online class, I am already online
2184 during class so I can search something on the internet whenever I want.

2185 Me: How does e-learning affect your motivation in studying and answering all the
2186 school works and projects online? Tell me more about it.

2187 P6: This, I think, is the very challenging sa akoang part in this e-learning. Na feel
2188 jud nako ang kalahian sa akoang motivation to study during f2f sa karun online
2189 nga klase. Nag decrease akoang motivation kay nag salig na lang ko na I can
2190 search for a certain information kay d man ko makita sa akong teacher. Kanang
2192 akoa.

2193 Me: Do you think that you remember all the learning and knowledge you have
2194 learned in your online class?

2195 P6: Nope, I don't think so.
2198 me to learn it nga dili malimtan, dili na hinoon kay ang discussion is putol putol or
2199 dili masabtan.
87
85

2200 Me: To your opinion, is the lessons and materials use during online class are
2201 easy to understand and makes you perform better academically? Why do you
2202 say so?

2203 P6: I think the lessons and materials used during online class is good and easy
2204 to understand. The means by which discussion can now be recorded and posted
2205 online, pwede mag review ang learner to fully understand the topic. In this way,
2206 maka learn ug maau ang learner.

2207 Me: How does the number of hours you spend online and offline affect your
2208 academic performance? Why do you say so? Can you tell me more about it?

2209 P6: The number of hours I spent online and offline dont have that critical effect in
2210 my academic performance. I am usually online but not studying or surfing about
2211 the lesson. I may be online but it does not mean I am studying. And usually I am
2212 studying offline. I like to study when no pop up info disturb me. So I like to have
2213 books where I can study my lesson.

2214 Me: Are there things you want to share which were not talked from the things
2215 mentioned related to the impact of e-learning your academic performance? Could
2216 you share it then?

2217 P6: None. So far I expressed my utmost concerns regarding e-learning in the
2218 above answers. So I think thats all I can share

2219 Interview Transcription (Participant 7)

2220 Me: How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect your life as a student? Please tell
2221 us more about it.

2222 P7: It affects me emotionally and financially. Of course, we aren't allowed to go

2223 out and everythings so strict, I gave up my job in the fast-food chain that I am
2224 working with. Yet, I am looking forward to its blessings in disguise.

2225 Me: As a student, how do you cope with the changes that this pandemic has
2226 cause? Can you give me more details about it?
88
86

2227 P7: I fixed my mindset and took responsibility about my priorities such as being a
2228 good student l, daughter and a sister. I appreciate little things and family
2229 gatherings in our own home and because of it I was able to enjoy and sees the
2230 good side of the pandemic lockdowns.

2231 Me: What is your opinion about the use of e-learning to deliver education to the
2232 students? Are you in favor of it, or not? Why? Please elaborate your answer.

2233 P7: I am in favor with it, because I just can bring with me my classes in wherever
2234 places I go but more of that there were also a part of me that missed the
2235 actual/physical bond I share with my friends at school.

2236 Me: How do e-learning affect your grades? Why do you say so? Tell me more
2237 about it.

2238 P7: Well, I couldn't say that I have done good enough but then I have been more
2239 focus, self-directed and responsible for my own learning so I was able to get an
2240 good grades that every students wanted.

2241 Me: Do you think you perform better in e-learning? Why? Can you give me more
2242 details about it?

2243 P7: Yes, I do. because I was able to write down notes and listen to my prof
2244 without any distractions just that low internet connection and glitches worries my
2245 soul.

2246 Me: How does the internet connection affect the way how understand the lessons
2247 during your online discussion? Would you mind elaborating your response
2248 further?

2249 P7: It would greatly affect me and some of the other students because low
2250 internet connection will cause absence to discussions.

2251 Me: Do you think you will perform better in online class if you have complete
2252 gadgets like smartphones and laptops? Why? Can you give me more details
2253 about it?
89
87

2254 P7: Yes, because I can expand my horizon plus it would make me more
2255 competent about online stuffs..

2256 Me: How does e-learning improve your skills and knowledge in mathematics?
2257 Can you tell me more about it?

2258 P7: This questions bothers me in different level. Actually, I am somehow losing
2259 hope with my math subjects for I found myself incompetent. Before l, I was able
2260 to be one of the top students who excel in solving math problems but now, I am
2261 just somebody yet because of online class, I am determined to get back the
2262 motivation to learn.

