Muskan Aanand - 19110016 - LEH

The document analyzes climate data for Ladakh to determine design strategies to increase comfort. It finds that temperatures are below comfort ranges for most of the year. The objectives are to increase solar heat gain through strategies like reducing shading and increasing thermal insulation. This will help promote heat gain and reduce heat loss. Inferences include orienting buildings southward, using circular or square floor plans to increase insulation, reducing wind flow with garages, using pitched roofs, and including strategies like drapes and stables inside to further reduce heat loss.

Climate Consultant Analysis Ladakh

Muskan Aanand 19110016

We are following the Ashrae Standard 55 and Handbook of Fundamentals Model for
analysis.

OBJECTIVES:

● From the temperature ranges chart , we find that the temperature is below the
summer and winter comfort for most of the year. So, we should be aiming to
bring this in the comfort range which means increasing the solar heat gain and
also reducing the heat loss to the surroundings.
● In the Monthly Diurnal Averages chart, we can observe that the solar radiation is
almost near the comfort zone and generally higher , hence this can be used to
maximize solar heat gain from radiation.
● The sky is also mostly clear and there are very less overcast days, which makes
it easy for the solar gain to be increased.
● From the Wind velocity range chart, the objective is to reduce the Wind velocity
so as to minimize the heat loss.
● According to the Dry Bulb X Relative Humidity chart, we can see that the
temperature here is mostly below 0 and only in monsoon is it above 0, and thus
we need to increase the overall temperature for the building.
● Also, according to the Sun Shading Chart, we can get the overview, that shading
devices are not needed particularly, because we intend to increase the heat in the
building envelope to increase the comfort. Some amount of sun shading is
appreciated though to avoid the sun glare.
● Now overall the major objectives are -
1. Promote Heat Gain by reducing shading, use passive strategies to
increase the heat gain, by trapping heat in the building envelope
2. Reduce heat loss by decreasing exposed surface area, increasing thermal
capacity, resistance, increasing the buffer spaces, surface absorptivity and
also decreasing air exchange rate

INFERENCES AND DESIGN STRATEGIES -

● The orientation of the building preferably should be South facing.

● Lesser floor area can adopt a circular form .
● The floor area can also be squarish with floors above to increase the heat
insulation in building envelope.
● To reduce the wind flow, one can place the storage and garages on wither sides
of the building to insulate it.
● Pitched roof for wind and snow protection.
● Windows without shadings also appreciated to increase solar gain.
● Inside the building draperies, insulating materials can be used to reduce heat
loss.
● Stables in the ground floor to warm the building from animal heat from beneath.
● Low mass tightly sealed well insulated construction to allow rapid buildup of heat.
