Bucket Elevators, Bucket Conveyors

and More
A new generation of bucket elevators from
conveyor manufacturers Ryson International
Ryson International has developed a new generation of bucket elevators and bucket conveyors.
These enclosed pivoting bucket systems can have multiple in and outlets. The bucket elevators
combine vertical and horizontal transportation of bulk material in one integral unit. Their modular
design and rugged construction make them suitable for a wide variety of applications. Choose from
painted carbon steel, stainless steel or washdown versions.

The Ryson bucket elevators are designed for gentle handling and quiet operation to facilitate
transportation of measured quantities. Available in several sizes, the buckets overlap at the infeed
and remain in an upward position until emptied to prevent spills. Ryson Bucket Elevators are well-
suited for a broad range of bulk products in the food, agriculture, pharmaceutical, cosmetic,
chemical, ceramic, glass, recycling, building and metallurgical industries.

Bucket Elevators with

Rugged Construction

The Ryson Bucket Elevators are

designed to withstand many
years of heavy duty operations.
Elevators with multiple outlets
have selective bucket tipping
capabilities created by an air
actuated tipping ramp. The last
tipping ramp stays in a fixed
position to assure that all buckets
are emptied.

The chain is a 2" roller chain with

hollow pin shaft and 1 1/8"
diameter rollers. The conveying
surface is made of polyurethane
for smooth and quiet operation.
The buckets are made of a food
grade reinforced polycarbonate
molded in one piece that can
handle temperatures from -5 to
215 degrees Fahrenheit.

Anti-static and stainless steel

buckets are optional. The bucket
elevators allow for controlled
feeds at one or more locations
and can easily interface with
various types of feeding devices.

Bucket Elevator Models

Three standard models are available, sized to handle capacities of up to 350, 830 and 2,000 cubic
feet per hour. Ryson also provides custom solutions to help those with needs that fall outside of our
standard models.

Optional Bucket
Elevator Features
Several optional features
are available to
accommodate specific
needs:

- Dust proof enclosures

- Weather tight
construction
- Anti-static buckets
- Stainless steel buckets
- Built-in forced ventilation
- Automatic bucket
cleaning
- Variable speed
- Explosion proof

Low Maintenance
Ryson bucket elevators use only high quality, low maintenance components. All models have easy to
remove inspection covers and a conveniently located inspection window. Drawers underneath all
horizontal sections facilitate easy cleaning, while smooth inside walls prevent dust buildup. All
bearings are mounted outside for easy access. The buckets have a quick release mechanism to
facilitate fast installation or removal of buckets. All elevators are equipped with an automatic chain
tensioning device and built-in overload protection.

Modular Design of Our Bucket Elevators

The modular design accommodates a wide range of configurations and makes the elevators easy
to install and modify. The most universal configurations are the C and Z versions. Many other
configurations are possible; some examples are shown below.
Screw conveyors for bulk materials
handling and processing
Since 1949, Jacmor Engineering, has specialised in the design and manufacture of screw conveyor
systems and their application to processing and handling of bulk materials. Our skills and expertise
are recognised in a wide range of industries with Jacmor designed and manufactured equipment
operating throughout Australia and overseas markets.

Jacmor screw conveyor systems are working right now in

aluminium refineries, chemical plants, power generating stations,
coal wash facilities, bakeries, flour mills, sewerage works, timber
and pulp mills, refractories, food processors and many other
industries. They are the most efficient cost effective method of
bulk materials handling in many of today's processing and
manufacturing industries.

Their long life, simplicity of maintenance, high efficiency even under partial load and reliability when
handling heavy and demanding materials give them outstanding advantages compared with
alternative systems.
Screw conveyors
Screw conveyors and screw flights form an integral part of many
production processes. Mixing, blending, heating, cooling, liquid extraction,
dewatering, drying or similar operations can be performed whilst bulk
solids or liquids are being conveyed from one point to another.

Screw conveying is not limited to transporting materials on a horizontal

plane. Standard designs with auxiliary equipment are available for
operating on inclines or for the vertical elevation of materials.