2263 Me: How does e-learning affect your motivation in studying and answering all the
2264 school works and projects online? Tell me more about it.

2265 P7: Whenever I go online, there's part of me that plurge to surfing facebook and
2266 other social medias cites, and the motivation I used to not forget whatever tasks
2267 that was laid online is looling towards my wildest dreams and my parents. So,
2268 procrastination has no room but because of my busy schedules sometimes, I
2269 asked for extensions and luckily profs were considerate so the learning is not so
2270 stressful.

2271 Me: Do you think that you remember all the learning and knowledge you have
2272 learned in your online class?

2273 P7: Nope, I am no genius but I can remember some knowledge that impacted
2274 me. If it does not, then its a no-no, I'm just being honest anyways.

2275 Me: To your opinion, is the lessons and materials use during online class are
2276 easy to understand and makes you perform better academically? Why do you
2277 say so?

2278 P7: yes, as I am a digital native it was easy for me to learn and apply those given
2279 instructions yet I'm not gonna lie, I don't know everything so I need a constant
2280 learning and relearning processes.
90
88

2281 Me: How does the number of hours you spend online and offline affect your
2282 academic performance? Why do you say so? Can you tell me more about it?

2283 P7: I already laid out the pros of online class but the disadvantage of it was its
2284 demanding of my time. Since, some.of the teachers assumption is that we are
2285 always available so they create more assignments and to do's without knowing
2286 that they get most of our time and we have been academically drained.

2287 Me: Are there things you want to share which were not talked from the things
2288 mentioned related to the impact of e-learning your academic performance? Could
2289 you share it then?

2290 P7: I just hope that teachers will get more sensitive about the students
2291 availabilities at times, and lay-out platforms about students who wanna cope-up
2292 especially during recitations that they weren't able to attend to. Since, e-learning
2293 sometimes is exhausting and connections is time draining.

2294 Interview Transcription (Participant 8)

2295 Me: How does the Covid-19 pandemic affect your life as a student? Please tell
2296 us more about it.

2297 P8: Covid-19 is evidently affecting my life as a student. It made my studies more
2298 complicated due to the lots of adjustments to encounter. It is hard for me to be in
2299 this situation where in fact it is not the daily activities I used to do. Addition to
2300 that, its difficult for me to focus and catch up all the lessons that is taught to us
2301 virtually because of many hindrances such as the connection, environment and
2302 etc.

2303 Me: As a student, how do you cope with the changes that this pandemic has
2304 cause? Can you give me more details about it?

2305 P8: Honestly, this changes cause by pandemic is really difficult to adopt since it
2306 is not the routine that we use to do. However, as a student I have no choice but
2307 to cope with all the changes cause by this pandemic. It said that this school year
91
89

2308 enrollment is a choice whether you will enroll or not, but of course if you choose
2309 to enroll then you have no choice but to adopt all the changes just to continue
2310 study and learning. Therefore, it’s about acceptance.

2311 Me: What is your opinion about the use of e-learning to deliver education to the
2312 students? Are you in favor of it, or not? Why? Please elaborate your answer.

2313 P8: E-learning in our country is not popular unlike to other countries that are rich
2314 and has speed internet provider. Since this type of learning is applied here in the
2315 Philippines to sustain the needed learning for the learners as much as possible, it
2316 is quietly challenging and exciting where we are able to experience this new
2317 learning system. Whether if Im favor of it or not? Well, I have both of the opinion.
2318 Im favor of it because I have no choice, I enrolled myself this school year then I
2319 have to in this just to continue my study and not to waste school year since my
2320 batch is the pilot of K to 12 programs. In contradiction, if Im not enrolled im not
2321 favor of due to the expenses and it causes a lot of money where gadgets for
2322 learning and internet connection here in the Philippines evidently expensive.

