Collective nouns are nouns that represent a collection or group of persons,


animals, or things. They are usually followed by the preposition “of” then the plural
form of the noun being referred to:

collective noun + "of" + plural noun

The table below contains examples of collective nouns for groups of different
persons, animals, and things.

NOTE:
Even if collective nouns refer to several individuals, do not confuse them
with plural nouns. Plural nouns refer to more than one of a particular noun
and are denoted by adding an “s” to the end of a word. A collective noun is a
word used in place for several individual persons, animals, or things.
Collective nouns can be used in both singular and plural forms.

Examples:
A band of musicians passed through the street playing a sweet melody.
Bands of musicians passed through the street playing a sweet melody.
