Nuclear is the future

Of all the technologies available to produce the electricity
needed to sustain our way of life, the nuclear option pro-
vides the best blend of economic viability and practicality
without compromising the environment. Nuclear is the fu-
ture – but only with a total focus on safety and economy.

Total solutions for reactor chemistry

Canberra solutions cover a wide spectrum of power
reactor operation. Radiochemistry systems and software
are designed to provide superior quality measurements
in minimal time with minimal operator training. Systems
are designed to streamline plant operation while provid-
ing the right information at the time and place that it is
needed. Radiochemistry solutions not only provide
sample measurement data, but also provide seamless
chemistry data management and effluent management –
raising efficiency and accuracy by eliminating manual
processing of information.

Protecting the nuclear worker

Canberra’s health physics product range covers all aspects of
nuclear plant operation. From hand-held instruments, whole body
contamination monitors and in vivo counting to the software that
processes worker dose records, radiation work permits and
access control – Canberra offers the total, integrated solution.

But it takes more than world class equipment to realize true

economies. Economy comes from focus on the core mission – and
a full partnership with Canberra lets the plant operator focus on
the core mission of power generation. Integrating a suite of
Canberra services into the operation can relieve the facility
operator of system maintenance and management efforts.

Radiation monitoring systems for total protection

Nuclear facilities require perpetual monitoring to ensure that workers and the public
are provided with timely warning of any radiological hazard. Canberra Radiation
Monitoring Systems (RMS) provide that total vigilance for in-plant work areas,
process effluent pathways and site boundaries. Systems are specially engineered to
our customer’s most exacting standards (including safety grade 1E qualification) and
custom engineered precisely to the needs of the application – ranging from compre-
hensive solutions for nuclear power through
simple systems for PET Centers and Universities.

In the plant…
Area monitoring is the first line of defense for the
nuclear worker. For continuous monitoring of a
room or area, Canberra offers a range of gamma,
alpha and beta monitors for fixed locations.
Patented* technologies reduce radon interference
for lower false alar ms and
dramatically improve dynamic
range for better performance.

Process gas systems afford

continuous, monitoring from
process vent stacks for tritium, iodine, noble gas and/or par-
ticulate releases. Using our unique gain stabilization and
our patented* “time to count” facility, these systems provide
exceptional operation over a wide temperature range and a
wide dynamic range. These technologies can also be
coupled with specially designed isokinetic nozzles to
improve sensitivity and reliability. Liquid monitors are also
available in on-line, off-line and in-line configurations. Assuring regulatory
compliance, Canberra’s advanced analytical spectroscopy software provides
seamless integration for real-time isotopic identification and reporting.

…on the perimeter, or anywhere!

Canberra perimeter monitors provide the same patented technology for constant
monitoring and alarm of radiation levels along site boundaries. Canberra RMS
instrumentation is designed to withstand the harsh outdoor environment and
requires little or no maintenance for continuous operation. For emergency situations,
mobile RMS capabilities offer Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to enable
rapid response minimizing worker hazards while providing real-time and timely
assessment of hazards directly at the scene of the incident.

Tie it together
Widely distributed radiation monitoring capabilities need a
centralized means to display and store RMS information – and
direct control information to individual instruments. Canberra’s
Radiological Assessment, Display and Control System
(RADACS) software provides comprehensive monitoring and
control capabilities in a highly secure, multi-user database
environment. RADACS operates with today’s up-to-date digital
instruments as well as legacy analog types.

Whatever the RMS application, Canberra can tailor a system to

bring you complete piece of mind.

Maintaining the highest standard

of defensibility
It is becoming ever more important to carefully
monitor the environment to ensure that contamination
is not present – or to characterize contamination that
may be present. Yet, the environmental lab is
challenged to reduce cost – while maintaining the
highest standards of accuracy, chain-of-custody and
defensibility.

Today’s lab not only needs accurate, economical

measurements, but also needs to be able to defend
its results to a high legal standard. Measurement
results represent the suitability of an area for public
inhabitation or drive worker protection measures. In
this climate, the measurement, quality assurance and
record keeping must all operate in concert – as any individual measurement might
be subject to legal challenge.

Canberra has long been the leader in spectros-

copy technology. Breakthrough detector
technologies enhance counting efficiency while
improving spectral resolution for both gamma
and alpha spectroscopy. Digital Signal Process-
ing (DSP) based nucleonics provides ultimate
stability. Time-proven spectral analysis
algorithms make sense of the most complex
spectra while unique mathematical calibration
software simplifies calibration and enhances
accuracy. Reliable sample changer systems for
gamma spectroscopy and alpha beta counting provide around the clock, unattended
measurements. Computer controlled vacuum and superior detector technology
provide simplified operation, economies and better accuracy in Canberra’s alpha
spectroscopy applications.

