OC EXAM STRATEGIES THINKING SKILLS - Detecting Reasoning Errors
You are asked to identify any flaws (errors) in the argument, which means that you must
explain why the conclusion does not follow correctly from the reasons which are given.
So, you need to be clear about what the conclusion is, and what reasons are meant to
support it. Ask yourself what main point the argument is trying to establish, and how
it tries to establish it. Then assess whether any conclusion is justified, based on the
reasons.

THINKING SKILLS - Detecting Reasoning Errors OC EXAM STRATEGIES
Only those students who attend the meeting at lunchtime today will be allowed to
go on the excursion to the museum next week.
Mia: “Jayden is going to the meeting today, so he’ll definitely be able to go on the excursion.”
Tyler: “Noah’s going to cricket practice at lunchtime today, so he won’t be able to go on the
excursion.”
A Mia only
B Tyler only
C Both Mia and Tyler
D Neither Mia nor Tyler
SOLUTION
We know that only students who attend the meeting at lunchtime will be allowed to go
on the excursion, but there may be other reasons why some of these students are not
able to go. So Mia’s reasoning is incorrect. Noah won’t be able to go to the meeting at
lunchtime today as he will be at cricket practice, so it is certain that he won’t be allowed
to go on the excursion. So Tyler’s reasoning is correct. The correct answer is option B.
STRATEGY
1. First, look for major errors in both of Mia and Tyler’s reasoning.
2. Eliminate the options that do not make sense, which is A and C.
3. Go back and check that Tyler’s reasoning makes sense or not.
4. B is the correct answer.
