The Center for Generational Kinetics mentions five generations

that presently make up our society and specifies
birth years for each generation as follows

Gen Z, iGen, or Centennials: Born 1996 and laterMillennials or Gen Y:

Born 1977 to 1995Generation X: Born 1965 to 1976Baby Boomers: Born
1946 to 1964Traditionalists or Silent Generation: Born 1945 and before

A. Traditionalists or Silent Generation Traditionalists are known as the

silent generation. The Silent Generation refers to people who were
born between 1925 and 1945. There are several theories as to where
the label Silent Generation originated. The children who grew up during
this time worked very hard and kept quiet. It was commonly understood
that children should be seen and not heard.

B. Baby Boomer The Baby Boomers were born roughly between the
years of 1946 and 1964, placing them in the age range between 51
and 70 years. Perhaps the most influential generation in history. They
generally distrust authority and large systems. This flower power
generation is known for their pivotal roles in the civil rights movement,
inflation, Woodstock, and the Vietnam War that their values were
shaped. Baby Boomers are the first generation to actively declare a
higher priority for work over personal life. They are more optimistic and
open to change than the prior generation, but they are also responsible
for the Me Generation, with its pursuit of personal gratification, which
often shows up as a sense of entitlement in today’s work force.

C. Generation X Generation X, also called Gen X is a group of

individuals who were born anywhere between 1965 and 1979. It is the
demographic cohort that follows the generation falling between the
years 1944 and 1964 and commonly referred to as Baby Boomers
(Brown, 2019). They are known as sandwich generation and latch-key
kids.

D. Generation Z Born roughly between 1995 and 2012, Generation Z is

the next generation that is still growing up. The average age is
somewhere between 4 and 19 years old. But we do know that these
toddlers are already hooked on technology.

E. Millennials Millennials are the demographic cohort directly following

the generation X. It is also known as Generation Y or the Net
Generation.. This group is the first global-centric generation, having
come of age during the rapid growth of the internet and an increase in
global terrorism. They are among the most resilient in navigating
change while deepening their appreciation for diversity and inclusion.
With significant gains in technology and an increase in educational
programming during the 1990s, the Millennials are also the most
educated generation of workers today. A major influence from Boomer
parents is their willingness to work hard and set goals to achieve the
lifestyle they want. They also share many of the common values of
patriotism and family from the Silent era. At times, they can appear
more demanding than previous generations.

F. Fillinials (Filipino Millenials) In Filipino terms, Millennials are called

Filinnials. They are described as the selfie generation and followers of
social media. Increased use and familiarity with communications,
media, and digital technologies. The social media opened their eyes
that traditional media such as TV, movie, radio, and print are no longer
the source of information. It must be noted though that there are also
good attitudes. Millennial’s upbringing is said to be marked by an
increased in a liberal approach to politics, economics, and morality.
Compared to other generations, millennials have their say about issues
and are more involved with politics and are more expressive when it
comes to their opinions. Even in terms of work ethics, they are known
to be non-linear individuals which the traditionalists sometimes
misunderstand. They are also marked by an increase in a liberal
approach to politics, economics, and morality, although this claim is
disputed.

Difference of Filinnials from Millennials

According to the survey of a global study called, The Truth About the Youth, Fillinials
differ from other countries’ Millennials when it comes to:
1. a. Closeness to family (83 percent of Filipino youths rely heavily on their
parents for advice on adulthood) it was also found out that this generation live
with their parents longer than the previous generations.)
b. Activeness on social media; and
c. Perception on social responsibilities
These differences steam from the fact that the unique history and economic, political,
and social conditions in the Philippines shaped the Filinnials.

2. 83 percent of Filipino youths rely heavily on their parents for advice on

adulthood
3. Filinnials value close family relationships
4. Filinnials are more active in social media and are more easily influenced by
peers.

basic traits are ascribed to the Filennials:

special- Millennials have been brought up to believe that they are “collectively,
vital to the nation and to their parents’ sense of purpose.” (Strauss and Howe,

sheltered-they have also been sheltered all of their lives. They have been
subjected to many forms of protection—or overprotection—since they were born

confident- Millennials are confident. They are happy and believe that they will be
successful in their lives. Strauss and Howe note that Millennials possess high
levels of trust and optimism

team-oriented- Millennials are team-oriented; many grew up playing soccer and

other sports that emphasized teamwork. They place a high value on friendship
and maintain networks of friends near and far

conventional- Millennials are conventional in attitudes and behaviors. Strauss

and Howe comment that they take pride in their improving behavior
pressured- In 1997, Deborah Jones, a Canadian journalist, dubbed Millennials
“The Sunshine Generation,” due to their happy, optimistic nature. However, as
Jung once remarked, “The brighter the sun, the darker the shadow,” and the
Millennials do have a shadow side. It is most apparent when considering the
pressure they feel to get ahead, to be successful, to take advantage of
opportunities and to avoid taking risks

achieving- They are known to be of many achievements as youngsters. These

can be associated with their being proactive in life.

Globalization furthered the gap between generations. The moral convictions and ways
of dealing with moral dillemas were faced differently by different generations.

compare responses to shared moral dilemmas of baby boomers and millennials.

Issue #1: SAME SEX MARRIAGE Baby boomers take an opposing view on this issue.
They don’t support this because, for them, marriage is between a man and a woman.
Supporting it will destroy the sanctity of marriage and a break of tradition
On the other hand, Millennials take an agreeable approach on this issue. They support
it as to that everyone, regardless of gender, must have the right of marriage. On the
Fillinials, tradition and upbringing may cause a different stance on this issue.

Issue #2: PRE-MARITAL SEX Baby boomers and Millennials have engaged in pre-
marital sex, but it’s the Millenials who are more accepting of it than Baby boomers,
according to a 2015 survey on Sexual Behaviours in America. In 1970s, 29% said
“nothing is wrong with it at all”. It increased to 42% by 1980s, 49% by 2000s, and 58%
between 2010 and 2012. On the Philippine setting, tradition, upbringing, and religious
views may differ the stance of Filinnials. However, POPCOM said that 30% of
youngsters ranging from 15 to 19 yrs old, have engaged in premarital sex by 2017.
Mostly of this is unprotected, thus, leading to higher teenage pregnancies in the country.
