INTRODUCTION
The SEAT Leon KL1 is the 4th generation of the model and is built using the MQB37W platform. The electrical
installation has new features, including new data Bus architectures and a new lighting concept.

The semi-hybrid system enhances the Start-Stop, energy recovery and Coasting
mode functions to reduce fuel consumption and polluting emissions even further. As
such, the new SEAT Leon is more respectful of the environment.

The functional interior lighting is used to indicate

different situations inside the vehicle, such as a door
opening or Side Assist. Thanks to this system, the
compartment is customised. This is done through the
infotainment system, allowing the colour and intensity to
be modified.

4
The data Bus architectures will vary depending on the equipment and are as follows:
• Low architecture.
• High architecture.
• mHEV architecture.

The exterior lighting has been updated compared to the

previous generation. The SEAT Leon lighting is formed
entirely of LEDs. As a new feature, the E1 light switch has
been replaced by the EX59 exterior lighting control unit.

The electrical installation has new features on the data

Buses. The new communication protocol CAN FD is
incorporated, as well as the new Ethernet Bus.

5
ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
The electrical installation is composed by a 12 V battery, the SA fuse holder, the SB fuse holder and the SC fuse
holder.
The electrical components are joined by 6 main wiring harnesses:
• Engine wiring harness.
• Compartment wiring harness.
• Engine compartment wiring harness.
• Front door wiring harness.
• Rear door wiring harness.
• Tailgate wiring harness.

12 V BATTERY
Depending on the vehicle equipment,
the battery may be AGM, EFB+ or EFB.

SA FUSE HOLDER
The SA fuse holder is mounted on the positive
terminal of the battery. The SA fuse holder includes
high-ampere fuses. They vary depending on
whether or not the vehicle incorporates the semi-
hybrid system. For vehicles with the semi-hybrid
system, the SA fuse holder has 2 fuses: one 400
A fuse for engine start-up and one 225 A fuse for
charging the 12 V battery from the A7 voltage
converter (48 V/12 V).

FUSE HOLDER SB
The SB fuse holder is mounted next to the
battery. Fuses and relays that feed the engine
compartment's components are mounted on the
SB fuse holder.

6
FUSE HOLDER SC
The SC fuse holder is mounted on the left side of
the dash panel.
This fuse folder includes fuses and relays that feed
the interior's components.

GROUND CONNECTION
An ground connection is mounted after the battery
for charging the battery or emergency start-up of
the engine.

DATA BUS DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE J533
The J533 data Bus diagnostic interface on the SEAT
Leon has two versions, depending on the equipment. Data Bus diagnostic interface J533 Low
• Low.
• High.
The Low J533 data Bus diagnostic interface uses
a 32-pin connector that locates the power terminals, 32-pin connector without the Ethernet Bus
CAN-Bus lines and an Ethernet Bus connection. activation port
The High J533 data Bus diagnostic interface uses
a 32-pin connector with the same functions as the Low
version and a 12-pin connector for the Ethernet Bus.
According to the CAN-Bus line, the protocol used is the
CAN-Bus 2.0 (already used in previous models) or the
new protocol CAN-Bus FD. This CAN is used in certain
CAN-Bus lines and employs flexible data technology
that allows up to 4 times more information to be sent
than with the CAN 2.0. The interface for the J533 data
Bus features the new Ethernet Bus for both versions.
This Bus allows communication speeds of up to 100
Mbps. Both the CAN-Bus FD and the Ethernet Bus are
described in the next pages:
The SEAT Leon has 3 architectures:
• Low architecture.
• High architecture.
• mHEV architecture.
The interface for the Low J533 data Bus is used in the
Low architecture and the interface for the High J533
data Bus is used for the High and mHEV architectures.

The Ethernet Bus uses point-to-point connections,

which means that the Ethernet Bus of one control unit is
connected via a twisted pair cable to another control
unit. To form networks with more than two control units,
one of the 2 must be equipped with a switch. Switches
allow both parts to send messages at the same time.
As such, a control unit can simultaneously send 100
Mbps and receive 100 Mbps. There are no collisions in
accessing the Bus, as with the CAN Bus, or wait times, as
with the MOST.

