INTRODUCTION

INTACH is a repository of documented works containing

research on a host of subjects ranging over a gamut of heritage
issues. Our heritage is threatened today by many forces, natural
and manmade, and we have to record and preserve for future
generations and for our reading audience, the variety of issues
that confront us. Over the years the different divisions of
INTACH have produced and published a variety of books,
brochures and other related material which throws light on
our tangible and intangible heritage.
INTACH is a pioneer in the field of heritage conservation,
operating through over 200 voluntary chapters with a
membership of several thousand committed to the cause
of heritage. In this age of globalization and accelerated
economic activity our vision is concentrated on conservation
with development.
The Publication Division coordinates the production of books,
folders and other publicity material which reflects the work of
the organization and its chapters. The different divisions of
INTACH produce enlightening works relating to architectural
conservation, documentation, natural heritage, art and
material heritage, community and crafts, cultural events,
heritage awareness for children and youth and more. The
present compilation is a reflection of the range of this work and
showcases the intellect and research with which different wings
of the organization work, on conserving our precious heritage
and bringing it to the attention of stakeholders, government
bodies and the different sectors of academia, professionals
in related fields, opinion makers and the general public.
We hope this will be a useful brochure for your perusal
and reference. We will keep adding to this collection as our
work is ongoing and dynamic. A library is a treasure trove of
extraordinary knowledge and wonder for the curious and
searching mind.
Hopefully some of these books will find a place in yours…..

Bangalore, As It Was
The publication titled ‘Bangalore as it was:
The grand city of Karnataka’ from the INTACH
archives is an effort to make the archival
repository accessible to wider public. The
Bangalore listing, done in the 1980’s with neat
cursive handwriting, comprises 115 buildings
of various typologies including civic buildings,
churches, temples, hospitals, schools, hotels,
clubs, offices, residences etc. with most dating
back to the 19th and early 20th century. The
residential buildings of bungalow typology are
quite notable with lavish gardens and elaborate
ornamentations combining European and
Indian architectural elements. The book, through
handwritten descriptions and photographs,
highlights the architectural splendors of the
Grand city of Karnataka, something completely
different from its modern title as the
‘IT (Information technology) city’. Hope, the
readers will find the book useful and enjoyable.

Closed Resource Cycle:

Demonstrator for Recycling STP
Water, Delhi
Like many cities NCT Delhi faces an uncertain
water future. Rainfall has become variable,
river waters are contested by upper riparians,
water tables have plummeted while demand
is set to rise. The necessity of recycling treated
wastewater can no longer be avoided or
postponed. Wastewater is a resource which
cannot be limitlessly thrown back into
natural receptacles and allowed to overwhelm
natural systems. However, even if the treated
wastewater meets drinking water standards,
citizens are averse to use it. On the other hand,
in the case of Hauz Khas, it is noted that aquifer
water, which is receiving soil filtered treated
wastewater, and is of near drinking water class,
is readily picked up by surrounding colonies as
it is now groundwater for them. Based on this
understanding INTACH has conceived using
the Narela STP effluent to fill six lakes in
Narela and Tikri Khurd in order to recharge
the depleted aquifers in that area and make
use of recycled water.

City Biodivesity Index –

Case Study of Delhi
In a rapidly urbanising world, biodiversity is
increasingly under threat. Half of the world’s
population lives today in urban centers and
the interaction between biological diversity
and humans occurs today, mainly in the cities
and as a consequence of urban lifestyle.
Urban biodiversity responds to a combination
of biogeographic and anthropogenic factors,
where the anthropogenic activities have a
stronger impact.
The City Biodiversity Index (CBI) is one of
the tools that enable city administrators to
manage and measure their biodiversity.
The CBI assessment of NCT Delhi was
undertaken as a study to benchmark the
status of biodiversity and its management.
According to the Secretariat for the Convention
on Biological Diversity, some of the benefits
that cities derived from the application of the
index include:
a) process facilitated capacity-building in
biodiversity conservation,
b) the indicators also function as biodiversity
conservation guidelines, and
c) assistance in setting priorities for
conservation actions and budget allocation
through quantitative scoring.
This study will, thus, provide insights into
the areas to prioritise biodiversity conservation
in Delhi.

