Exercises in Phonetics

This document provides a series of exercises in phonetic transcription and analysis. Exercise 1 asks the reader to match words to phonetic transcriptions. Exercise 2 asks the reader to match words with their phonetic transcriptions. Exercise 3 asks the reader to identify which word is represented by a given phonetic transcription. The exercises continue exploring phonetic concepts through matching words, sounds, accents, and analyzing tongue twisters.

EXERCISES IN PHONETICS

This link will provide you with the examples of transcription and help you learn how to
transcribe sounds and words.
Exercise 1
Which transcription represents the words?
1. fleece c./fli:s/

2. load a./ lo:d/

3. case b./keis/

Exercise 2
Match each of the following words with its transcription.
1. keys -D a. /kyuz/
2. cares -C b. /karz/
3. cues -A c. / kerz/
4. cars -B d. /ki:z/
Exercise 3
The transcription /p^r/ represents the word: D
a. pair b. peer c. pear d. purr

Exercise 4
Consider the following data. What phonetic consistency do you see in the boldfaced negative
prefixes? Why do you think it happens?
inaccurate impossible
indirect imbalance
incomplete impatient
intolerable impartial
inept important

The prefixes “im-” and “in-” allows for a smooth pronunciation of the labial sounds for
each of the two prefix catagories. If the prefixes from the “im-” words were to be switched
with the “in-” root words in the list, the word pronunciation would not be smooth.

Exercise 5
Watch this clip and answer the following questions:
1. What is the profession of the man? The man is an acting tutor.
2. What three aspects of accent does he identify? He identifies vowel sounds, consonants,
and cadence/melody.

3. What diphthong does he mention? He mentions the “I” diphthong.

4. How does he describe Irish cadence? Irish cadence is softer and strung together, and he
also says that Irish is lyrical because the melody goes from high to low (up and down).

Exercise 6
Watch the commercials promoting the language learning and explain the pronunciation problem
of the character. What sounds are involved? How would you try to address the phonetic
problem?
The German coast guard obviously has a problem pronouncing the sounds “s” and “-th”. Since
he is German and it is his native tongue, he has trouble with English vocalization because
German and English are different.

Exercise 7
Listen to the link where Victor, a linguistics student, tells about his skill at imitating different
accents. Then listen to some accents Victor performs (the links pop up right there.)
Pick up two accents (you have a choice of Standard British, Australian, Indian, and some more.)
Compare them pointing out the differences in vowels (at least two differences); consonants (at
least two differences) and intonation.
The British accent

Exercise 8
This link is a clip from the film “My Fair Lady.” First find the information about the plot of the
film and briefly summarize it in one paragraph. Then watch the clip and explain what sound/s the
main character is working on.

A British linguist makes a bet with one of his friends. The bet involves turning a regular
working girl into a well mannered lady that can speak elegantly. The British linguist ends up
falling in love with his student. She is working on her “a” sounds, ex: rain, plain and Spain.

Exercise 9
Tongue-twisters exist in many languages; we become familiar with the ones in our native
language in childhood. Do they have any value besides being fun? Name three of them that you
know (you can use the first line). What is the combination of sounds that makes them difficult to
pronounce fast?
1. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
2. Of course a horse, a horse of course.
3. Zach the Zombie boy is zip zapping by the zebra shop.
Tongue twisters are difficult to pronounce because of the repetitive sound in the first letter of
each word.

Exercise 10
Research the link of Lexicon Branding and pick up three (or more) facts about the symbolism
of phonemes.
Using the strategies presented on this website, create appealing brand names for two
different products of your choice (you can pick up anything, from a beverage to a car.)
Explain your choice.

1. Illumin-Ease: This product is a new kind of pills that will enhance memory
preservation. There are always those moments when you blank out and can’t
remember what you were about to do, so with Illumin-Ease you can easily pop the pill
and rest assured that you will remember. Illumin- was the first choice in the brand
name, and it derived from the word “illuminate” because illuminate makes one think
of brightness or clearer (thoughts or memory in this case). Ease was the second word
chosen because ease seems to draw a sense of relaxation.
2. Vitaserene- Vita comes from the word vitamin, and serene means tranquility. With
Vitaserene you can calm down any skin irritations with the simple application of the
Vitaserene lotion. Vitaserene is made with all natural herbal vitamins that help ease
skin irritations due to sun damage, rash, or allergic reactions. With the word serene in
the name of the product, one instantly thinks of a lotion or crème that will calm down
your skin.
