Lesson #1 _Functions of Communication____________________

Prerequisite Content-knowledge: The Nature and Process of Communication

Prerequisite Skill: Understands the nature and elements of oral communication

Prerequisites Assessment:

The teacher gives a 10-item test about the Nature and Elements of Oral Communication

Pre-lesson Remediation Activity:

1. For Students with Insufficient Level on Prerequisite Content-knowledge and/or Skill(s):

The teacher will give a supplementary material about the essential concept of the prerequisite lesson.

2. For Students with Fairly Sufficient Level on Prerequisite Content-knowledge and/or Skill(s):

The leaners will complete an incomplete concept map about the prerequisite lesson facilitated by the teacher.

Introduction:

 The learners are expected to finish the lesson in 2 days or two (2) hours. The students may contact the teacher via email or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for online, through text messaging or
calls and through written feedback indicated in the module or learning material for printed or modular, and immediate feedbacking for F2F students.
 The students are expected to gain the following skills from this topic/lesson:
1. Remembering – the different functions of communication.
2. Understanding – the subtle differences of each function.
3. Apply – this skill in grasping various messages from different people and understanding the real purpose of the message being received.

 Context where the students are going to apply this learning:


1. To control, socialize, motivate, inform, and express oneself or group of people through communication.

 This lesson will prepare the students to amplify their communication skills by understanding the different functions of communication. The lesson will introduce learners the purpose(s) of every
speech, ascertains the verbal and nonverbal cues that each speaker uses to achieve a purpose. This will also identifies strategies used by different speakers to effectively convey his/her message.

Student’s Experiential Learning: Discussion, Video Analysis and Critiquing

Day 1:

Formative question(s):

1. What are the functions of communication?


2. Why is it essential to understand the different functions of communication?
3. Does knowing the purpose of speech important? Why or why not?

Objectives: By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

1. List down the functions of communication


2. Identify the functions/purposes of a speech watched/listened to

Flexible Learning Strategy #1: Discussion about the Functions of Communication

Online: Reading an online article via Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) about the functions of communication

Printed/Modular: Reading an article about the lesson attached in the module

F2F: Gallery Walk

Flexible Learning Strategy #2: Video Analysis (leaners will identify the purpose of the speech)

Online: Watch and listen videos embedded in the VLE

Printed/Modular: Read a video script attached in the learner’s module

F2F: Watch and listen videos provided by the teacher

Day 2:

Formative question(s):

1. Did the speaker clearly convey the message?


2. Was the content to inform, motivate, express or control?
3. Did the speaker make effective use of verbal and nonverbal communication?
4. Was the language suitable to the purpose of the speech?
5. Did the speaker exhibit poise and confidence?

Objectives: By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

1. Critique a speech

Flexible Learning Strategy #1: Critiquing of a Speech

Online: Critique a speech via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

Printed/Modular: Critique a speech script attached in the learning module.

F2F: Critique a speech

Synthesis: The students will be able to draft and deliver a speech effectively with the appropriate function or purpose.

Synthesis Question: How do you effectively convey a message using the functions of communication?

RUA of a Student’s Learning: The learners understand the importance of the functions of communication to effectively convey a message to different individuals.

Post-lesson Remediation Activity: Consultation and additional supplementary materials for those learners who have difficulties of the topic.
