NLUO
The National Law University Odisha (NLUO) is an exciting new development in the field of legal
education. It was established by Act 4 of 2008 and started its Academic Activities from the year 2009. In a
span of eleven years, the University has made a name for itself by earning laurels with excellent
performance of its students in various moot courts, literary debating competition & other co-curricular
activities. Our faculty research output has always been of a very high standard. Faculty publications in
several top-tier international publications bespeak about their subject expertise and scholarship. The
student community's engagement with co-curricular activities has yielded remarkable results, including
consistent high performance in moot court competitions and active participation in prestigious national and
international conferences and seminars. Our rigorous academic discipline coupled with friendly learning
environment provides a platform to the students to realize their true potential and develop in their fields of
interest and passion.
The University has received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 12(b)
of the UGC Act 1956, and has been receiving grants under the 12th Plan. The University's degrees are duly
recognized by the Bar Council of India. It is also an associate member of the UGC-INFLIBNET, and a
participant in the National Knowledge Network under the Ministry of Information Technology and
Communication, Government of India. The University was accredited with 'A' Grade by National
Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the year 2016. National Law University Odisha, Cuttack
(NLU Odisha) has been ranked at number 6 under the ‘Top 10 Emerging Colleges’ (Law) category in the
India Today’s Best Colleges Ranking of 2021. This category is for Highest-scoring colleges among those set
up in or after 2000. Additionally, NLU Odisha has secured number 8 position in the Top 10 Government
Law Colleges, and in overall Top 10 Law Colleges NLU Odisha is ranked at no. 9. NIRF Ranking for 2021
stands National Law University Odisha at Eighteenth rank amongst over all Category of Law Colleges of
the country and Tenth among NLUs. NLUO has its own campus spread over 50 acres near Naraj at the
western extreme of historical city of Cuttack. The area is known for its scenic beauty.

