CALCULATION TO VERIFY NEED OF LIGHTNING PROTECTION

A NOTES

1) This document covers lightning protection calculations for the buildings.

2) High structures provided with lightning protection also provides lightning protection to the other buildings/ structures
falling within it's zone of protection. ( As per IS 2309 : 1989 Clause No. 8.2 ) .

3) This aspect shall be checked separately and buildings / structures falling within the zone of protection of the other
buildings / stack will not be provided with lightning protection.

4) For plant area , following shall be noted. Steel structures , vessels, tanks , towers , stacks etc. shall be earthed as per
the earthing practice.

5) Each down conductor shall be provided with a dedicated and separate earth electrode in test pit. This lightning
protection network shall be bonded with the main plant earth grid at least at two points below ground.

B BASIC DESIGN : -

It is required that each and every building / structure is protected from the risk of lightning protection .No exact
guidance can be given in this matter .But an assessment can be made taking in to account the exposure risk ( that is
risk of the structure being struck) based on the following factors called as weighting factors ( As per IS 2309 : 1989
Table 1A-1E).

1) Use to which the structure is put : weighting factor 'A'.

2) Nature of its construction : weighting factor 'B'

3) Consequential effects : weighting factor 'C'

4) Location of the structure : weighting factor 'D'

(degree of isolation)
5) Type of country : weighting factor 'E'

The probability of structure or building being struck by lightning in any one year is the product of the "lightning flash
density " and the effective collective area of the structure . The lightning flash density 'Ng' is the number of flashes to
ground per square kilometer per year.

The table on page 06 of IS -2309 1989 Clause No. 8.1.2 indicates the relationship between thunder storm days per
year and lightning flashes per square kilometer per year.

The effective collection of area ( As per IS 2309 : 1989 Clause No. 8.1.2 ) of structure is the area on the plan of the
structure extended in all directions to take account of its height. The edge of the effective collection area is displaced
from the edge of the structure by an amount equal to the height of the structure at that point. Hence for a simple
rectangular building of length (L) , width (W) and height (H) in meters , the collection area has length (L+2H) meters
and width (W+2H) meters with four rounded corners formed by quarter circles of radius H meters.

This gives a collection area , Ac in metre square as

Ac = ( L x W ) + 2*(L x H ) + 2*(W x H ) + Õ *H2

The probable number of strike ( As per IS 2309 : 1989 Clause No. 8.1.2 )(risk) to the structure per year is
P = Ac x Ng x 10 -6

It must be decided whether this risk 'P' is acceptable or some measure of protection is necessary.

As per IS 2309 : 1989 Clause No. 8.1.3 , the acceptable risk figure has been taken as 10 –5
that is 1 in 1,00,000 per
year.

Having established the value of 'P' , to decide the probable no. of strikes to the structure per year, weighting factors
are applied. If this resultant figure exceeds the acceptable risk figure i.e. 10 - 5, then protection is required for that
structure/building.

C CALCULATION Page 3 of 6

For DM Plant MCC building, the need of protection is assessed as follows.

Length (L) = 29 m

Width (W) = 13 m

Height (H) = 16.02 m

Collection area As per IS 2309 : 1989 page no.-10 ,

Ac = ( L x W ) + 2*(L x H ) + 2*(W x H ) + π*H 2
= 2528.5309 m2

The probable number of strike ( As per IS 2309 : 1989 Clause No. 8.1.2 ) (risk) to the structure per year is,
P = Ac x Ng x 10 -6

Corresponding to thunderstrom days/year for ANGUL, Lightning flash density selected

from Page No.6 Clause No. 8.1.2 of IS-2309:1989 as Ng = 6.9
P = 0.017447

Different weighting factors adopted from the table as per IS 2309 : 1989 Table 1A-1E
A = 1 B = 0.4 C = 0.8 D = 1 E = 1

P0 = PXAXBXCXDXE

P0 = 0.00558300 > 0.00001

Hence Protection is required for DM Plant MCC building.

D DOWN CONDUCTORS SYSTEM :

The principal components of a lightning protection system are

a) Air terminations d) Testing joints
b) Down conductors e) Earth terminations
c) Joints & bonds f) Earth electrodes in test pit
The recommended material of air termination network, down conductor and earth termination is galvanised steel as
per clause 11.1 of IS 2309 : 1989

The minimum recommended size of lightning conductor provided for horizontal air termination and
down conductors is 25mm X 3mm GS flat. as per IS 2309 : 1989, Clause No. 11.1

Air termination network consist of vertical or horizontal conductors or combination of both. The maximum mesh size
recommended in the IS 2309 : 1989 is 20 m x 10 m.

The position and spacing of down conductors on large structures is often governed by architectural convenience,
however recommendations for their number are given below.
`
The number of down conductor should be the smaller of three following cases a), b) and c): [Ref, Cl.no.12.2.3 of IS:2309]
(a)The number of down conductor (where the base area of the structure protected is less than 100 sq.m.) = 1
(b)The number of down conductor (One plus an additional one for each 300 sq. m of base area,or a part thereof ,in excess of the first
100 sq.m.of base area) = (1+(W-100) / 300))
(c)The number of down conductor (One for each 30 m of perimeter of the structure protected.) = (S/30)

D1 For DM Plant MCC building. the No. of down conductors are calculated as follows,

Base Area of DM Plant MCC

building, B= (L x W ) m2 377.00 m2
No. of down conductors 1.92
~ Say 2

Perimeter of DM Plant MCC

building ,S = 2 x (L+W) = 84.00 m

No. of down conductors 2.80

~ Say 3

Hence 2 Nos. of down conductors are selected as as per Cl.no.12.2.3 of IS:2309, for DM Plant MCC building.

For DM DGT BUILDING., the need of protection is assessed as follows.

Length (L) = 7.0 m

Width (W) = 5.0 m

Height (H) = 8.15 m

Collection area As per IS 2309 : 1989 page no.-10 ,

Ac = ( L x W ) + 2*(L x H ) + 2*(W x H ) + π*H 2
= 439.16665 m2

The probable number of strike ( As per IS 2309 : 1989 Clause No. 8.1.2 ) (risk) to the structure per year is,
P = Ac x Ng x 10 -6
Corresponding to thunderstrom days/year for ANGUL, Lightning flash density selected
from Page No.6 Clause No. 8.1.2 of IS-2309:1989 as Ng = 6.9
P = 0.003030

Different weighting factors adopted from the table as per IS 2309 : 1989 Table 1A-1E
A = 1 B = 0.4 C = 0.8 D = 1 E = 1

P0 = PXAXBXCXDXE

P0 = 0.00096968 > 0.00001

Hence Protection is required for DM DGT BUILDING.

F DOWN CONDUCTORS SYSTEM :

The principal components of a lightning protection system are

a) Air terminations d) Testing joints
b) Down conductors e) Earth terminations
c) Joints & bonds f) Earth electrodes in test pit

The recommended material of air termination network, down conductor and earth termination is galvanised steel as

100 sq.m.of base area) = (1+(W-100) / 300))
(c)The number of down conductor (One for each 30 m of perimeter of the structure protected.) = (S/30)

F1 For DM DGT BUILDING. the No. of down conductors are calculated as follows,

Base Area of DM DGT BUILDING.,

B= (L x W ) m2 35.00 m2
No. of down conductors = 1 [Ref, Cl.no.12.2.3 (a) of IS:2309]

Hence 1 No. of down conductor is selected as as per Cl.no.12.2.3(a) of IS:2309, for DM DGT BUILDING.