The use of solid state digital control systems, PLCs (program logic
controllers) and loss of weight feeders add a high degree of sophistication
and control.

Highly developed seals confine the products conveyed within the trough along with dust, fumes or
gases. Materials can similarly be protected from contamination and the elements.

Comparatively compact, screw conveyors do not require a return run, are virtually vibration free and
relatively quiet in operation. Multiple inlet and discharge points are easily incorporated.

Screw conveyors are capable of continuous operation, usually require minimal maintenance and are
considered to be relatively inexpensive equipment resulting in cost effective processing operations.

Screw Feeders
When screw conveyors are used to discharge material from the base of bins or hoppers, they are
designed as screw feeders and can accurately meter the materials being discharged.

Live Bottom Bins

When multiple screw feeders are used to empty
the contents of a bin, they are called "live bottom
bins" and are ideally suited for discharging
materials that have a tendency to pack or bridge.

Mixing and Blending

Jacmor manufacture a wide range of mixers and blenders suitable for use in many industries
including the food industry. A complex ribbon design promotes thorough homogenous mixing of a
multitude of products in large batches.

Recent Developments
As materials of construction such as abrasion-resistant alloys and stainless steels have been developed over the
years, the use of screw conveyors has increased to many more industries as previously discussed. Recent
production technology improvements include automating specific manufacturing processes that improve quality and
reduce costs. The use of automated or robotic welding in the screw-making process is a good example.

One of the most recent developments is the shaftless screw conveyor which utilizes a screw without the center pipe.
The screw or spiral is constructed from high-strength steel and is rigid enough to handle the drive torque. The spiral
typically lies in the bottom of the trough on a liner made from UHMW plastic or metal. The drive shaft is connected
directly to the shaftless spiral. The shaftless conveyor was originally developed to convey wet and sticky materials.
When conveyed with a shafted screw conveyor, wet and sticky materials have a tendency to stick to the pipe where
the flight is attached. Since the center pipe is eliminated in a shaftless conveyor, there is no place for the material to
stick. The image below shows a typical shaftless screw conveyor.

Differences Between
Manufacturers
Each screw conveyor manufacturer is unique and provides
different products and services. Some manufacturers specialize
in providing CEMA standard stock components while others
focus on custom designs. It is important to choose the proper
screw conveyor manufacturer based on your specific needs and
the customers in your area. For example, if you have several
rendering plants in your area, you will need a manufacturer that
specializes in designing and building heavy-duty screw
conveyors. Material thickness for screw flights and troughs can
be as thick as one inch. Manufacturers that regularly build screw
conveyors for the rendering industry must have special flight
presses and other equipment for forming and handling one-inch
thick plate. Also make sure the manufacturer that you choose
has a written quality control program and is ISO 9001-2008
certified so you know you are getting quality equipment. Welders
must also be certified to either AWS or ASME code standards.

The major screw conveyor manufacturers are active members of

CEMA and can be located by going to www.cemanet.org. You
can contact CEMA for information if you are not familiar with a
certain manufacturer. Also, check out the individual company's website or contact the company directly to discuss
capabilities and quality programs.

Adding Value for the Customer

Screw conveyors are an important part of your customer's operations. If a screw conveyor continually fails or requires
excess maintenance, then your customer is not efficiently producing product. Having a basic knowledge of screw
conveyor design along with understanding the application will help you in solving the customer's problem. For
example, your customer is conveying petroleum coke and replacing screws every three months. The CEMA material
classification code for petroleum coke is 30D737N. The code indicates that the petroleum coke weighs 30 lbs. per
cubic foot, has a large lump size, has average flowability, is extremely abrasive and can be explosive. The screws are
wearing out prematurely because petroleum coke is extremely abrasive. As an added value, you can offer screws
constructed from abrasion-resistant materials or the screw flights can be hardsurfaced with a weld-on hardsurfacing
material.

