What cues did the reader use to SC? (MSV)
Summary of Observations:
What did the reader do when encountering unknown words? Check all that apply.
___ Made no attempt ___ Asked for help
___ Looked at pictures (M) ___ Made the first sound (V)
___ Attempted to sound out (V) ___ Reread (M)
___ Skipped it & continued reading ___ Made repeated attempts
What cues did the reader use? (Look at the miscues.) MSV. If the reader used a
combination of cues (most do), what did he/she primarily rely on? Explain.
She primarily used visual miscues, and a few meaning and syntax miscues. Visual was the primary
miscue because she saw the starting letter of the word and substituted words she knew in the
place of the words she did not.
If you were going to do a teaching point immediately following this running record, what
one point would you go back and revisit? Remember that we aren’t trying to just clean
up errors; we’re looking for something that will move the child ahead in his future
reading.
I would have her take more time on words she may not know and sound them out.
Write a one-paragraph summary telling what you learned about the reader from
completing this running record.
What I learned about Anna Mae during this running record is that she has good fluency and tone of
voice while she reads. When she makes a mistake, it is often a word she does not know immediately
and then uses visual clues to try to figure the word out. She often repeats that word for the original
word if it shows up again in the text without realizing the words are actually different. I know she was
nervous seeing me sitting next to her while she was reading and I think that may have thrown her off a
little, as well as making her read quicker than usual.
