Noli Me tangere- It has freshness, color, humor, wit and lightness

El Fili- but it has bitterness, hatred, pain, violence and sorrow

Jose Rizal’s intentions was to make El filibusterismo longer than noli me tangere howere El
filibusterismo is shorter than Noli Me Tangere because El fili contains 39 chapters while Noli contains 64
chapters.

The Title
Noli- An urgent call for the Filipinos to see for themselves the social ills and do something for the
country. Noli is a love story or a romantic novel, dedicated to our motherland
El Fili- It signify a movement severely punished by the government. It explains the reasons why
revolution takes place. El fili is a political novel associated with revenge and anger and is dedicated to
GOMBURZA

The Cover-
Noli- In the Noli, each figure on the cover signifies something. Viewed holistically, the cover it itself may
serve as the synopsis of the whole story of the novel
El Fili- The cover of El Fili depicts the three martyred priests GOMBURZA. They were executed in their
campaign for secularization of the parishes and were implicated in the Cavity mutiny. They were garroted
at Bagumbayan on February 17, 1872.
Noli-
1. SILHOUETTE OF A FILIPINA- It was popular belief that the silhouette of the woman in the
cover of Noli Me Tangere is the unfortunate Maria Clara, Crisostomo Ibarra’s lover.
2. A MAN IN A CASSOCK WITH HAIRY FEET- This symbolism at the lower part of the cover is
to be a representation for priests using religion in a dirty way, specifically Padre Damaso
3. HELMET OF THE GUARDIA CIVIL- An obvious take on the arrogance of those in authority
4. WHIP- The cruelties present in the novel best explains the symbol Rizal used in the cove

discrimination towards Filipinos, Chinese Mestizos and Spaniards during this time towards a
proper burial

defense of honors and the start of proving themselves worthy of victory. Rage and passion are
most abundant in this phase. Represents a phrase that could possibly mean everything to every

9. POMELO BLOSSOMS AND LAUREL LEAVES- They roughly represent faith, honor and
fidelity. P0melo blossoms are utilized as loose potpourri or a mixture of dried flower petals and
spices used to scent the air. It is commonly used in prayers and cleansing. The laurel leaves, also
known as bay leaves, are used as crowns during the Ancient Greek Olympics wherein the best of
the best are treated as heroes. Filipinos in this time wants to embody these three virtues that Rizal
represented as two plants.

appeared in many ancient myths and is viewed as a symbol of loyalty and constancy. The
sunflower's petals have been likened to bright yellow rays of sunshine, which evoke feelings of

longevity. Rizal’s observation towards the happiness of the Filipinos are, in the Spanish times, are
only fulfilled through their giving in and bowing down to the more powerful entity: Spain

and what are his expectations
NOli- Noli’s preface echoes the thematic passage running through the novel. Rizal reveals his people’s
agony and vices in the open that their miseries may attract attention, even at the cost of his life. The
preface shows that Rizal anticipated the price he has to pay for his expose.
“With my pen I will strive hard to record thy condition as I actually see it, without reservations, without
giving any allowance to distinction. I will lift partly the veil that hides thy ills and expose the truth even
though in so doing I sacrifice myself.”

imply high social status but it could be deduced also that they were defrocked and excommunicated
