Ramayanam Part 1
PART 1
Swami’s Pearls on Ramayana
“Rama Navami, the birth of Sri Rama is celebrated in all
lands. Rama had deed, word and thought, body, speech and
mind, ever pure and totally free from blemish. Really
speaking, one ought to revere the story of Rama as a
profound allegory. Every act and actor in that story attracts
attention and gets imprinted on the memory because the
allegory is personal to each of us... It is often said that Rama
followed dharma at all times. This is not the correct way of
describing him. He did not follow dharma, he was dharma.
What he thought, spoke, and did was dharma and
is dharma forever.”
Sathya Sai Baba, 18th April 1986
The name Rama is the essence of the Vedas; the story of Rama is an ocean of milk,
pure and potent. It can be asserted that no poem of equal grandeur and beauty has
emerged from other languages or from other countries until this very day, and it has
provided inspiration to the poetic imagination of every language and country. It is the
greatest treasure inherited by their good fortune by every Indian.
Ratnakhara became Valmiki after intense tapas - japa on Lord Raama’s
name that was bestowed to him by the Saptarishis. Later he wrote
Ramayana…during Ramarajya.

As the princes grew up further,
the king decided to send them to
the ashram (hermitage) of Sage
Vasishtha for all-round education
befitting the then princes. There
they were to live as continents
(brahmacharis) till a certain age
of years and attain knowledge at
the feet of the great guru.
The princes were soon informed
that they were to go to the
hermitage of the royal priest. So,
they prepared themselves for
that. Soon, they got their hair
shorn and dressed up as
continents in coarse clothes of
saffron colour.
