PG Test Procedure For ACC

The document outlines procedures for conducting performance guarantee tests on an air cooled condenser (ACC). Key steps include: 1) Maintaining steady test conditions with less than 2% variation in condensate flow, 3°C variation in inlet air temperature, and 5% variation in initial temperature difference. 2) Measuring parameters like fan motor power, condensate flow, steam quality, and temperatures. 3) Conducting one-hour test runs with readings taken every minute to collect valid data and determine if the ACC meets performance guarantees.

PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE TEST PROCEDURE FOR AIR COOLED CONDENSER

INTRODUCTION
Every effort must be made to conduct the test run/s as close to the guarantee condition as possible.
Steam turbine controls shall be fine tuned prior to test run to minimize fluctuation in steam flow and
turbine exhaust pressure. For a valid test run, the following are applicable.

¾ Condensate mass flow shall not vary by more than 2%

¾ The inlet dry bulb temperature shall not vary by more than 3ºC

¾ The Initial Temperature Difference (ITD= steam temperature at exhaust – air temperature at inlet)
shall not vary more than 5%

¾ The average wind velocity shall be less than or equal to 3 m/s

¾ One minute duration velocity shall not be more than 5 m/s

¾ The ACC shall be in normal operating condition.

Before proceeding to test check shall be made to ensure all instrumentation are in working order.

PRE TEST AGREEMENT

Establish parameters to be used in the calculation of test variables.
¾ Means for maintaining constant test conditions

¾ Location and type of instruments

¾ Operation of air removal equipment

¾ Verify that non-condensable are within design limit

¾ Means to measure fan power measurement and methodology for line losses between point of
measurement and motor terminal

¾ Organization test personnel, data collection and deduction

¾ Allowable deviation from design

¾ Number of test runs

¾ Duration of stabilization between test runs

¾ Frequency of observations

TEST PREPERATION

Contd. on Page - 2
The fans shall be in good working order, rotation in the correct direction at the specified speed and
blade pitch. The average fan power at motor terminal is within +/- 10% of design power at design
conditions. The external heat transfer surface is clean and does not impede airflow or adversely affect heat
transfer.

Î Required measurements
¾ Inlet air temperature inside the plenum

¾ Wind speed

¾ Fan motor power

¾ Condensate flow downstream of the CEP

¾ Steam quality

¾ Make up water flow if applicable

¾ Make up water temperature if applicable

¾ Turbine exhaust pressure

¾ Barometric pressure

Î Recommended Test Modes

The ACC operation shall be consistent with the guarantee condition.

Î Test Starting Criteria

Prior to Starting the test, the following conditions must be satisfied.
¾ Equipment operation and control

¾ Turbine operating condition

¾ All auxiliary equipment status

¾ The plant should be in stable operation for sufficient time

¾ The personnel are in place and ready to record data

Î Test Stopping Criteria

Tests are normally stopped when the coordinator is satisfied that the required data is complete. The
data is checked immediately for completeness.

Î Testing Conditions
Before starting any test run, the steam turbine, ACC and associated equipment shall be operated for
sufficient time to attain steady state operation. Acceptable adjustments may be made to the equipment
and/or operating condition within manufacturers’ guidelines. Switching from automatic to manual control
or adjusting set points should be avoided during test run.

Page 2
Î Duration of Test Runs
Normally duration of one (1) hour is sufficient to collect a valid data set.

Î Number of Readings
¾ Condensate flow – once per minute

¾ Fan motor power – once at the beginning and once at the end

¾ ACC pressure and temperature – at one (1) minute interval

¾ Barometric pressure - once at the beginning and once at the end

¾ Air inlet temperature – at one (1) minute interval

Î Preliminary Test Runs

Preliminary test runs, with recorded readings, serve to determine if the equipment is in suitable
condition for testing, to test instruments and check adequacy of personnel. If such a test run complies with
all requirements, it can be used as an official test run.

Î Measurement of Environmental Effects

Prior to the test, the parties to the test shall inspect the area surrounding the ACC to make aware
that the test results may be affected.

Î Location of Test Points

¾ General – The exact location shall be determined by mutual agreement

¾ Condenser pressure – at the pressure transmitter/s located at the steam duct

¾ Steam pressure – at the temperature transmitter located at the steam duct

¾ Steam quality - this is not a measured value. It can be determined from heat and mass balance
around steam turbine, cycle modeling or turbine expansion line

¾ Atmospheric pressure – a single atmospheric pressure measurement at the test site is sufficient

¾ Inlet air temperature - the measuring point shall be at the downstream of fan discharge (inside
plenum) in the outer half of the fan radius

¾ The wind velocity – measured at least 5m above grade level. This will be extrapolated to the top of
ACC level.

V top of ACC =v measured*(H top of ACC/H measured Height)^0.2

¾ Condensate flow - Measurement of condensate flow at the discharge of CEP shall be made. Any
other discharge to the condensate tank shall also be recorded, if applicable

Fan motor input power - measured at the motor terminal. If not suitable corrections shall be made for
line losses.