LIN-BUS ARCHITECTURE FOR

THE ONBOARD SUPPLY
The J519 onboard supply control unit manages up to 6
LIN-Bus lines. The LIN-Bus consists of a single-wire Bus
that is purple, with cable cross section of 0.35 mm that
does not require shielding. The operating speed reaches
a maximum of 20 Kbps.
This Bus uses a hierarchical architecture (master/slave),
and allows sensors or actuators to be connected to the Light 1 for front left door
control units. The system allows data to be exchanged background lighting L199

CONTROL UNIT EX59
The EX59 exterior lighting control unit is a touch switch
that replaces the traditional rotary control for the lights.
This unit is located in the same area as the previous
rotary control.
The EX59 exterior lighting control unit forms part of the
new button design on the SEAT Leon. As such, certain
button functions have been taken over by this unit.
The functions that have been taken over are:
• Light switching mode.
• Front fog light switching mode.
• Rear fog light switching mode.
• Front demister switching mode.
• Rear demister switching mode.
The buttons of the EX59 exterior lighting control unit are
capacitive. A LED included in each ideogram shows the
functions it is alternating between with each press.
In contrast to the previous rotary light switch, this is
connected to the J519 onboard supply control unit via
the Visibility LIN-Bus. This unit receives the request
to switch on the lights and generates a CAN signal to
request the switching on of the lights via the Private
CAN-Bus.
Via the “Mode” switch, the lights, fog lights and rear
window and windscreen demister are activated and
deactivated alternately by repetitive touches on the
corresponding ideogram.
The lighting control management is now automatic
and shows the information on the dash panel insert.
The modes change depending on the user interaction,
driving conditions and day/night cycle.

• Diffuser.
• Guiding light.
• Wrap Around trim.
• Light 1 for dashboard background lighting L292.
The cooling cover is attached to the dashboard.
Wrap Around trim
It serves as a trim and allows the assembly to be
ventilated. The reflector creates an area of darkness
in the rear so that the light is projected forwards. The
diffuser serves as a support for the guiding light
assembly and for each L292 light 1 for dashboard
background lighting.. Both the diffuser and the guiding
light are made of polycarbonate.
The Wrap Around trim is offered in different colours
depending on the vehicle finish.
To generate the lighting effect over the entire surface,
the system has 8 L292 lights 1 for dashboard
background lighting. These units use RGB technology,
which allows up to 6 colours to be selected. Each unit
has its own entity, which allows the system to switch
each one on and off independently. They are powered
by battery voltage and each unit is connected to the
Smart Light LIN-Bus. The 8 units are divided into 2
groups, 4 for the flat part and 4 for the curved part.

HEATING ON THE STEERING WHEEL Foam Interior reinforcement

The heating system on the steering wheel consists

of: Heating mesh
• Data Bus diagnostic interface J533.
• Climatronic control unit J255.
• Control unit in dash panel insert J285. Exterior mesh
• Onboard supply control unit J519.
• Steering column module control unit J527.
• Heated steering wheel sender G428.
• Heating mesh.
• Multifunction steering wheel control unit J453.
The heating on the steering wheel allows 3 levels Insulation
of comfort. Level 1 reaches a temperature of 38ºC,
level 2 reaches 43ºC and level 3 reaches 48ºC. The Leather coating
temperature data are obtained by means of the G428
heated steering wheel sender. This is an NTC sensor.
The heating mesh is capable of emitting a radiation
power of up to 110 W. The mesh covers the entire
steering wheel rim and is located just after the foam
layer.
The button to request the heating is located on the
J453 multifunction steering wheel control unit and
it recognises different combinations for activating the
steering wheel heating levels. The different levels can be
recognised from the dash panel insert.
The button sequence is divided into:
• Short press.
• Long press.
With a short press (less than 1 second), the heating
is connected at maximum level. By pressing the heating
request key repeatedly, the required level is adjusted, Minimum level Intermediate level
with a maximum of 3. Disconnection is carried out in the
same way as the level request, pressing repeatedly until
the OFF icon of the heated steering wheel is shown on
the dash panel insert.
With a long press (more than 1 second), the system
is disconnected regardless of the selected level. By
doing another long press on the steering wheel button,
the heating is connected directly at the last level stored
prior to disconnection.
The heating on the steering wheel only works when the
engine is on.

