2 Introduction to AISG ALDs

The Antenna Interface Standards Group (AISG) is an international consortium formed by
collaboration between communication infrastructure manufacturers and network
operators with the purpose of maintaining and developing a standard for digital remote
control and monitoring of antenna line devices (ALDs) in the wireless industry. So far, the
consortium has released two versions of its standard, AISG1.1 and AISG2.0.

 AISG1.1: Introduced in 2004, it is designed to enable the RETs (RCUs and their
control devices or software) of different vendors to be interoperable and to achieve
remote control of RCU devices.

 AISG2.0: Developed based on 3GPP standards in 2006, it corrects some errors in

AISG1.1 and supports TMAs in addition to RETs. Besides, it takes into account the
scalability of the protocol itself.

The ALD family includes a wide range of devices, such as RET, TMA, NSBT/ASBT, and
AAU.

This section introduces the main ALDs used in ZTE’s LTE FDD eNodeBs.

2.1.1 AISG Ports on RRU/RSU

The AISG ports on different RRUs or RSUs are different. Figure 2-1 to Figure 2-3
illustrates the AISG ports on R8862A, R8882, and RSU82. For other RRUs and RSUs,
refer to their respective hardware manual.

2.1.2 AISG Cable

The AISG cables are special cables used to connect an AISG device with a RRU for DC
power supply and data transfer.

Due to the difference between the ports on the RRU and the AISG device, a pair of AISG
cables is often used to connect an AISG device to a RRU/RSU.

Currently, four types of AISG cables are available, as shown in Table 2-1.

On the antenna side, as the ports on the AISG devices are the same, cable type 2 in
Table 2-1 is used; while on the RRU/RSU side, as the AISG port differs, the AISG cable
is different. The combinations of the AISG cables are used on the RRU/RSU and antenna
sides are shown in Table 2-2.

As shown in Table 2-1, end B of either AISG cable (the end connecting the AISG device)
is an 8-pin connector. The definitions of the pins on end B of the AISG cable are
described in Table 2-3.

2.1.3 RCU (RET)

The RCU, connecting to an antenna in a mechanical way, is used to adjust the downtilt of
an electrically-adjusted antenna. It has an AISG port, one 8-pin female port, and one
8-pin male port. The 8-pin male port is used to connect one AISG cable, while the 8-pin
female port is used for RCU cascading. Some antennas have built-in RCUs.

Figure 2-4 RCU (RET)

Prior to the installation of one RCU, read its installation manual carefully because the
installation methods of the RCUs of different vendors differ. Incorrect installation may
cause RET calibration to fail. Besides, if the antenna’s downtilt is adjusted manually
during RCU installation, the actual downtilt of the antenna cannot be queried through the
RET. As a result, it is required to perform RET calibration after installation, and if
necessary, adjust the downtilt through the OMC/LMT.

 Tip:

For the list of RETs that have been authenticated by ZTE, refer to A.1.

2.1.4 NSBT and ASBT

An NSBT is the bias tee used on the eNodeB side and it has two functions:

 Providing DC current to an ADTMA or a RET antenna through a feeder.

 Modulating the RS485 signals that are used on the eNodeB side to control the
downtilt of the RET antenna or ADTMA into low-frequency analog signals, and
loading them to the feeder.

Figure 2-7 illustrates one NSBT.

Figure 2-7 NSBT

An ASBT is the bias tee used on the antenna side. It also has two functions:

 Providing DC current to a RCU through an AISG cable.

 Demodulating the RS485 control signals of the RET antenna.

Figure 2-8 illustrates one ASBT.

Figure 2-8 ASBT

The difference between an NSBT and an ASBT lies in their AISG ports: The AISG port of
the NSBT is an 8-pin male connector, while that of the ASBT is an 8-pin female connector,
as shown in Figure 2-9.

3 Application Scenario
Before AISG device commissioning, it is required to connect necessary cables correctly.
For details about the installation of RET antennas, refer to RET Antenna Quick
Installation Guide.

This section describes some common application scenarios of AISG devices. For more
scenarios, refer to GUCLT_DCI_ZTE’s GUCLT Antenna System Solution.

3.1 LTE FDD RRU+RET Antenna

Currently, this scenario can be divided into three sub-scenarios: 2T2R, 2T4R, and 4T4R.
Among them, the RRUs in the 2T2R and 2T4R sub-scenarios are mainly R8862As,
R8862s, and R8882s; and the RRUs in the 4T4R sub-scenario are R8854s.

3.1.1 2T2R

 Near End (The distance between the RRU and the antenna does not exceed 20 m)

Normally, in this scenario, the distance between the RRU and the antenna does not
exceed 20 m. For example, both the RRU and the antenna are installed on the top
of a building. Typical configuration of the antenna system includes RET antennas,
RCU, ALPD, and feeders. If the antenna is installed indoors or on the top of a low
building, the ALPD is not necessary. In this case, one AISG cable is used to connect
the antenna and the RRU.

Figure 3-1 shows the connection of the antenna system in the near end scenario.
Here only one sector is illustrated. The connections of three sectors are similar.

Normally, in this scenario, the RRU is installed at the bottom of a tower or indoors,
while the antenna is installed on the tower. The distance between the RRU and the
antenna exceeds 20 m. Typical configuration of the antenna system includes RET
antennas, RCU, NSBT, ASBT, and feeders. For the purpose of standardization, the
NSBT and the ASBT should be installed on the main channel of the antenna.

