 The story "Too Dear" is a
humosous and satiric description of
the political set-up of a small
kingdom called Monaco.

 The knig of Monaco is a toy


kingdom.

 It is situated near the borders of


France and Italy.

 It is a little kingdom with seven


thousand inhabitants.

 It as a king, palace, ministers, a


bishop, army courtiers, generals
and army with only sixty soldiers.

 There are also taxes on tobacco,
on wine, spirits and a poll tax in
this kingdom.

 Though gambling is a dirty


business the prince of Monaco
stick to it for extra income.

 He remained with a monopoly of


this gambling business to make a
money.

 Once a murder was committed by


the criminal.

 The king ordered for the


execution of the criminal.

 But there was a hitch as they did not
have a guillotine and an executioner
to cut the criminal head.

 The French government


demanded 16,000 Francs and the
Italy 12,000 Francs.

 It was too expensive so the death


sentence altered to life
imprisonment.

 Alter one year there was more


than 600 Francs expenditure for
the guard and for the food to the
criminal.

 Therfore the guard was dismissed
and expected to run away.

 But the criminal was unwilling to


go away from the prison.

 He told the king that they had


ruined his character by this
sentence and people would turn
their backs on him.

 Besides he had got out of the way


of working.

 According to the criminal the king
should have executed him but they
had sentenced him to
imprisonment for life and put a
guard to bring his food.

 So he refused to escape from the


prison.

 The criminal demanded pension


of 600 Francs.

 Alter talking one third of the


annuity the criminal settled in the
borders of Monaco.

 He spent 2-3 Francs on gambling,
sometimes won or sometimes loss
but he lived comfortably and
peaceable.

 He bought a bit of land and


started market gardening and
lived happly.