ACTIVITY DETECTION ON THE

STEERING WHEEL
Steering column module control
The activity detection on the steering wheel is a unit J527 Connector 01
system that is able to detect when the driver enters into
contact with the steering wheel rim.
The activity detection system on the steering wheel
consists of:
• Data Bus diagnostic interface J533.
• Steering column module control unit J527.
• Control unit in dash panel insert J285.
• Control unit for steering wheel contact detection
J1158.
• Capacitive mesh.
For recognition, the system uses a capacitive mesh
with 3 detection zones: interior mesh, left exterior mesh
and right exterior mesh. The mesh covers the entire
steering wheel rim and is located just after the insulation
mesh. The insulation mesh protects the capacitive
mesh from the radiation emitted by the heating mesh.
Connector 03/04
The J527 steering column module control unit has
undergone some modifications. These modifications
Connector 02

SEMI-HYBRID SYSTEM (MHEV)
The new SEAT Leon optionally offers the mHEV system
(mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) or the semi-hybrid
system. This system reduces fuel consumption and
the polluting emissions of the motor and improves the
driving comfort.
For system operation, changes, new components and
new functions have been introduced to the electrical
installation.
In terms of the electrical installation, vehicles with the
semi-hybrid system are equipped with a 48 V network,
as well as the 12 V network. These 2 networks operate in
parallel and continuously.
The 48 V network requires new components, the
naming of the terminals and new colour codes. The
components that make up the system are:
• 48 V battery A6.
• Alternator C29.
• Voltage converter (48 V/12 V) A7.
The names of the terminals are:
• Terminal 40 for 48 V positive.
• Terminal 41 for 48 V negative
The colour coding of the cables is as follows:
• Purple for 48 V positive (terminal 40).
• Brown with a purple strip for 48 V ground (terminal 41).
The semi-hybrid system incorporates 5 functions that
work without the need for interaction on the part of the
driver.
The functions of the semi-hybrid system are:
• Start-Stop.
• Comfort start.
• Energy recovery.
• Support function for the engine (Boost function).
• Coasting mode.

• Engine is still in the warm-up phase.
• Excessive engine oil temperature.
• Air conditioning system prevents the automatic stop of
the engine.
• Battery charge level too low.
• Start-Stop disconnection request by the driver.
The difference with micro-hybrid systems (µHEV) is the
engine start-up. The initial start-up of the engine after
switching the ignition on is done with the starter. The
start-up of the engine during the stop phases of the
Start-Stop is done with the C29 alternator.
The comfort start is performed via the C29 alternator
when the speed is more than 15 km/h and not with the
starter.
In energy recovery, the kinetic energy is used during
the deceleration phases to charge the battery. With
the semi-hybrid system and the inclusion of the 48 V
battery, the energy recovery reaches a recovery power
of up 12 kW/h.

SEMI-HYBRID SYSTEM (MHEV)
The semi-hybrid system (mHEV) uses a series of
control units that allow it to carry out functions for fuel
economy. The components that make up the system
are:
• Voltage converter (48 V/12 V) A7.
• 48 V battery A6.
• Alternator C29.
• Data Bus diagnostic interface J533.
• Airbag control unit J234.
• Climatronic control unit J255.
• Engine/motor control unit J623.
• Mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox J743.
Some of the components that make up the semi-hybrid
system use a 48 V network. The 48 V network has the
necessary power to carry out the start-up and driving
functions.
The components of the 48 V network are:
• 48 V battery A6.
• Voltage converter (48 V/12 V) A7.
• Alternator C29.
Airbag control unit
The A6 48 V battery stores the voltage generated J234
by the alternator. As such, the voltage is available to
power the C29 alternator and convert it into an electric
machine to support the engine or as a starter in specific
moments. The battery contains a relay to disconnect
the 48-volt battery. It is a normally open relay and
closes when terminal 15 is closed. The opening of the
relay is requested, if necessary, via the J234 airbag
control unit.
The A7 voltage converter (48 V/12 V) has 2 functions:
• Charging the 12 V battery. 30
• Charging the 48 V battery.
The charging of the 12 V battery is controlled via the
J367 battery monitoring control unit. The A6 48 V
battery is charged via the C29 alternator or from an 30
external charger connected to the 12 V battery.
The C29 alternator generates alternating current to
subsequently convert it into 48 V direct current. This
current charges the A6 48 V battery and via the A7 12 V relay
voltage converter (48 V/12 V), the 12 V battery.

The J533 data Bus diagnostic interface performs the

energy management of the 12 V onboard supply, as
well as the 48 V onboard supply. The J533 receives
information about the status of the 12 V battery via
the J367 battery monitoring control unit via LIN-Bus.
The operating and state of charge information of the
components of the 48 V network is obtained via the
