Math 9 4th Q (Module 1)

The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching trigonometric ratios to 9th grade mathematics students. It includes objectives, content standards, procedures, and learning resources. The lesson will illustrate the six trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, cotangent) and how to use a calculator to find them. Students will practice applying ratios to solve parts of right triangles. The teacher will demonstrate examples and have students work in groups to understand application problems from their textbook.

TEACHER’S ACTION LEARNER’S ACTION

A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting new Lesson (ELICIT)
I want a volunteer to draw a right triangle on
the board.

Very good. Based on the drawing, gives  Right triangle is a triangle in which one
characteristics of a right triangle. angle is a right angle.
 It has three sides, three vertices, and three
angles.
 The sum of the measure of interior angles
is 180° .

What is the measure of a right angle?  90°

Therefore, a right triangle is a triangle of three

sides, three vertices, and three angles where
the sum of the three interior angles is always
180° and one of the angles is 90° .
B. Establishing the purpose of the lesson or presenting example/instances of new lesson
(ENGAGE)
Consider the right triangle drawn above and
named it as right triangle XYZ.

Find a pair and write in each of your notebook
the answer.

Formative Assessment 1: Given the right

triangle XYZ, give the corresponding sides of
the angle β :
1. Side opposite to β 1. XY or z
2. Side adjacent to β 2. YZ or x
3. Hypotenuse 3. XZ or y
C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson (ENGAGE)
Let us now define the six trigonometric ratios.
Are you familiar with the abbreviation or
mnemonic SOH – CAH – TOA? SOH as in sine = opposite/hypotenuse
CAH as in cosine = adjacent/hypotenuse
TOA as in tangent = opposite/adjacent
Sine (sin), cosine (cos), and tangent (tan) are
the primary trigonometric ratios. Based on the
figure above, determine the

Reciprocals of the primary trigonometric ratios 3. tan β = =
are called secondary trigonometric ratios –

secondary trigonometric ratios of the right
triangle XYZ.

D. Discussing new concept and practicing new skill #1 (EXPLORE)
Since we already know the parts of a right
triangle, we will now solve the missing parts
of a right triangle using a calculator. But first,
we need to set our calculator on the degree (Students are setting their calculators into degree
mode. mode.)

In your module on page 3, the first example is

to determine x and α in the triangle shown
below.

48
° 6
x

α
4
 48° ,4 and 6
What are the given?  x and α
What is asked or the missing parts?  cosine
To solve for x, we will use the given. What do
you think the trigonometric ratio to be used?

Yes, we can use cosine if we use 6 or tangent

if it is 4.
Solution option 1:
adjacent x
cos 48 ° = =
hypotenuse 6
x = 6 cos 48 °
x = 6 (0.669)
x = 4.01 ≈ 4

Solution option 2:
opposite 4
tan 48 ° = =
adjacent x
tan 48 ° x = 4

1.112 None ma’am.
x = 3.59 ≈ 4

Any question on determining the value of x?

For finding α , recall that the sum of all anlges

in a triangle is 180° . Thus,
90 ° +48 ° +α =¿ 180°
α =¿ 180° −90 °−48 ° (Students form a small circle together with their
α =¿ 42° respective group to collaborate and later on, a
representative of each group will present their

group must understand examples on the book
and explain after five minutes to the class what
they learned. Group 1 will be assigned of the
example 2, group 2 for example 3, and group 3
for example 4.
E. Discussing new concept and practicing new skill #2 (EXPLORE)
The last topic for today is to solve angle using
trigonometric ratios. Let us look at the first
3
example, find θ if sin θ = .
5
Solution:
3
sin θ =
5
−1 3
θ = sin ( ) = 36.87° None ma’am.
5
Any question about finding the angle using
trigonometric ratios?

It is very important to use a calculator. With

your calculator, we want to transform the
measure of the angle in degrees/minutes form. 36° 52' 12”
From the example above, the measure of the
angle is θ=¿ 36.87° . In your calculator, press
D° M ' S =. What is the answer?

Very good. Since, there is still seconds in the (Students were collaborating to find the answer.)
answer, we need to convert 12” into minutes
using conversion factor. In your notebook,
convert 12” into minutes for five minutes with
your group.

(after five minutes) (Each representative write their answer.)

Time is up. In each group, pick a
representative to show your answer on the
board. The three representatives will write at
the same time on the board with their None ma’am.
respective area.

(I will check the students answer.) Based on

the conversion, the answer is 0.2’. Since 0.2’ <
1, therefore we will not add 1 to the 52’. So the
final answer is 36° 52' . Any question in writing
into degrees/minutes form?
F. Developing Mastery (EXPLAIN
Formative Assessment 3: Write each of the
following in degrees and minutes. Give
answers to the nearest minutes.
1. 178.56°
2. 73.79°
3. 158.5°
4. 92.71°
In answering, count 1 up to the last number. (Students will count up to the last person at the
back.)
Now, if your number is odd like 1, 3, 5 etc.,
you will answer the odd items. If even, answer
the even numbers only. Understood? Yes ma’am.

You can begin in answering now for five (Students are answering.)
minutes.

Let’s check your answer. 1. 178.56° = 178° 33' 36 ”=178 ° 34 '

2. 73.79° = 73° 47' 24 ”=73 ° 47 '
3. 158.5° = 158° 30' 0 ”=158 ° 30'
4. 92.71° = 92° 42' 36 ”=92° 43 '
Very good. You already understand in writing
degrees/minutes form.
G. Finding practical applications of concepts & skills in daily living ( ELABORATE)
Situation: A flagpole is in front of a 24-meter
building. The shadows of the building and the
flagpole on the level ground are 4 meters and
1.5 meters, respectively. Mark the triangle
form of the building as right triangle ABC and
find angle A in nearest minutes.
Solution:
4
tan A =
24
A = 9° 27 ' 44 ”=9 ° 28 '
H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson ( ELABORATE)
What do you learned about our lesson for I learned about the six trigonometric ratios using
today? a right triangle.

Give me the six trigonometric ratios. Sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, and
tangent.
Very good. Just practice solving in your home
using a calculator.
I. Evaluating Learning ( EVALUATION)
Direction: Compute the value of the angle to
the nearest degree.
1. sin β=0.758
2. tan β=3.143
3. cos β=0.149

Let’s check your answer. 1. sin β=0.758 = 49°

2. tan β=3.143 = 72°
3. cos β=0.149 = 81°
I. Additional activities for application or remediation (EXTEND)
For your assignment, based on the practical 24 x
application, mark the right triangle XYZ form
=
4 1.5
by the flagpole and find the height and angle 4x = 36
X. x=9
1.5
tan X =

X = 9° 27' 44 ”=9 ° 28 '
