Lesson 1. Learning Skills

The term “21st-century skills” is generally used to refer to certain core competencies such as
collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving that advocates believe schools need
to teach to help students thrive in today's world.
a. Collaboration teaches students that groups can create something bigger and better than you can on
your own. Communication teaches students how to efficiently convey ideas. Combined, the four C's
empower students to become one-person think tanks. Then, when those students get together, they
can achieve almost anything.

Collaboration in the workplace is when two or more people (often groups) work together through
idea sharing and thinking to accomplish a common goal. ... The phrase 'putting our heads together'
would be a good example of this important element of collaboration.

b. Digital literacy means having the skills you need to live, learn, and work in a society where
communication and access to information is increasingly through digital technologies like internet
platforms, social media, and mobile devices.

c. Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing,
applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by,
observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.

Good critical thinkers are able to identify what information is significant, moving them towards
greater understanding. In a world awash with data, critical thinking helps us focus on relevant
information, possible connections and logical actions to take.

Critical thinking has been identified as a key skill to foster innovation. ... Subjects in the STEM
curriculum teach students how to think critically and how to solve problems — skills that can be
used throughout life to help them get through tough times and take advantage of opportunities
whenever they appear.

d. Problem-solving skills help you determine why an issue is happening and how to resolve that
issue. It's one of the key skills that employers seek in job applicants. Problem-solving starts with
identifying the issue, coming up with solutions, implementing those solutions, and evaluating their
effectiveness.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving – Students use analysis to gain an understanding of issues in
today's world and to comprehend the significant aspects of complex situations set in the future.
Problem solving skills are applied as they focus on possible solutions and develop Action Plans for
those situations.

Some key problem-solving skills include:

 Active listening.
 Analysis.
 Research.
 Creativity.
 Communication.
 Dependability.
 Decision making.
 Team-building.

Lesson 2 . Literacy skills

The three 21st Century literacy skills are:

a. Information literacy: Understanding facts, figures, statistics, and data.

The ability to articulate one's information need. The ability to identify, locate and access appropriate
sources of information to meet the information need. The ability to effectively use information
resources, regardless of format. The ability to critically and ethically apply the information.

Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all
learning environments, and to all levels of education. It enables learners to master content and
extend their investigations, become more self- directed, and assume greater control over their
learning.

b. Media literacy: Understanding the methods and outlets in which information is published.

Media literacy is the ability to encode and decode the symbols transmitted via media and the ability
to synthesize, analyze and produce mediated messages.

Media literacy, put simply, is the ability to identify different types of media and the messages they
are sending. ... Therefore, we as the readers or viewers need to view the media objectively, with the
goal to find out or analyze what is being presented.

c. Technology literacy: Understanding the machines that make the Information Age possible.

Digital literacy plays a vital role in defining a child's ability to succeed both in school and throughout
their lives. This is an inherent aspect of 21st century education, which is the spine of our
educational pedagogy here at World Academy.

Technological literacy prepares individuals to make well-informed choices in their role as consumers.
The world is full of products and services that promise to make people's lives easier, more enjoyable,
more efficient, or healthier, and more and more of these products appear every year.

Lesson 3 –Life Skills

1st Century Life and Careers. ... Mission: 21st century life and career skills enable students to make
informed decisions that prepare them to engage as active citizens in a dynamic global society and to
successfully meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century global workplace.

How important is 21st century skills in life?

These 21st-century skills are more important to students now than ever before. They not only provide a
framework for successful learning in the classroom, but ensure students can thrive in a world where
change is constant and learning never stops. And they are also tremendously important for our nation's
well being.