Traditional Seed Bank Manual

Seeds are one of the most important natural
heritage we have. If lost, native seeds are lost
forever. These are our living heritage, which
means to conserve native seeds, it not only
needs to be conserved but also grown and
multiplied. Over thousands of years, traditional
agriculturists have selected and saved seed
from plants that expressed a diversity of traits
of interest to them or their communities.
Agro biodiversity conservation is required to
ensure food security. Seed banks are the self
reliant option in crop production, in the face
of mounting challenges posed by climate
change. This manual presents guidelines on
establishment and operation of seed banks;
collection, preservation and multiplication of
native seeds and creating awareness regarding
native seed heritage of the region.

that guarantees well-being, not just as
outlined in SDG 3, but referenced in other
SDGs as well. It is an important issue for the
conservation community and those engaged
in the preservation of all aspects of cultural
heritage, to consider best practice, methods and
strategies of how this may be achieved in such
diverse areas as urbanism, water conservation,
craft, sustainability, regeneration, parks and
green-lands among countless others. A call for
abstracts on the theme of ‘Heritage and Well-
being’ was announced in January 2020. After
a short-listing process from over 90 abstracts,
this volume was compiled on the basis of eleven
interesting ideas of ‘Heritage and well-being’.

Radar Report and City Profile – Bhopal

The ‘INTACH Cities for Culture’ initiative developed
upon the Agenda 21 for Culture, its Nine Commitments and
their Action Points has successfully completed one of its
important phases with the compilation of the first Radar report.
In order to provide achievable and measurable international
guidelines and standards, the UCLG has conceived nine
‘Commitments’ to provide guidance, for the work of the
local governments, linked to Agenda 21 for Culture.
These commitments in the report relate to the cultural
quotient of the city of Bhopal with various facets of education,
environment, economy, public spaces, governance etc. and
aim to promote processes of self-evaluation. This will help in
better fulfilment and more effective implementation of public
policies and strategies. Under the guidance and leadership of
M.M. Upadhyay, Convenor, Bhopal Chapter the first phase
of this project is now complete. As an outcome, a Bhopal City
Profile and a Radar Report (contextual analysis of cultural
quotient for the city of Bhopal) has been completed.

Kashi Chitran:
Living Heritage of Varanasi
Varanasi, one of the most ancient cities of the world, is a precious
repository of cultural heritage. It is an amalgamation of spiritual
and secular influences resulting from continuous historical events
and settlements, carrying with it both intangible and tangible
properties, social contracts and related norms of knowledge,
traditions and customs. Kashi, Banaras or Varanasi assumes
a complex identity stemming from the collective memory
of generations of communities settled here, and the multi-
dimensional cultural constructs accommodated by the city
over the ages. This bilingual publication encompasses a
mapping of the city by the Intangible Cultural Heritage division
of INTACH, with an aim to unravel the complex and contoured Ras-Ras Banaras –
elements of city life, both historic and contemporary, attaching A Virtual Experiential

INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

Oral Traditions, Continuities

and Transformations in
Northeast India and Beyond
Northeast India is home to many distinct
communities and is an area of incredible
ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity.
This book explores the shared cultural
heritage among the highland and river
valley communities of Northeast India and
mainland South East Asia, including South
China, through oral traditions. It looks at
these shared cultural traditions and suggests
new ways of understanding and interpreting
the heritage of Northeast India. Oral traditions
often bring forward an unexpected twist in
understanding historical and cultural links,
and this volume explores this using local
knowledge and innovative engagements with
oral traditions in multiple ways, from folklore
and language to performative traditions.
The essays in this volume examine how
communities build new meanings from old
traditions, often as a recognition of the tension
between conservation and creation, between
individual interpretation and social consensus.
They offer interesting parallels on how oral
traditions behave in different socio-economic
contexts, and also examine how oral traditions
and memory interact with the digital world’s
penetration in remote areas.
This volume will be useful for scholars and
researchers of Northeast India, sociology,
sociology of culture, cultural studies, ethnic
studies, anthropology, folkloristics, and
political sociology.

Haryana:
Cultural Heritage Guide
This Guide to the cultural heritage of Haryana
is an important resource on the unprotected
heritage of Haryana. The first section of the
guide provides an overview of Haryana’s
natural, archaeological, architectural and
cultural resources with articles that focus
on the State’s geographical transformations,
political history, cultural changes and
chronological evolution of architectural types.
The main section of the guide presents details
of each district, its history and indigenous
characteristics along with major heritage
landmarks. This section is heavily supported
by maps and drawings and serves as a useful
reference for each district. The heritage walks
identified in the few select towns, within each
district, showcase the major heritage precincts
that are the only collective remains from the past,
besides the numerous isolated monuments listed
in this book.
The book is a first attempt at a chronological
and geographical mapping of Haryana’s rich
cultural heritage. The author is Shikha Jain, an
architectural and heritage management expert
and the State Convenor, INTACH Haryana and
Bhawna Dandona, a conservation architect.