Focus on the measurements – not the systems

But the greatest single factor in economy and defensibility lies in
system software design. Canberra software is designed for true
operator simplicity. Software automatically ensures that routine QA
checks are performed and automatically keeps records of all system
activities – sample counts, calibrations, QA checks – as well as when
they were performed and by whom. Unique database facilities
make it simple to retrieve and review data – even years after the
measurement – to respond to questions
or legal challenges.

Elevating the relationship with Canberra

to full partnership provides access to a
range of services to help the lab operator
focus on the measurements – not the systems.
Comprehensive equipment maintenance, expert data
review, database administration, procedure preparation
and training – all aspects that Canberra can provide to
enhance your productivity and quality.

Cleaning Up Our
Nuclear Legacy
Reclaiming the land from past contamination.

Your Partner for World Class Performance

Capabilities Profile – Page 11

Changing times
In the early days of the nuclear industr y, limited
knowledge, marginal equipment designs and the world
climate at the time prevented nuclear materials from being
handled properly. Today those materials need to be
reclaimed and managed safely. Even if this had not
occurred, operationally contaminated sites that have
passed their useful lives need to be returned to safe and
natural states.

The challenges of the Decommissioning and Decontami-

nation (D&D) and Environmental Restoration (ER)
operations are many. Minimal records adds to the long
list of unknowns the cleanup team will encounter.
Contamination may be encountered in unknown locations,
with unknown radionuclide compositions and at unknown
levels. Radioactive materials are sometimes encountered in
combination with other hazardous materials, complicating
the cleanup further.

Adhering to ALARA principals

Canberra offers a full range of equipment and characteriza-
tion services to support the D&D operation. First class ra-
dioprotection gear for the radiation worker – portable MCAs,
dosimeters, field deployable alpha beta counters and con-
tinuous monitors for alpha in air and gamma fields – ensure
that characterization activities can be undertaken with
adherence to ALARA principles.

Precisely locating contamination is fast and cost-effective

with the Cartogam Imaging System. Advanced measure-
ment technology is coupled with state-of-the-art imaging to
show exactly where contamination exists.

Once contamination is located, characterization is simplified by use of

Canberra’s patented* In Situ Object Counting System (ISOCS) which
provides accurate, nuclide specific assay results for large and unusually
shaped objects at varied distances.

For the remediation process itself,

Canberra offers a range of assay
systems that provide nuclide specific
analysis of soil, debr is, rubble,
surfaces and equipment. Remediated
materials can be packaged and
measured in a variety of containers –
boxes, casks, drums as appropriate –
and quickly characterized for off-site
shipment.

Partnership with Canberra again means services to ensure success – project

planning, project management, expert equipment operators and expert data
review – all intended to let the remediation team focus on remediation, not
the instruments.

Managing
Nuclear Waste
From spent reactor fuel to remediated materials to
fuel cycle process waste – the safe, economical
management of radioactive waste is of paramount
concern in the industry.

Controlling and managing

waste issues
Properly controlling and managing waste issues
is essential to our nuclear future – an environ-
ment free of legacy contamination.

In the Waste Management

(WM) field, Canberra’s
partnership philosophy is
extended from equipment
into a full range of waste
measurement and management services. Recognizing early on
the need to couple first class equipment with first class operation
– Canberra developed a comprehensive set of waste character-
ization capabilities. Today, Canberra can supply mobile
characterization systems along with a complete team of expert
operators, scientists, and QA personnel dedicated to the
complete job – characterizing waste material in a high quality,
defensible manner.

Qualified systems and capabilities

Canberra was the first commercial vendor whose
mobile Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) systems and
services were qualified to meet the US DOE Waste
Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Waste Acceptance
Criterion (WAC). We assembled a world class team
of scientists and technicians – with an aggregate of
hundreds of years of experience – to develop and
implement the characterization program. Around the
world today, nuclear facility operators rely on
Canberra’s equipment or complete assay services to
meet their waste measurement needs.

The technologies involved are diverse and vast.

Screening counters quickly evaluate small contain-
ers for gamma activity. Gamma spectroscopy based
systems can be deployed where nuclide specific
results are needed. Where Special Nuclear Materials
(SNM) may be involved, assay systems can include
neutron and/or gamma assay technologies. Systems
can range from small transportable systems for low
volume waste producers to large scale, automated
systems with conveyor based container handling.
Mobile NDA provides a cost-effective alternative to
building a large waste characterization facility.

The Canberra solution

Regardless of the system – or services
package, you can be assured that the
Canberra solution is backed by the
science and quality commitment of the
very best.

Safeguarding
the Future
Our safe nuclear future depends on a
never-ending vigilance to prevent the diversion
of nuclear material into the wrong hands.

Your Partner for World Class Performance

Capabilities Profile – Page 17

Materials protection, control

and accountability
Rogue states and terrorist organizations
have made no secret of their desire to
divert nuclear technology from peaceful,
economic uses into Weapons of Mass
Destruction (WMD). The matrix of
nuclear non-proliferation treaties is
being augmented by efforts on all
levels – international through local – to
detect nuclear materials that may be
illegally stored or transported.

