I. INTRODUCTION

What’s important to you? It’s a simple question – but one with profound

consequences for how you live your life. It’s a question that gets to the heart of your

values: things that motivate you and guide your decisions.

We may have many values, and different ones in different areas of our lives – for

example as individuals and members of families, groups and communities. These may

also overlap – and they may change over time.

Human society may not significantly sustain without values. Hence, it is

necessary to talk on the subject and bring about awareness of human values into the

modern society. There is no denying the fact that the present global society is facing a

lot of crises

If any ethics are primarily to help a person to live a just and righteous life with

him/her and in relation to others, ethics too is similarly oriented towards a righteous life.

But what are values and why are they important?

II. OBJECTIVES:

Aims are an end in themselves, and values are the product. For achieving any

goal or objective we devise certain methods to achieve it and when we are able to

achieve for reach the goal, we call it values. Thus, in this topic values are the results

that we actually obtain.

At the end of this topic, the learners will be able to:

a. define values;

b. identify the different sources values;

c. enumerate the different kinds of values; and

d. appreciate the need for value education.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF VALUES

IV. SUMMARY
V. CONCLUSION

You will continually form values throughout your life base on the people and

culture in your society. Values will shape the way that a society behaves. This

guarantees coexistence between the participants in the community.

Values will provide you with boundaries; it will indicate to you what is considered

right and what is considered wrong according to the society that you are living in. It will

suggest to you what is allowed, what is not allowed, what is illegal, what is desirable,

what is legitimate, or what is punishable. The only way you can positively function is by

a collective agreement, either explicit or implicit, that clarifies the rules in a way that

everybody knows and understands. Everyone will understand their boundaries.

According to T. W. Hippie, “Values are conscious or unconscious motivators and

justifiers of the actions and judgment”

Values are different for each person. These can be defined as ideas or beliefs

that a person holds desirable or undesirable. The variability in that statement is, first,

what a person could value, and second, the degree to which they value it.

Values may be specific, such as honoring one’s parents or owning a home or

they may be more general, such as health, love, and democracy. ‘Truth prevails”, “love

thy neighbor as yourself, “learning is good as ends itself are a few examples of general

values.
Individual achievement, personal happiness, and materialism are major values of

modem industrial society. It is defined as a concept of the desirable, an internalized

creation or standard of evaluation a person possesses. Such concepts and standards

are relatively few and determine or guide an individual’s evaluations of the many objects

encountered in everyday life.

Values are shared ideas on what is good versus bad, ethical versus unethical,

just versus unjust, reasonable versus unreasonable and the like.