The right image shows a screw conveyor with weld-

on hardsurfacing on the screw and internal surfaces
of the housing. IDC University offers a two-day course
in screw conveyor design and applications.
Applications such as those mentioned in this article
will be discussed in detail and you will get hands-on
experience with screw conveyors. You will gain
important knowledge about various industries and
applications that will help you increase sales and
make your company more profitable.

Bill Mecke, P.E. is Vice-President and owner of KWS Manufacturing Company, Ltd. He has over 20 years of experience in
the bulk material handling industry and in the design of screw conveyors. Bill is currently the chairman of the CEMA
Engineering Committee for Screw Conveyors. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from
Texas A & M University and is a professional engineer in the state of Texas.

1. Ash Grove Cement to receive longest

pivoting pan conveyor
The delivery of a 232 meters long pivoting pan conveyor via its US subsidiary, to Ash
Grove Foreman (USA) marks a new length record set by AUMUND Fördertechnik in
Rheinberg, Germany. The pivoting pan conveyor forms part of a delivery package for a new
line and has been designed for the transport of clinker with a conveying capacity of up to
272 mt/h. The Ash Grove Cement Company founded in 1882 and headquartered in Kansas,
operates cement plants in the South Western US states. With a yearly production of 9
million tons the company is one of the leading cement producers in the USA. The cement
produced by Ash Grove is utilized for main infrastructure and housing projects.

AUMUND pivoting pan conveyors (type SPB) provide a proven solution, when more than
two clinker silos or several mill hoppers are to be fed. The conveyor’s special feature is that
it allows intermediate discharge, wherever discharge stations are located along its entire
conveying path. Thus, various tasks of material distribution may be realized in a single
conveyor.

A special pan pivoting system in the area of the drive and tension station enables the pan
to be upright in the upper and lower run, and allow simultaneous material transport in both
runs.

The pivoting pan conveyor for Ash Grove will transport cement clinker in both directions in
a single conveyor, a two-way chute will feed the material in the lower run onto the
conveyor. The upper run is fed by a standard feeding chute. The material transport which
may be performed simultaneously in upper and lower run allows clinker to be transported
to and from the new plant to the old line with a single conveyor.
It would e.g. be possible to feed the material in the upper run and subsequently transfer it
via an upper run discharge station into the lower run. The material distribution may be
effected via discharge stations in the lower run into clinker silos or mill hoppers..

In the past, AUMUND implemented most difficult transport solutions by means of the
pivoting pan conveyor. For instance, cement clinker was fed in the lower run into a silo,
while the upper run transported gypsum to another hopper at the same time.

Sensor-monitored and computer-aided remote control of the discharge stations as well as

automatic feeding of silos form part of the standard equipment. Optimum material
distribution is achieved by co-operative planning. Different constructional heights may be
compensated by chute systems. Decisive aspects for the design of the pivoting pan
conveyor are the requested conveying capacity, the conveyor speed, the bulk weight of the
material and the filling rate. In the past, AUMUND already implemented conveyors with
capacities of over 600 t/h.

The conveying elements of the pivoting pan conveyor consist of approx. 1 m long pans,
which have formed sides and overlap by approx. 70 mm. The standard side wall heights of
150 or 200 mm. Each conveyor pan is supported by a rod that connects to the chain on
each side. The other end of the conveyor plates is supported via two rollers on the track.
The rollers follow the track and the pan pivots about the rod, creating the tipping action.
The pans are pulled in the lower run via the flight axle and pushed in the upper run.

The lowering of the rails in the discharge station and the pivoting arrangement of the pans
enable the process of discharging and the flipping of the pans in the area of the drive and
tension stations.

The discharge stations may be located in such a way that an optimum feeding of silos or
hoppers is ensured. They are activated and monitored by a programmable logic control.
When the discharge stations are activated, the inlet point opens the access to the rail
recess of the discharge station by means of a geared motor. This inlet point may be remote
controlled. Additional monitoring by means of a limit switch ensures that there will be no
roller in the area of the inlet point during the switching operation.

