Activity No. 2.2: LET’S BE ACTIVE Directions: Based on your personal experience,
compose an essay on the benefits of indulging to outdoor recreational activities.
Photography is an outdoor activity that I enjoy since, for me, photographs play a
significant part in our lives because they allow us to connect with our history and recall
many memories that might reduce tension. There are other advantages to photography,
such as the ability to chronicle our journey and preserve new and old memories, as well
as the ability to help us discover the beauty in our surroundings. Since it allows me to
forget about my difficulties, photography is the ideal leisure activity for me. Outdoor
sports, in addition to the health benefits of physical activity and nature, are associated
with social benefits such as intra-and interpersonal development for young people,
crime reduction, and active citizenship because they provide unique opportunities within
natural and social environments.

Fishing
Fishing, also called angling, the sport of catching fish, freshwater or saltwater, typically
with rod, line, and hook. Like hunting, fishing originated as a means of providing food for
survival. Fishing as a sport, however, is of considerable antiquity. An Egyptian angling
scene from about 2000 BCE shows figures fishing with rod and line and with nets. A
Chinese account from about the 4th century BCE refers to fishing with a silk line, a hook
made from a needle, and a bamboo rod, with cooked rice as bait. References to fishing
are also found in ancient Greek, Assyrian, Roman, and Jewish writings.
With the advent of the use of copper and bronze, a hook was one of the first tools made
from metal. This was attached to a hand-operated line made of animal or vegetable
material of sufficient strength to hold and land a fish. The practice of attaching the other
end of the line to a rod, at first probably a stick or tree branch, made it possible to fish
from the bank or shore and even to reach over vegetation bordering the water.
For over a thousand years, the fishing rod remained short, not more than a few feet (a
metre or so) in length. The earliest references to a longer, jointed rod are from Roman
times, about the 4th century CE. As with the earliest rods made from streamside
branches, the first longer rods were made of wood, which would continue as the dominant
rod material well into the 19th century.
Methods
The five basic methods of angling are bait fishing, fly-fishing, bait casting, spinning, and
trolling. All are used in both freshwater and saltwater angling.
Bait fishing, also called still fishing or bottom fishing, is certainly the oldest and most
universally used method. In British freshwater fishing it is used to catch what are called
coarse (or rough) fish. These include bream, barb, tench, dace, and other nongame
species. A bait is impaled on the hook, which is “set” by the angler raising the tip of the
rod when the fish swallows it. Common baits in fishing include worms, maggots, small
fish, bread paste, cheese, and small pieces of vegetables and grain. The bait may be
weighted down with what is allied a ledger in Britain and a sinker in the United States,
usually of lead. In this type of fishing, the angler simply holds the rod or lays it down and
waits for the telltale tug of the fish to be transmitted through the line. Bait may also be
fished by suspending it at a chosen depth under a buoyant object attached to the line that
is made of cork or plastic, called a float in Britain and a bobber in the United States. The
angler attempts to suspend the bait at a depth where foraging fish will notice it and in
locations near the natural hiding places of fish—such as sunken weed beds, logs, and
underwater rock formations. The rods used in still fishing both in North America and
Britain are usually 6 to 9 feet (1.8 to 2.7 metres) long, with a fixed-spool reel and
monofilament line of 2- to 25-pound (900- to 11,300-gram) test strength. In North America,
still fishing is usually practiced with conventional bait-casting or spinning tackle.
Freshwater fish taken by this method include bluegills, crappies, perch, carp, and catfish,
as well as bass and walleyes. The most common natural North American baits are worms,
minnows, crayfish, cut-up fish, leeches, and grubs or maggots.
Fishing is a great way to relate to the unknown. It's compelling and surprising that we
always return to places where we've caught something to wait, when there's no reason
to think that anything will ever break surface in the same place twice. But we wait and try
to sense what is under the surface.
HOW TO GET STARTED FISHING IN 10 SIMPLE STEPS
Step 1. Purchase a fishing license
Before you get started fishing, you will need to purchase a fishing license in the state
where you plan to fish. You can even purchase your fishing license online and go fishing
that same day.
Step 2. Learn to identify the fish species that inhabit your state waters.
Learning how to identify the species you catch is a requirement. When you know how to
properly identify the fish you catch, you will be able to accurately refer to any size limits,
bag limits, or other fishing regulations pertaining to a particular species.
Step 3. Locate a good fishing spot.
Use the places to boat and fish map or top family spots list to select your location. If the
location is near you, and you have time stop by the spot in advance of your actual fishing
trip to confirm access points, areas of potential structure, or fish activity, it can be helpful.
Step 4. Assemble your fising gear and tackle.
Keep in mind that you don't need a lot of tackle or gear to get started fishing. Use this
basic list of fishing essentials for beginners:
Rod and reel combo
Small tackle box with divided trays
Spool of monofilament fishing line (6- or 8-pound test for freshwater fishing)
Round plastic bobbers
Split shot weights
Assortment of hooks in various sizes (size 2 for small bait to size 3/0 for bigger bait)
Pliers (to remove hooks)
Measuring tape
Scissors (to cut line or leader)
Step 5. Learn and practice a couple of simple fishing knots.
Learn one line joining knot and one lure or rig knot. Two good knots to start with are the
double-uni knot (line joining knot) and the improved clinch knot (for tying your leader to
your fishing hook).
Step 6. Check your state fishing regulations and bring a copy along on your fishing trip.
You will need to know what the fishing laws or regulations are for the species you catch.
Fishing regulations are put into place in order to protect our fish populations and
waterways for future generations to enjoy.
Step 7. Get some live bait.
You can either purchase live bait from a bait or tackle shop or get your own live bait. Live
worms, crickets or minnows are good baits to use for freshwater fishing.
Step 8. Head to your fishing spot and bait your hook.
Since you have already researched good fishing spots in the area, you know exactly
where you want to go to have your first fishing experience. Once you arrive, unload your
gear and bait your hook with the live bait that you brought along. Don't forget to use the
appropriately sized hook for the type of bait you are using.
Step 9. Cast your line our into the water.
If you are using a plastic bobber, you may need to adjust the placement of your bobber
on your fishing line depending on the depth of the water in order to get your bait at the
appropriate position in the water column.
Step 10. Wait for a bite.
If you are fishing with circle hooks, remember that you don't need to jerk your rod upwards
to set the hook, all you have to do it reel. If you are using standard hooks, then you will
need to set the hook by raising your fishing rod into the air quickly. You have your first
fish on the line now, how exciting!
Now that you know how to get started fishing, be sure to learn how to properly release
the fish you catch. You won't want to keep all of the fish you catch, so knowing how to
release your fish so that it has the best chance for survival is very important.

Stress Relief: Ask most anglers why they enjoy spending time in the outdoors and you’re
likely to hear the word “freedom.” Spending a day afield casting for trout on a cool
mountain stream or bobber fishing for bluegills on a pond helps to release us from our
highly stressful, everyday environment. Nothing brings on the sense of being alive and
helps to rebuild our personal reserves like a day spent interacting with nature.
