Frames Systems Case Study Analysis

This document is a structure project report for Unit 2. It analyzes the effects of vertical loads, wind loads, temperature changes of 20 degrees C, and a 1 cm settlement on the bending moment, normal force, and shear force in the frame. The conclusion discusses how wide columns experience more bending from wind loads due to higher stiffness. It also compares modeling deep beams and wide columns using frame elements versus shell elements. It analyzes how temperature changes cause compression in beams and tension in base columns, increasing column shear and decreasing beam shear. A 1 cm settlement increases beam bending at the affected column.

Conclusion
 When wind load effect on the structure the Wide columns have
much bigger moment than slender columns….because their
stiffness is (3/0.5)3=216 time the stiffness of the slender
columns.
 The same with deep beams at moment distribution
 Modeling the deep beams and wide columns can be done by 2
methods:

 Using Frame elements :

This method is not accurate
because it considers that the section of the element is
Very stiff and ignores its deformations so gives more
stiffness for the member and more Straining actions on it.

 Using shell elements :

This method is more accurate
because the deep elements modeling is membrane shell
elements so the deformations in the section is considered
and that gives less stiffness for the member and less
straining actions

 When adding Thermal effect on the structure compression force

occurs at beams and tension force at base columns so that
shear increases on columns and decreases on beams.
 Thermal effects on bending at columns because of expansion
at beams causes shear force at columns which cause bending
moment

 If settlement of 1 cm occurs under the column that supports the

2 wide beams that causes the highest effect on the structure
and tension force forms on that column instead of compression
and increasing the compression force at other columns.
 settlement increases the bending moment in the 2 wide beams
supported by that column because of the effect of (6EI Δ /L2)
