What are the applications of Derivatives in real life?
Derivatives help us to understand how larger things are made from smaller things. Just like how a
curve is made of multiple infinite straight lines. Now, derivatives can tell you the instantaneous slope (dy/dx) of
this graph. Slope tells you the marginal cost of producing every additional unit at that instant.
Application 1: (Business)
If you run a business ( say selling ice cream), derivatives can help you decide what quantity you should
sell.
-Your manager gives you some data how your business has been performing over the past few months.
You tabulate data and draw a curve to see the trend. So you sell each ice cream for 10 bucks.
x-axis shows the number of units you produced
y-axis shows the cost you incurred
(there is some fixed cost, as seen when units produced=0)
-You seem impressed with the growth shown in the graph. However, you are curious why the curve is
getting steeper as the quantity increases. Your manager tells you that since for producing more ice cream you need
more milk, he reaches out to milk sellers in other areas of the city to provide milk. So the transportation cost
increases, hence the steepness in the curve.
-At this moment you can feel happy that your products is in demand and that your business is growing.
Application 3: (Teaching)
If you want to teach someone something, the ultimate goal is to increase their knowledge, say K. We can
simply let them memorize some knowledge at a fixed speed. So K’ is constant and we are increasing K at a constant
speed. So K grows like x.
-Now, rather than teach them the material, you can try to motivate their interests. With more interests in
the subject, they will learn faster. So motivating their interests is like increasing K’. So K’ is constant (the amount of
their current interests), and K’ is increasing at a constant speed, and K’ is like a parabola, like x^2.
Anti-derivatives can help us to solve many types of real-world problems. It was developed to
improve this understanding. We use this to determine the maximum and minimum values of particular functions
(e.g. cost, strength, amount of material used in a building, profit, loss, etc.).
Application 1: (Pilots)
It is mainly used in daily by pilots to measure the pressure in the air. Shipwrecks occurred because the
ship was not where the captain thought it should be. There was not good enough understanding of how the Earth,
stars, and planets moved with respect to each other.
Application 2: (Geography)
This differentiation and integration is usually used in geography, where it is an area of study that deals
with the location of countries, cities, rivers, mountains, lakes, etc. and it is used to study gases present in the
atmosphere.
Application 4: (Force)
Let’s say that the librarian displaces a book from an upper shelf to a lower one. If the vertical distance
between the two shelves is away .5 meters and the weight of the book is 5.
-In order to be able to to lift the book and move it to its new position, the librarian must exert force that is
at least equal to the weight of the book.
-Here we say that the work is negative since there is a loss of gravitational potential energy rather than a
gain in energy. If the book is lifted to a higher shelf, then the work is positive, since there will be a gain in the
gravitational potential energy.
Application 5: (History)
In differentiation and integration it is used also in part of history. Where some scientist are using it for
predicting how long life does the stone has to consider it as a precious one in history.