 Far End (The distance between the RRU and the antenna exceeds 20 m)

A R8854 can be configured with a built-in NSBT or an external NSBT, and the cable
connections differ in the two cases:

 If the R8854 uses the built-in NSBT, an ASBT is required on the antenna side,
and it must be connected with the feeder from the ANT1 port.

 If the R8854 is not configured with a built-in NSBT, an external NSBT is

needed. Besides, an ASBT is required on the antenna side, and it can be
connected with the feeder from the ANT port (ANT1, ANT2, ANT3 or ANT4) to
which the NSBT is connected.

3.2 LTE FDD RRU+Cascaded RETs

An eNodeB supports the cascading of the RET antennas of several cells. That is to say, it
can control cascaded RET antennas via one cell, as shown in Figure 3-8. In this scenario,
the networking complexity is reduced, but the serial numbers of all the RET antennas
must be recorded.

Currently, one RRU can support at most 12 cascaded RET antennas.

This chapter describes how to configure RET and TMA devices for one RRU. The
method of configuring RET antennas and TMAs for one RSU is similar.

4.1 Configuring RET

This section describes how to configure the RETs and perform RET-related operations.

4.1.1 Querying Antenna Attribute Object

In the creation of an antenna entity, a profile of antenna attributes is associated. As a

result, before creating an antenna entity, ensure the correct antenna profile is present.

ZTE Confidential & Proprietary. © 2022 ZTE CORPORATION. All rights reserved. 16
LTE FDD AISG Antenna Line Device Configuration Guide Internal Use Only▲

By default, 22 profiles of antenna attributes have been created in the EMS system for
common antennas. They can meet the requirements in most cases. If no profile meets
the demand, you should create a new one.

To query the profile of antenna attributes, follow the steps below:

1. In the Configuration Management interface of the NE Management window of the

EMS, expand the middle Configuration Management tree and select Modify Area
under the desired eNodeB. The Managed Element pane displays under the
Configuration Management pane.

2. In the Managed Element pane, double-click Antenna Attribute Object (path:

Device > BTS Auxiliary Peripheral Device > Antenna Service > Antenna
Attribute Object) to open the Antenna Attribute Object-List tab page on the right.

4.1.2 Creating Antenna Entity Objects

Normally, one RET corresponds to one antenna entity object. However, in practice, as it
is difficult for the OMC engineer to obtain the antenna information, the antenna entity
objects are, by default, configured on the principle of two RETs per cell.

To create antenna entity objects, follow the steps below:

1. In the Managed Element pane, double-click Antenna Entity Object (path:

Device > BTS Auxiliary Peripheral Device > Antenna Service > Antenna Entity
Object) to open the Antenna Entity Object-List tab page on the right.

2. In the Antenna Entity Object-List tab page, click on the tool bar to open the
Antenna Entity Object tab page.

Reference Information

In three-cell configuration, six antenna entity objects are often configured in the EMS. For
three 2T2R cells (an antenna installed with a RET), only three objects (AntEntity=1/3/5)
are used and associated with RETs, and the other three objects are reserved; while for
three 2T4R cells (one antenna often installed with two RETs), all the six objects are used
and associated with the RETs.

Example

Suppose the site scenario of one eNodeB is 2T4R, as described in Section 3.1.2. Six
antenna entity objects should be configured for the eNodeB and their numbers are 1, 2, 3,
4, 5, and 6 respectively, their Used antenna attribute is AntProfile=1, and RET device
type is Uni-antenna RET. Among these objects, objects 1 and 2 correspond to the two
RETs of the first antenna; objects 3 and 4 correspond to the two RETs of the second
antenna, and objects 5 and 6 correspond to the two RETs of the third antenna.

Upon configuration, the Antenna Entity Object-List tab page looks like Figure 4-5.

4.1.3 Configuring RF Cables

A RF cable is used to connect the antenna port of a RRU/RSU to an antenna. Each RF

cable should be associated with a different antenna entity object.

RRU connects with two RETs, as shown in Figure 3-4. In this case, two RF cable records
need to be configured for each RRU, one RF cable connecting to the first ANT port and
the other connecting to the fourth ANT port, allowing the RRU to connect to the antenna
entities through the two channels. As a result, six RF cable records need to be configured
for this eNodeB, as shown in Table 4-5.

4.1.4 Configuring AISG Power Outlets

For some RRUs/RSUs (e.g. R8882/RSU82/R8862A/R8862/R8854), their AISG power

outlets are closed by default, which means the AISG devices cannot be scanned. As a
result, it is required to configure their power outlets to provide power supply to the AISG
devices.

Tip:

For some RRUs, such as R8884, as there is not the PowerOutlet Set option in the EMS, it is
not necessary to configure the AISG power outlet parameter and the operations in this
section can be ignored.

Before configuring the AISG power outlets, ensure the following prerequisites are met:

 RRUs/RSUs have been configured.

 The link connection is set up. The connection should not be short-circuited or
open-circuited; otherwise, even after the AISG power outlet is configured, the power
is cut off due to overcurrent protection.

To configure the AISG power outlets, follow the steps below:

supply to the AISG device.

4.1.5 Adding RET

After the antenna entity objects are configured, it is required to associate them with the
actual RET devices, which are added by means of scanning and AISG device creation.

Before adding the RETs, ensure the following conditions are met:

 The antenna entity objects have been configured

 The RETs have been correctly installed.

The adding of RETs involves two main steps: scanning AISG devices and creating RETs,
as described in Section 4.1.5.1 and Section 4.1.5.2 respectively.
