Needles
US 3/3.25mm - 16-40” / 40-100 cm circular needle for collar and hem, plus additional needle(s)
for your preferred method of small circumference knitting for cuffs.
US 4/3.5mm - 16-40” / 40-100 cm circular needle for body, plus additional needle(s) for preferred
method of small circumference knitting for sleeves.
US 5/3.75mm - 24-40” / 60-100 cm circular needle (optional, for color work).
Note: the smaller needle should be 1 US needle size / 0.25 mm smaller than the gauge-size
needle when gauge is met.

Gauge
24 sts and 31 rnds = 4" / 10 cm in Stockinette Stitch on larger needles in the round, after blocking.
Please take time to check gauge in the round and add or subtract rounds as needed to
customize the fit of your sweater. You may need to go up a needle size for the colorwork yoke
section if you find that your tension changes as you work stranded knitting.

Finished Sizes

This sweater is designed to be worn with 0-2” / 0-5 cm of positive ease; pick the size that is closest
to 2” / 5 cm larger than your actual bust measurement or larger if you want more room. The
sample is shown in Size 4 with no ease. If you fall between sizes, you might want to go down
(instead of up) a size so it won’t be baggy.

Notes

The Night Forest Copyright 2020 by Casapinka 2

This sweater is knit from the top down in the round and requires no seaming. As such, it is
recommended to try on the sweater as you work to check the length(s). Unless specifically
directed to break a color of yarn, carry the unused colors loosely up the inside of the sweater to
save on yardage and ends to weave in. I designed this using “blendy” colors because I like that
vision for my night forest. You may want to try contrasting yarns for sharper definition – but do not
be afraid to experiment to make your own fantasy night forest!
Finally, you should strongly consider alternating any hand dyed yarns to prevent color
mismatches that may not be obvious until you are wearing them!

Short Row Shaping (optional)

The Night Forest Copyright 2020 by Casapinka 3

For those of you who are newer knitters, short row shaping is favored by some people to lift up
the back of your sweater. I am not a fan of short rows in sweaters (especially with colorwork in
the yoke) but that is personal. I feel that it flattens out the design on the yoke and I prefer it to be
curved, but this is entirely up to you.

Proceed Short Rows, or Yoke Section One if not doing Short Rows.

Short Rows
Please note that short rows appear asymmetric when knitting them because the BOR is off to the
side to prevent a center placed seam.
These short rows will be worked flat, back and forth, in rows, on the larger needle.
Short Row 1 (RS): K50 (52, 52, 54, 56, 58, 58)[60, 62, 64, 66, 68], W&T.
Short Row 2 (WS): Purl to BOR, sm, p20 (22, 22, 22, 24, 24, 24)[24, 26, 26, 28, 28], W&T.
Short Row 3: Knit to BOR, sm, knit to 5 sts before the previously wrapped st, W&T.
Short Row 4: Purl to BOR, sm, purl to 5 sts before the previously wrapped st, W&T.

Rep [Short Rows 3 & 4] 2 more times.

Short Row 9 (RS): Knit to BOR.

Note that the instructions for processing wrapped stitches can be found at the end of the
pattern before the schematic.

Next Rnd: Knit all sts, processing the wrapped sts as encountered.

Yoke Section One (Color B)

Change to larger needle if not already using it for SRs.

going up one needle size for their color work eliminates this problem.

All Sizes
Work in stockinette st (knit every rnd) in Color A until the Yoke measures 7.5 (7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 8.5,
8.5)[9.75, 10.75, 11, 11, 11.5]” / 19 (19, 19, 19, 19, 21.5, 21.5)[25, 27.5, 28, 28, 29] cm (or to desired
length) from the bottom of the collar when measured at the front center of the sweater. Then
proceed to the “Divide for Sleeves” section, below.

Divide for sleeves

Sleeve Divide Rnd: RM, k88 (95, 100, 107, 112, 121, 124)[130, 138, 152, 164, 174] back sts, place

Using Color A, continue to work in stockinette st until the Body measures 9.5” / 24 cm from the
underarm, or until the Body is 6” / 15 cm short of the desired total length (remembering that
added length will require additional yardage and blocking will likely add length.)

Processing Wrapped Stitches (for those who did short rows)

To process a wrapped stitch (for optional short rows) with the knit side facing: insert the RHN
under the wrap knitwise (as if to knit the wrap) and then into the wrapped stitch on the RHN and
knit the 2 sts together as per a k2tog.
