McCain Foods (India) produces frozen foods and generates wastewater with high levels of fat, oil, and grease (FOG) from various vegetable oils used. Bioxgreen implemented a bioremediation process using a specialized microbial consortium to aerobically degrade the organic compounds contributing to FOG. This reduced FOG levels in the wastewater to less than 5mg/L and provided an eco-friendly solution to control FOG without modifying the existing wastewater treatment plant. The microbial consortium was developed by Bioxgreen to specifically breakdown complex organic molecules from food and beverage industries.

Case Study

Reduction of Fat Oil and Grease (FOG) in Effluent Generated From a Food
Processing Unit [McCain Food (India) Ltd], Mehsana, Gujarat.

McCain Foods (India) is a wholly-owned


subsidiary of McCain Foods Limited in Canada.
Since 1998, McCain has been engaged in
agriculture R&D and in development of frozen
food market in India and subcontinent
countries. McCain products are used by leading
fast food chains, hotels, restaurants, catering
companies and are popular for in-home
consumption

The waste water generated from manufacturing


unit had high FOG concentration. The source of
FOG was different vegetable oils, contributing
different types of fatty acids. The fatty acids
combine in a various number of ways on the
glycerol hydroxyl groups. The pollution load in
terms of FOG, varied based on the production
process. The spike in FOG levels could not be
controlled in the primary treatment units and
was getting carried over to the aeration lagoon,
thus leading to upset of the entire aeration
lagoon system.

Bioxgreen provides turnkey solutions to


meet the customer's need. Bioremediation
of effluents was carried out using special
and very effective microbial consortium
(BXGE 0206), developed by Bioxgreen.
Organic compounds contributing to FOG
underwent aerobic degradation to reduce
the FOG at the outlet of aeration lagoon to
less than 5mg/L.
