CONDITIONAL CLAUSES (beginning with ‘if’)

 An ‘if clause’ is always a dependent clause as it never conveys complete meaning.


 As ‘if clause’ is always a dependent clause, it will be part of a complex sentence.
 If clauses can be used to convey meaning in various ways:

 TYPE 0 – conveys facts or general truths.


Structure – If + simple present, simple present
Eg. If it rains heavily, we can’t go out.

 TYPE 1 – conveys possible conditions


Structure – If + simple present, simple future
Eg. If it rains moderately, we will go out.

 TYPE 2 – conveys possible condition which is unlikely to happen


Structure – If + simple past, would + verb (Ist form)
Eg. If you liked it, you would take it as your hobby.

 TYPE 3 – conveys imaginary condition which is just impossible to be fulfilled (the action had
already happened in the past)
Structure – If + past perfect, would + have + past participle
Eg. If I had more money, I would have funded education for the poor.
