COURSE RATIONALE

(OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY)

The desire to know God is innate in a believer’s heart. There is no doubt that
even a pre-believer wants to understand the traditional God whom he/she knows from
religion. Who is God? Where did He come from? What are His characteristics? Does
He allow the righteous to suffer? What is He doing in the unfolding of the history?
Does He offer hope in this time of uncertainty, turmoil and corruption? These are just
some questions that wrestle a person’s mind concerning God.

Though the society-at-large have a preconceive notion on how God is like, true
knowledge of Him evade the many. The same might be said true both to members and
leaders in the church context. The present situation calls for a more biblically literate
Bible-believing believer who can penetrate the various segments of his/her community
to herald God’s unfading and unfailing Word. The lessons He gives from the Bible in
the past certainly can affect the present as well as the future.

It is tantamount that the place to start to know God and know about Him is the
Bible. This course, Old Testament Survey, is designed to give an overview of the 39
books of the Old Testament, know their general background, apply valuable lessons to
one’s life and share God’s timeless truths to those who need a better understanding of
Him. Interwoven all throughout this testament is God’s faithfulness to His unfaithful
people. He is the ever-present help of His people no matter what.

There is no substitute for God’s Word really touching one’s life rather than the
mere intellect. His revelation is more than enough to ascribe to Him the worship and
thanksgiving that is due Him. As you survey the wide spectrum of the Old Testament,
may you not only know about God. May you know Him deeper and may your love for
Him grow.