The AUMUND pivoting pan conveyor, as part of a long history of conveying technology,
excelled above all by its multitude of possible applications.

In the last years orders for modernization of old clinker halls by means of pivoting pan
conveyors had a considerable share in the order intake. Often, old clinker halls are
equipped with bridge cranes. In permanent operation, these cranes distribute the
continuously conveyed clinker in the hall or transfer it to the mill hoppers. At the same
time, additives, such as gypsum and slag must be transported to the corresponding mill
hoppers. For modernization of clinker halls, AUMUND has realized several installations using
a pivoting pan conveyor to provide the mill hoppers automatically with both clinker and
additives. Level detectors at the mill hoppers indicate the clinker requirement and control
the pivoting pan conveyor with its discharge stations.

The pivoting pan conveyor is functional, efficient and achieves a constant and uniform
material distribution with little effort, demonstrated by its very low power demand. In
addition to its considerably lower dust generation contributes to environmental protection
and humanization of industry.

Truck-mounted crane

Truck-mounted crane

A crane mounted on a truck carrier provides the mobility for this type of crane.

Generally, these cranes are able to travel on highways, eliminating the need for special
equipment to transport the crane. When working on the jobsite, outriggers are extended
horizontally from the chassis then vertically to level and stabilize the crane while stationary and
hoisting. Many truck cranes have slow-travelling capability (a few miles per hour) while
suspending a load. Great care must be taken not to swing the load sideways from the direction of
travel, as most anti-tipping stability then lies in the stiffness of the chassis suspension. Most
cranes of this type also have moving counterweights for stabilization beyond that provided by the
outriggers. Loads suspended directly aft are the most stable, since most of the weight of the crane
acts as a counterweight. Factory-calculated charts (or electronic safeguards) are used by crane
operators to determine the maximum safe loads for stationary (outriggered) work as well as (on-
rubber) loads and travelling speeds.

Truck cranes range in lifting capacity from about

Crawler crane

Crawler crane

A crawler is a crane mounted on an undercarriage with a set of tracks (also called crawlers) that
provide stability and mobility. Crawler cranes range in lifting capacity from about 40 to 3,500
short tons (35.7 to 3,125.0 long tons; 36.3 to 3,175.1 t).
Crawler cranes have both advantages and disadvantages depending on their use. Their main
advantage is that they can move around on site and perform each lift with little set-up, since the
crane is stable on its tracks with no outriggers. In addition, a crawler crane is capable of traveling
with a load. The main disadvantage is that they are very heavy, and cannot easily be moved from
one job site to another without significant expense. Typically a large crawler must be
disassembled and moved by

Overhead crane

Also known as a 'suspended crane', an overhead crane works very similar to a gantry crane but
instead of the whole crane moving, only the hoist / trolley assembly moves in one direction along
one or two fixed beams, often mounted along the side walls or on elevated columns in the
assembly area of factory. Some of these cranes can lift very heavy loads.

Off-Highway Dump Trucks…
I have working for this MNC (General and Mining
Contractors) for almost a year now. As a mechanical planning
engineer, I have to deal with a lot of heavy duty equipment,
which are mining production equipment. In our company, we
divide the machines into two groups; Major equipments &
Support Equipments. Major Equipments are machine which
work on mining site as a production units, commonly consist
of Hydraulic Excavators, Off-Highway Dump Trucks,
Highway Dump trucks, Dozers, Graders, Loaders and Drill
Rigs while Support equipments are machines who… well,
gave support :D … this group includes lighting tower, man haul, service trucks, cranes, fuel
trucks, light vehicles etc. In this first posting about mining contractors, I would like to give you a
brief introduction to Off-Highway Dump trucks.

note: The picture is displaying ‘one set’ of mining production equipment; one hydraulic
excavators and several off-highway dump trucks (however, you can only see one truck in the
picture)
In general, there are two types of Off-Highway Dump trucks; Articulated Dump Trucks (ADT)
and Rigid Dump Trucks (RDT).
