MAT 5501
MATT EPOXIDE SEALING PAINT

1. Scope

A. This specification covers the material requirements for a matt black paint, based on flexible epoxide
resins, to be applied as a finishing coat on top of sealing paint to MAT 5500, or on top of a coat of
PS 5610A polyurethane paint.

B. The quality of the material shall be controlled to M.o.D. approved firms schedule (AFS) 998.

C. The lacquer is available in a two part ‘kit’, the two parts are mixed together immediately prior to use
in the proportions of 4:1 and are designated as ‘Base’ and ‘Accelerator’, respectively.

D. This specification supersedes MAT 501 for all Dowty Propellers contracts.
Any suffix numbers are the same as in the previous MAT 501, i.e. for MAT 501-1 read MAT 5501-1.

2. Supply

A. The lacquer is made up in bulk by: Indestructible Paint Ltd., 23-25 Pentos Drive, Sparkhill,
Birmingham B11 3TA and the ‘Base’ is designated by their reference No. 700-155-005 and the
‘Accelerator’ by their reference No. 656-450-002.

B. The lacquer is packed and distributed in small two-part ‘kits’ by:

and is then to be designated by the reference No. MAT 5501.

3. Packaging

A. The Base and Accelerator is to be supplied in non-contaminating, sealed containers and clearly
labelled with the following information in BLACK print:

MAT 5501 approved to AFS 998.

Matt Sealing Paint - Base (or Accelerator) as applicable.

Batch Reference Number.

Date of Manufacture.

Expiry Date.

B. The labels must also carry clear warning signs that the material is harmful and highly flammable.

C. For production purposes the material is available in 5 litre containers.

For the use of Aircraft Operators, small quantities should be supplied as follows:

½ pint of Base, 1/8 pint of Accelerator.

4. Storage

A. The material should be stored in a dry cool place away from sources of ignition.

B. The materials, when stored in unopened containers, have storage lives of 12 months in temperate
climates, i.e. up to 29°C (84.2°F). This life is calculated from the release date. In hot climates the
storage life is reduced to 9 months for temperatures up to 35°C (95°F) and 6 months for
temperatures over 35°C (95°F).

C. When these storage lives have been exceeded the materials must be disposed in the following
manner.

(1) Materials packed in small kits must be discarded.

(2) Materials packed in large containers, e.g. 5 litre tins, must be sampled and the samples sent to
a suitable laboratory for relifing.

5. Application

A. The method of application of this lacquer is given in PS 5610B.

B. Details of its application will be found on relevant drawings and Process Specifications detailing the
fitting of de-icer overshoes.

6. Health and Safety

A. This specification calls up materials and processes which may cause injury to health, either directly
or indirectly, unless proper precautions are taken. Operators shall wear appropriate clothing and
employ safe working practices.

B. The precautions are listed in the Manufacture Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). At Dowty Propellers,
copies of the MSDS’s are held in the Print Room.

C. Local supervision is responsible for ensuring operators follow health and safety precautions.