Canberra has collaborated for many

years with leading scientists from US
and international safeguards agencies
to develop the technologies needed
for treaty verification. This results in a wide array of products to facilitate material
protection, control and accountability. The Canberra LEGe detector, InSpector 2000
and U-Pu/IMCA software technologies have revolutionized safeguards inspections –
allowing for rapid material inventory verifica-
tion. The Canberra Active Well Coincidence
Counter (AWCC) and similar systems
provide this same level of technology for
neutron emitting materials. These systems
have been designed for operation with
minimal inspector training and with minimal
disruption to ongoing nuclear facility
operation.

Monitoring material inventories

Complementing these technologies are
electronic seals, tags and tamper proof
surveillance cameras to ensure that material
inventories are monitored and controlled on
a continuous basis. Tag and seal technology prevents unauthorized removal or
tampering with material while camera systems keep a watchful eye to detect
any intrusion.

Additional measures
Sensitive access points to nuclear facilities as well
as customer and border control stations need to
be prepared for the possible movement of material
that may have escaped other safeguards
measures. The Canberra SYREN portal/vehicle
monitor systems can detect gamma and/or
neutron emitted material being smuggled out
of a nuclear facility. Hand-held technologies allow
for quick surveys of suspect containers and
individuals.

Only with full deployment of such non-proliferation

and counter-proliferation strategies can we fully
enjoy the positive benefits of nuclear technologies
for power generation, medicine and science.

Protecting the Nuclear Worker

and the Public
Health Physics...
One of the most important aspects
of nuclear operation.

Your Partner for World Class Performance

Capabilities Profile – Page 19

Minimizing or eliminating exposure

Nuclear workers can be exposed to ionizing
radiation that may be harmful. In an accident
situation, exposure to members of the general
public could also occur. Minimizing or eliminat-
ing that exposure – to the ideal standard of
ALARA – is the objective of the health physics
program.

Canberra solutions for health physics

applications are as varied as the possible
sources of radiation. First, the company provides an extensive array of portable,
hand-held survey devices – designed to quickly and accurately measure dose rate.
Patented technology extends the accuracy and dynamic range; simplifying operation
and broadening the application of a single device. Augmenting these lines
are unique, electronic personal dosimetry products that provide dose
assessments for the individual worker.

Filter and swipe samples

For routine collection of samples
from lapel filters, fixed head air sam-
pler filters and swipes, Canberra’s
leading Alpha Beta product family
can be supplemented with our
patented Sample Management
Software (SMS). SMS utilizes sample
bar coding technology to provide
flawless chain-of-custody record keeping to ensure the integrity of health
physics records.

Direct personnel monitoring

Personnel monitoring programs often include hand-and-foot and
whole body contamination monitors. Canberra monitors are
designed for maximum physical coverage of the person as well
as easy maintenance to prevent costly downtime. Canberra is
also the world’s foremost supplier of Whole Body Counters for
in vivo spectroscopy – ranging from the FASTSCAN screening
counter to ultra-sophisticated systems to detect minute
quantities of uranium or plutonium in the lung.

Tying it all together

Our HIS-20 software accumulates dose records on individual workers and
performs Radiation Work Permit generation and access control within
nuclear facilities. Our PADS system – run as a service for major electric
generating facilities – shares health physics records on
transient nuclear workers.

Whatever the application, you can count on your partnership

with Canberra to provide you with world class products –
combined with extensive training, service and support – to
ensure a successful program.

air monitoring – plus they play critical
roles in systems for the space program
and physics research.

Canberra also serves the nuclear physics research community with

unique capabilities in special detectors such as segmented planar and
coaxial types packaged in single, clover or cluster geometries. These use
exclusive encapsulation and segmentation technology available no
where else in the world. Neutron detection capability is provided by our
range of 3He detectors.

Digital Signal Processing

Canberra was the first company to deploy Digital Signal Processing
(DSP) technology for gamma spectroscopy in a manner that provided
demonstrable performance benefits – higher countrate throughput, better
resolution and better stability. Today, Canberra DSP products lie at the
heart of all gamma spectroscopy systems described in the previous pages – plus
they facilitate numerous applications in research, materials analysis and education.

World class spectroscopy system

At the center of Canberra’s spectroscopy applica-
tions lies the Genie 2000 spectroscopy software
suite. More than an MCA and analysis package,
Genie 2000 is designed for integration into the
comprehensive systems that provide streamlined,
application-specific user interfaces and integration
into site wide systems and procedures. Yet, with
all the sophistication, it excels in the simplest spec-
troscopy applications found in education and
training labs.

These are not only the tools with which the systems
are built – but also the tools that are building the future of the nuclear industry.
Without ongoing research into new nuclear technologies, there is no future. Without
nuclear engineering and physics
education, there are no skilled
personnel to run the industry in the
future. Canberra’s commitment
to these applications is our
investment in the long term health
and strength of our industry.
