Project #3 Reflective Memo

I am writing this memo to reflect on my third project in your Professional and Technical Communication
class (English 2210).
I found this project to be quite a difficult one to do. To be able to find a solution to a community issue is
not as easy as it sounds. I have never done anything like this in the past. After this project I can now say
confidently that I may be able to solve community problems in the future. For this project I used a
problem at University of New Mexico that I have seen since attending. The problem I chose was the
issue with security at UNM. While attending UNM I have not seen a single member of the UNM Police
force. The change I wanted to seek was simply having more members of the UNM Police force and
having those members operate with twenty-four-hour surveillance. My audience was fellow students,
faculty, and families of those at UNM.
The first Student Learning Outcome (SLO) I accomplished during the process of completion for Project
#3 was Project Planning. Before starting the project, I began with learning how to effectively compose a
proposal letter, read chapter 9 in Technical Communication Today, and researched crime rates in
Albuquerque and as well as how often crimes occurred around UNM. I also researched the position and
pay of the officers in the UNM Police Department. I thought writing a proposal letter would not be that
difficult, but I was wrong. I had to not only make a proposal and hope that someone would fix the issue,
but I also had offer solutions that I had come up with and offer ways to fund and implement them.
Unfortunately, this is not an easy problem to fix. Hopefully my proposal had enough in it to make an
enticing proposal with solution to the problem at hand.

The second SLO I accomplished was Written Communication. After doing research in crime rates in
Albuquerque and the positions and pay of the officers in the UNM Police Department. This helped me be
able to write my proposal letter in a way that would make my audience almost feel the need to go along
with my request for change. To be able to write my letter concisely for a request to take action to solve a
problem in the community of UNM allowed me to make my proposal more effective.

The third SLO I accomplished was Reviewing and Editing. This was accomplished by the help of my
roommates by having their insightful input I was able to edit my proposal letter more effectively. This
was able to help me have an outer perspective in my letter and helped some of my ideas be more
realistically that would end up make my letter more effective. Having another person review and edit a
proposal letter is extremely crucial to achieve as much effectiveness as possible.

The tactics used to accomplish the Student Learning Outcomes were not just useful for that. They were
also useful in helping me compose a well-structured, appealing, organized, and effective proposal letter
that not only addressed problems at UNM but expressed the desired outcome.
