PLATE TECTONICS: Plate Boundaries: A Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 10 Science

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for a 10th grade science class on plate tectonics and plate boundaries. The lesson plan outlines objectives to describe plate movement causes and identify plate boundary types and characteristics. Students will manipulate clay models to simulate different plate boundary types - convergent, divergent, and transform. Groups will create a Venn diagram comparing the three boundary types and present their work. Through interactive modeling, the lesson aims to demonstrate how plate tectectonics and boundaries shape Earth's surface features.

relationship among the locations of volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and
mountain ranges.
B. Learning Competency: Describe the possible causes of plate movement.
C. Learning Objectives: In this lesson, the students will be able to
 identify the causes of movement of crust;

B. Recall
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
In order for us to know if you really remember and
understood our topic last meeting, we will be having
a game called “4 pics, 1 word” All you need is to
identify what the images depicts.

So are you ready?

Yes sir!

Expected Answers:
1. Earthquake
2. Pangea
3. Crust
4. Fault
5. Volcano
C. Motivation
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

All right! Before we proceed to our new topic, I want

you to look outside, what did you notice to the land
formations, are they plain and even?

No Sir!

What do you call those elevated portion of earth’s

crust? Mountain, Volcano, Hill

What do you, how think they are formed?

Probably, its already formed when the earth is
created long before…..

(Answers may vary)

All right, let us see! To find out what causes those
formation and other changes in earths crust we will
be discovering today, so sit back, buckled-up and
enjoy todays activity as we dig deeper the earth’s
crust.

D. Lesson Proper
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Today, we will be found out how our landforms are

created, the different features and causes of
movements under the lesson of Plate Boundaries.

Please read our objectives for today.

At the end of this lesson, I can:

 identify the causes of
movement of crust;
 describe types and
characteristic of plate
boundaries.;
 manipulate the different
models of plate boundaries.
ACTIVITY

At this time the class will be divided into 4 groups

and each group should have a leader and secretary.

I have prepared 4 bars of clay here, and a toy house

and portable cooler. All team will be provided these
materials, kindly proceed to your groups.
Yes, Sir!
Are you all set?

All you need is to follow the instructions that I am

giving and perform it collaboratively with the group.

First Clay Model: Convergent Boundary (Students are in their groups doing the activity)
 Make two equal slabs of clay
 Place them together on the table and align
them with the distance of 3 inches. I.
 Now, gradually bring them closer and let
them collide. Clay 1 Clay 2
 Observe what happened to the clay
 Secretary kindly take note the groups
observations.
 Ok, let’s try another, but this time one clay Clay 1 Clay 2
must be thinner than the other one. Before (Thin) (Thick)
we proceed, let’s put your thinner slab of clay
in the cooler for 1 minute.
 Get your clays and go back to your group and
perform the previous steps and observe what II.
happened.

Second Clay Model: Divergent Boundary

 Make a wide slab of clay, make a slice
pattern on the center but don’t cut entirely.
 Place the toy house above it
 Pull the clay from different direction
 Observe what happened to the clay and the
toy house.
 Secretary kindly take note the groups III.
observations.

Third Clay Model: Transform Boundary

 Make thick two slabs of clay
 Place them together and stick one side of it
with another
 Observe what happened to the clay ad the
toy house when you pull them from different
direction.

ANALYSIS
Create a Venn Diagram about the types of
boundaries. The organizer should also address the
following questions:
1. What are the three types of boundaries?
2. What are their physical characteristics?
3. What could happen to the objects above it?

Characteristics
You will be given 10 minutes to create your graphic
organizer. You will be graded through these criteria.
.
•ORGANIZATION- 10 PTS
The organizer is well organized. The order and
structure of information is compelling and flows
smoothly.

•CONTENT - 10 PTS
Thorough and insightful understanding
of content.

•CREATIVITY- 5 PTS
Enthusiastically uses materials and ideas for
enhancement.

•IDEAS- 5 PTS
Insightful and well-considered ideas making multiple
connections. The highest score to achieve is 30
points.

After the allotted time of 10 minutes, place your

group’s work on the board. Choose one
representative to discuss the output. Each group will
be given 3 mins. to present your output. Good luck!
ABSTRACTION
What an astonishing performance you did for this
activity. For that, let us give ourselves 10 big claps!

Your activities depict the concepts of Plate Tectonics

and the types of boundaries.

In plate tectonics, Earth’s outermost layer, or

lithosphere—made up of the crust and upper mantle
—is broken into large rocky plates. These plates lie
on top of a partially molten layer of rock called the
asthenosphere. Due to the convection of the
asthenosphere and lithosphere, the plates move
relative to each other at different rates, from two to
15 centimeters (one to six inches) per year.

In some ways, Earth resembles a giant jigsaw

puzzle. That is because its outer surface is
composed of about 20 tectonic plates, enormous
sections of Earth’s crust that roughly fit together and
meet at places called plate boundaries.

Based on your activity that demonstrates

different types of plate boundaries;

CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY—such as the

one between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate
—forms towering mountain ranges, like the
Himalaya, as Earth’s crust is crumpled and pushed
upward. In some cases, however, a convergent plate
boundary can result in one tectonic plate diving
underneath another. This process, called
“subduction,” involves an older, denser tectonic plate
being forced deep into the planet underneath a
younger, less-dense tectonic plate.

A DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY occurs when

two tectonic plates move away from each other, it
often forms a mountain chain known as a ridge. This
feature forms as magma escapes into the space
between the spreading tectonic plates.

A TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY occurs when

two plates slide past each other, horizontally.
APPLICATION

Plate boundaries are important because they are

often associated with earthquakes and volcanoes.
When Earth’s tectonic plates grind past one another,
enormous amounts of energy can be released in the
form of earthquakes. Volcanoes are also often found
near plate boundaries because molten rock from
deep within Earth—called magma—can travel
upward at these intersections between plates.

This interaction of tectonic plates is responsible for

many different geological formations such as the
Himalaya Mountain range in Asia, the East African
Rift, and the San Andreas Fault in California, United
States.

Notable Plate Boundary Sites:

CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY—between the

Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate forms towering
mountain ranges, like the Himalaya.

DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY- Mid-Atlantic

Ridge, an undersea chain of mountains that formed
as two pairs of tectonic plates spread apart

TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY- A well-known

transform plate boundary is the San Andreas Fault,
which is responsible for many of California’s
earthquakes.
A single tectonic plate can have multiple types of
plate boundaries with the other plates that surround
it. For instance, the Pacific Plate, one of Earth’s
largest tectonic plates, includes convergent,
divergent, and transform plate boundaries.

IV. Agreement/Assignment
Create a preparedness plan on what things we need to before, during and after the
earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Submit it next meeting.