committed teachers. The teachers at NLUO are mostly alumni of the leading National Law Universities in
India and reputed law schools aboard. They come from diverse background, having served in the office of
the Chief Justice of India, practiced in law at Bar, served in civil society organisations, served in Indian
Police Service and have headed various reputed educational institutions in the past. Our faculty is our pride
and we are committed to invest in scholarship of our faculty so that you get the best in the country.
4. We provide state-of-art infrastructure like fully equipped library, 24 x 7 wi-fi enabled campus, audio-
visual enabled class rooms and moot court hall, Seminar-cum-Convention Hall, Amphitheatre, Conference
Hall, Gymnasium, Sports Complex, single bedded hostel rooms etc. to facilitate the smooth and enjoyable
learning process.
5. To fulfil our social commitment, we organize legal aid camps in the villages across the State of Odisha in
collaboration with the United Nations Development Program, High Court of Orissa and the District
Judiciary. These programs are organized, coordinated entirely by the student body under the supervision of
law professors. This enables the students to learn the application of law in society and connect it with the
principles of law taught in the classroom.
Academic Block
6. To multiply the effect of legal scholarship, we frequently organize lecture series/ seminars/ conferences/
workshops on diverse aspects of law and allied subjects by inviting scholars, practitioners, lawyers, judges,
members of media who share their critical perspectives and experiences in the fields of law, politics,
judiciary, economic affairs, international affairs, history and culture. This provides a platform for open
dialogue between scholars, faculty and students and generates a healthy environment of cross-sectoral
learning.
7. NLUO provides an excellent opportunity to students to hone their mooting skills that include drafting
memoranda and presenting arguments. Students are also well supported to travel nationally and
internationally to represent the university in prestigious moot court competitions. The University has its
own state-of-art moot court room facility.
8. To keep a close check on our quality standards, we conduct periodic revision of academic curriculum,
course syllabus, teaching pedagogy and learning skills to meet the changing needs of legal education based
on the student feedback, peer review process, professional and industrial inputs.
Research and innovation is the bedrock of any progressive institution. NLUO has adopted this principle
since its establishment. In pursuit of this commitment, we have invested in the establishment of research
centres to develop legal scholarship in the selected branches of law. United Nations organisations like
UNDP and UNICEF have been actively supporting our research endeavours. University's Centre for Child
Right (CCR) in collaboration with UNICEF is a testimony to this partnership.
The Centre for Public Health Law organized 1st NLUO-PHFI Public Health Law National Moot Court
Competition between 24th – 27th June 2021, which focused on the issue of compulsory vaccination and
immunity to vaccine developers and manufacturers along with ancillary issues of federalism in the context
of Public Health. The final rounds were followed by a grand valedictory ceremony which was graced by
Hon’ble Justice Mr Sanjeeb Panigrahi, Judge, Orissa High Court as the Chief Guest and Dr. K Srinath
Reddy, President, Public Health Foundation of India as Guest of Honor.
NLU Odisha organized the Third Smt. Sailabala Pujari, Memorial Public Lecture on “Law, Language and
Gender” by Hon’ble Ms. Justice (Retd.) Prabha Sridevan was organised on January 29, 2021 in virtual Mode.
The University organised the Distinguished Lecture on "Constitutional Morality, Populist Reality" by Dr.
Ajay Gudavarthy, Associate Professor, Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
on 29th January 2021.
The University in collaboration with Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) jointly organised “International
Law Lecture Series” from 10th Feb to 25th Feb 2021. The program was graced by eminent personalities like
Maskit Bendel, ACRI, Israel, Damir Gainutdinov, Agora, Russia, Diego Morales and Erika Schimdhuber Pena, CELs,
Argentina, Lucia Ramirez, Dejusticia, Bogota, Mate Szabo, HCLU, Hungary.
The Conference on “Indian Justice Report 2020” was conducted in collaboration with India Justice Report
team organised a conference dated 24th July, 2021. The conference sought to present Odisha-specific insights
to the honourable custodians of the four pillars of the formal justice system i.e. judiciary, police, prisons and
legal aid. Various stakeholders from Judiciary, Prison and Police Departments, and Civil society
Organisations marked their presence and shared their valuable insights on the report that highlighted on
contemporary issues of justice delivery mechanisms. The keynote address was given by Hon’ble Dr. Justice
S. Muralidhar, Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, wherein he emphasised on the role of bar in the judicial
system. Senior judges of Orissa High Court , Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo, Hon'ble Mr. Justice
Bibhu Prasad Routray and Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra shared their perspectives on the report
during various sessions. Other participants of the conference included Ms. Maja Daruwala, Chief Editor,
India Justice Report, Mr. Surya Prakash BS, Fellow and Programme Director at DAKSH, Ms. Madhurima
Dhanuka, Programme Head, Prison Reforms Programme, CHRI, Shri Abhay, IPS Director General of Police,
Odisha, and Shri Santosh Kumar Upadhyay, IPS Director General of Prisons and Director of Correctional Services,
Odisha.
Beyond Academics
We promote leadership skills and the wholesome life experience of our students by encouraging them to
take part in various literary, debating, cultural, entrepreneurial and recreational activities.
The University has also introduced an Informal Discussion Group (IDG) to promote discussions and debate
among students on one hand and between students & visiting dignitaries on general social and political
issues on the other hand.
NLUO is recognized as one of the chapters of IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal
Education) Program helping students in preparation of CLAT exam. NLUO chapter of IDIA also helps
visually challenged and other students in need of support.
Currently Sporting & Cultural activities are minimal or reduced to a great extent due to the COVID
restrictions but in general, students of NLUO bag prestigious awards round the year. As an exception,
NLUO has allowed its students to take full charge of the Hostel Mess; resulting which the students are able
to run the mess and get food of their choice. The in-campus Multy-Gym is another attraction for the
students to keep their mind and body in good shape duly supported with a Wellness Center.

1. 2nd GMU-CIArb International Maritime Arbitration Moot Court Competition 2021: Punyashlok Panda,
Karshana Agarwal, and Srutee Priyadarshini – Best Memorial Award. Additionally, Punyashlok Panda
was awarded the citation of 2nd best Researcher in the competition.

2. The refundable deposits will be refunded only after successful completion of the course. The amount will
not be refunded in case of cancellation of candidature by the student or otherwise during the tenure of the
course.
Scholarship
The National Law University Odisha offers scholarships to deserving and needy undergraduate students
from second year onwards keeping in view their financial status, need and their academic achievement(s).
The University also makes every effort to announce scholarships offered by outside agencies which may be
of interest to our students.
Earning While Learning
Earning while learning' is a student aid scheme instituted by NLUO to help students tide over financial
insufficiency. Under this Scheme University allows students to serve in the library or work on the research
projects undertaken by the University from time to time in lieu of remuneration to be decided by the
University.
