RNC Presentation

The RNC 3810 star topology consists of an Ericsson cabinet housing up to three subracks including a main subrack and optionally up to five extension subracks. The main subrack interconnects all other subracks and contains switches, processors for control and user plane processing, and timing signals. Extension subracks interface toward remote radio bases and contain switches and processors. Hardware components communicate via inter-subrack links and boards provide functions like switching, processing, and interface termination.

RNC 3810 star topology

RNC 3810 with two cabinets

Hardware Components
The RNC 3810 consists of three major parts:
• Cabinet
• Interface Connection Field (ICF)
• Subrack
Cabinet
The cabinet is an Ericsson BYB501 cabinet housing up to three subracks and an ICF
Interface Connection Field
The Interface Connection Field (ICF) is the external point of connection to the RNC
for transmission cables and O&M equipment. The ICF is located at the bottom of the cabinet,

The ICF contains a number of connection modules where each is

connected to a single Exchange Terminal Board (ETB). In other words,
there is a one-to-one relation between ETB and connection module. ETBs.
The ICF also contains connection modules for local Ethernet connection to
O&M equipment.

Relation between ICF and ETB

Subrack
The generic 19” subrack has a back plane with 28 board slots. Two slots are dedicated for the Switch Control
Boards (SCB). The remaining 26 slots are generalpurpose slots for other board types. A Dummy Board (DB) is
inserted at an unused position. The DB is included to conform to Electromagnetic Compatibility requirements, and
to increase the efficiency of the subrack cooling. Each subrack contains two temperature-controlled fans.

Main Subrack
An RNC 3810 always includes a Main Subrack. The Main Subrack interconnects all other subracks in the RNC
through Inter-Subrack Links (ISL).
The Main Subrack includes all functions of an Extension Subrack as well as
common functions to the RNC. Functions of the Main Subrack include the
following:
• Non-blocking ATM switch
• ISLs towards the Extension Subracks
• Processors for user plane processing and control plane processing
• Processors for centralized node processing
• Timing signals for the node
• Local Ethernet termination for element management
• Transmission interfaces for termination of all interfaces:
Mur interface towards OSS-RC
lu interface towards the Core Network
Iur interface towards other RNCs
lub interface towards the RBSs

Note:Unused slots must always contains a dummy board or dummy slots for securing
correct cooling airflow to units operation
Extension Subrack
The Extension Subrack, interfaces towards the RBSs. The number of
Extension Subracks in a node is from 0 to 5. The functions of an Extension
Subrack
comprises of the following:
• Non-blocking ATM switch
• ISLs(Inter Subrack Link) towards the Main Subrack
• Processors for user plane processing and control plane processing.
• Transmission interfaces for termination of the lub interface towards the RBSs
SCB, Switch Control Board
The SCB contains hardware that provides the following:
• ATM switch core functionality
• Circuits for System Clock distribution
• Interfaces that allow connection of four ISLs at configurable rates
• Interfaces providing connection of fan supervision signals
• Power filtering and distribution
The two outer positions in a subrack are always reserved for SCBs.
SXB, Switch eXtension Board
The SXB contains hardware that provides the following:
• Interfaces that allow connection of four ISLs at configurable rates
The SXB is only used in the main subrack.
TUB, Timing Unit Board
The TUB is used in the Main Subrack. It provides the following:
• Generation of reference timing signals • Regeneration of reference timing
signals
• Stabilization of reference timing signals
• Handling of node synchronization procedures
• System Clock oscillator
• GPS connection, e.g. for synchronization input
GPB, General purpose Processor Board
The GPB operates as a Main Processor (MP). It contains and executes the main parts of the RNC software.
The GPB is equipped with Ethernet and asynchronous serial interfaces accessible from the board front panel.
The GPB also contains a flash disc drive.

SPB, Special purpose Processor Board

The SPB is equipped with a number of Special purpose Processors (SP) with different application software
modules. The SPs perform time-critical user-plane processing and control signalling.

ETB, Exchange Terminal Board

ET-M4, 2 ports/board, 155 Mbit/s, STM-1/OC3c/STS-3c ATM full rate (VC4).Optical interface.
ET-MC41, 1 port/board, double-size module (occupying 2 board slots), 155 Mbit/s, STM-1/VC12, OC-3/VT-
1.5. Channelized STM-1 with 84 T1 or 63 E1 ATM or STM streams or ATM/STM mix. MSP 1+1 support,
Circuit emulation support, fractional support, IMA support. Optical interface.
♦Hub structure
. One main subrack
. 0 - 5 extension subracks
♦Inter Subrack Links (ISLs)
. Up to 15 m with electrical twisted pair
♦1 + 1 redundancy on ISL
♦Fully redundant HW
♦Distributed processing in clusters
♦Capacity maintained at single HW failure
Element Manager(Ethernet Cable)

Hyperterminal(Serial Cable)
