Three cheers for the nanny state Vocabulary

1. Impose ( Imponer )

Force a law, idea, or belief on someone by using authority. Demand


someone to comply, bear, pay or accept a thing.

He wants the government to impose strict controls on junk food

2. Rational ( Racional )
Is the ability to think, evaluate, understand and act according to certain principles
of improvement and consistency, to satisfy some objective or purpose. Able to
make decisions based on reason rather than emotion; sensible.

He is too angry to be rational.


3. Justifiable ( Justificable )
That can be justified by having reasons in favor. Able to be defended as correct;
reasonable and logical.

It is justifiable that he does not come to work, he is in the hospital.

4. Principle: Moral rule or set of ideas about right or wrong that influences
individual to behave in a certain way.

His principles made him return the money he found.


5. Status quo ( en el estado en que)

The status quo is the state of affairs of a certain moment. Existing state or
condition at a particular time.

The status quo of this pandemic will not last long.

6. Generalization ( generalización,generalizar)

A proposition asserting something to be true either of all members of a


certain class or of an indefinite part of that class. Is a broad statement that
gives no details.

The generalization that all children are poorly educated is not true.
7. Relevant ( relevante )

That it is appropriate or timely at a particular time or occasion.

It is relevant because my son does not want to eat the food.

8. Author’s perspective (Perspectiva del autor)

Includes his or her attitudes, beliefs, and feelings. Is how the author feels
about the subject.

You will understand the novel when you read it and feel the author's
perspective.
9. Fuss ( Escándalo )

Said or fact that causes great astonishment or indignation in someone,


especially because it is considered contrary to morals or social conventions.

The video of them drunk was a fuss.

10. Ban ( prohibición )

Action of prohibiting. An official or legal prohibition.

A proposal to ban rockets at Christmas for children.


11. Bias ( Parcialdidad )

The action of supporting or opposing a particular person or thing in an unfair


way, because of allowing personal opinions to influence your judgment.
Inclination for or against a person or thing when acting or judging a matter.

The newspaper suggested a clear bias against the non-vaccinated.

12. Laws ( Leyes )


Rule or norm established by a higher authority to regulate, in accordance with
justice, some aspect of social relations.

Traffic laws are very strict in Europe.