2323 Me: How do e-learning affect your grades? Why do you say so? Tell me more
2324 about it.

2325 P8: Since we are not yet good in e-learning, it really affects my grades. Some of
2326 my subjects has a high grade and some of it has low but not that low as what we
2327 say failed. Honestly, during e- learning there lots of crimes involved in between
2328 the screen. High grades form subjects where there are cheating occurs because
2329 of laziness or being hard to focus on the discussions due to a lot of hindrances.
2330 Low grades for some difficult subject such as major subject because of those
2331 hindrances that triggers our learning and made us difficult to catch up all those
2332 learning taught to us.

2333 Me: Do you think you perform better in e-learning? Why? Can you give me more
2334 details about it?
92
90

2335 P8: I guess yes, it helps me to boost up my confidence since I don’t see people
2336 beside very time recitations. And during the activities or assignment I gave more
2337 time in doing it because of the internet as my source anytime in doing such.

2338 Me: How does the internet connection affect the way how understand the lessons
2339 during your online discussion? Would you mind elaborating your response
2340 further?

2341 P8: Internet connection is a big factor us for to be able to understand the lessons
2342 during virtual discussion. If the connection is weak, all the lessons will be
2343 triggered too. It because we aren’t able to understand the lesson if the part of the
2344 discussion is missing of learning to the weak connection. Its not the subject nor
2345 the instructors is the enemy, it’s the connection that made us difficult to learn.

2346 Me: Do you think you will perform better in online class if you have complete
2347 gadgets like smartphones and laptops? Why? Can you give me more details
2348 about it?

2349 P8: Yes of course. In e learning, tools are really needed to sustain learning. It
2350 could be helpful to attend the virtual discussion, make all the activities and other
2351 things to done. Without these tools, e-learning would be useless and as a student
2352 its difficult for to perform well and include myself in learning.

2353 Me: How does e-learning improves your skills and knowledge in mathematics?
2354 Can you tell me more about it?

2355 P8: Im not sure about this one. In my situation, I learned more in face-to-face in
2356 math and its difficult for to learn faster because of this platform because I cant
2357 focus more. However, through YouTube I can fill in those l didn’t understand but
2358 for me its not enough. Learning in mathematics for me is much good and easier
2359 through face-to-face discussion.

2360 Me: How does e-learning affect your motivation in studying and answering all the
2361 school works and projects online? Tell me more about it.
93
91

2362 P8: Since I have difficulties to focus in the lesson during virtual discussion, I lost
2363 my motivation to learn. During this pandemic and still adopting these changes, I
2364 can say that I’m not more on Sad learning but instead as long as I comply all the
2365 requirements, activities, and other things to comply. This means that learning for
2366 me is disregarded, but the important is to comply. I can’t deny it since this is how
2367 this e-learning works for me during this pandemic. However, I am honest that
2368 tried my best in engage myself in learning and to learn more but availability of
2369 resources and the environment is my main enemy.

2370 Me: Do you think that you remember all the learning and knowledge you have
2371 learned in your online class?

2372 P8: Honestly most of it I couldn’t remember since internet connection is weak
2373 that brings the virtual discussion not be good at delivering the lessons. The noisy,
2374 messy, and many destructions in my learning environment that triggers me also.
2375 As what I have said, due to those hindrances I don’t focus on learning but to
2376 submit what is needed to comply.

2377 Me: To your opinion, is the lessons and materials use during online class are
2378 easy to understand and makes you perform better academically? Why do you
2379 say so?

2380 P8: I know the teachers tried all their best to help their student learn despite of
2381 this pandemic. They tried what they can offer to their students and as a student I
2382 do admire them for that. However, no matter how hard they try hindrances as I
2383 mentioned above will be a great enemy during this e-learning.

2384 Me: How does the number of hours you spend online and offline affect your
2385 academic performance? Why do you say so? Can you tell me more about it?

2386 P8: I spend often 12 hours online. It will affect my academic performance but it
2387 depends on how I spend it. Sometime I spend most of time in browsing
2388 Facebook where I forgot to focus studying and making my assignments and it
2389 leads to negative performance. There are times also that I spend almost of my
94
92

2390 day online on looking for some learning that will support those missing learnings
2391 of mine that I understand during virtual discussion and it helps me to lift up my
2392 grade despite of this difficulties.

2393 Me: Are there things you want to share which were not talked from the things
2394 mentioned related to the impact of e-learning your academic performance? Could
2395 you share it then?

2396 P8: none
