Solar PV Design Problem

The residential house has a daily energy consumption of 17,360 Wh. To power the house using solar, the following system sizes are required: 1) 61 110Wp PV modules totalling 6,637.65Wp to produce 22,568Wh per day after losses. 2) A 4,700W inverter to handle the house load of 3,580W while allowing for 30% more capacity. 3) 228 12V lead-acid batteries totalling 11,346.4Ah of storage to provide 4 days of autonomy. 4) A 460A charge controller to handle the short circuit current of the 61 PV modules.

A residential house is powered by 12𝑉𝑑𝑐 , 110𝑊𝑝 PV array with the following specifications:

𝑉𝑚 = 16.8𝑉𝑑𝑐 , 𝐼𝑚 = 6.6𝐴, 𝑉𝑜𝑐 = 20.8𝐴, 𝐼𝑠𝑐 = 7.5𝐴

And the daily energy consumption is tabulated as shown in Table 4d
Table 4d: Daily energy Consumption
S/N LOADs Qty Watt Hours/day

1 Ceiling Fan 5 60 8

2 Coffee maker 1 600 0.5

3 Electric Pressing Iron 1 1000 0.8

4 Radio 1 80 2

5 Computer and Accessories 1 100 2

6 Refrigerator 1 200 12

7 TV 2 100 10

8 Washing machine 1 200 0.5

9 Lightings 15 60 10

Determine the appropriate sizing for the following:

(i) PV module
(ii) Inverter
(iii) Battery
(iv) Charge Controller
(Assumptions: the battery is rated 200Ah, 12V with 4 days of autonomy and the system
nominal voltage is 48V. There should be an allowance of 30% for the inverter and allowance
of 30% for the PV.) (6mks)
SOLUTION

Table 1: Daily energy Consumption

S/N LOADs Qty Watt Hours/day Total
Wh/day

1 Ceiling Fan 5 60 8 2400

2 Coffee maker 1 600 0.5 300

3 Electric Pressing Iron 1 1000 0.8 800

4 Radio 1 80 2 160

5 Computer and Accessories 1 100 2 200

6 Refrigerator 1 200 12 2400

7 TV 2 100 10 2000

8 Washing machine 1 200 0.5 100

9 Lightings 15 60 10 9000

3580W 17360Wh/day

Total energy consumed in Wh/day = 17360

(i) PV Sizing:

The total energy the PV must produce to cater for the load = 17360×1.3=22568Wh/day
22568
Total Wp of the PV = (Total energy produced by PV ÷ 3.4) = 3.4

Power in Wp = 6,637.65Wp
6637.65
The number of panels = (power in Wp ÷ PVrating) = = 61 𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑠
110

(ii) Inverter Sizing:

Total appliance rating in Watts = 3580W

Inverter rating = total appliance ratings in Watt ×inverter allowance

= 3580 × 1.3 = 4654W≈ 4700𝑊

Thus, the inverter should be rated 4700W or higher.
(iii) Battery sizing:

Battery capacity = (total consumption in Wh/day×number of days of autonomous)÷

(𝑑𝑒𝑒𝑝 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 × 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 × 𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒)
17360×4
𝐵𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 = = 11346.4𝐴ℎ
0.85×0.6×12

Total number of batteries in parallel = 𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 ÷ 𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔

11346,4
= = 56.73 ≈ 57 𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑙
200

𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 48

𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 = = =4
𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 12

Total racked batteries = (series)×(parallel) = 4×57= 228 batteries

(iv) Charge Controller Sizing:

Charge controller rating = number of panels × short-circuit current rating of the PV

= 61 × 7.5 = 457.5𝐴
Thus, the controller should rated 460A at 12V or higher.
