INTRODUCTION:

The purpose of this document is to provide a detailed guide for the Short circuit Calculation and Protection Relay
setting coordination study to achieve safe operation of the SUPER CEMENT  11/0.400kV substation in
coordination with the upstream ADDC substation’s protection relay settings.

O/C and E/F relay setting of incomers are calculated considering that incoming feeder fault current.

O/C and E/F relay setting of Transformers Feeders are calculated considering that transformer full load and fault
current.

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this study is to provide a protective relay coordination study report for SUPER CEMENT
11/0.400kV substation‐ fed from ADDC substation

CONSIDERATIONS AND ASSUPTIONS:

> The Protective relay settings are calculated based on the short circuit currents. The relays are set to operate
such as to isolate the fault circuit from the electrical distribution system.

> The Fault current, CT ratio and relay settings at the feeding end substation are received from M/s.ADDC ‐ T&P
Department

> Protective relays details of the respective feeders are taken from the single line diagram (approved by ADDC) /
vendor drawing documents

> Single phase and three phase fault currents are calculated through the entire network up to the transformers
end. The respective fault current in each feeder are taken for the calculation.

> Over curent and earth fault protection tripping timing of all 11kV I/C and O/G feeders are coordinated with the
Upstream Primary substation.

Following assumptions are made while calculating the relay setting study.

> Upstream substation feeders feeds to SUPER CEMENT 11/0.400kV substation  incomer feeder 1 & incomer‐2 in
loop with the other S/S and all the incoming & outgoing feeders are co‐ordinated with the upstream feeders.

> The parameters mentioned in the relay setting schedule are based on the relay manufacturer's manual.

> Ensured from the operating time that any fault in down stream, first down stream feeders will trip. If down
stream breakerfails to trip then immediate nearest upstream breaker will trip, if that also fails to trip, then only
the upstream feeder will trip.

> IEC curves have been considered for relay setting and cordination. The operating time of the relays using IEC
curves calculated by using the following formulas.

Standard inverse :   t = 0.14 * TMS / [(I/Is)0.02 ‐ 1]

Very inverse :  t = 13.5 * TMS / [(I/Is) ‐ 1]
2
Extremely inverse :  t = 80 * TMS / [(I/Is) ‐ 1 ]

Long  inverse :  t = 120 * TMS / [(I/Is) ‐ 1 ]

Where,
t = Tripping time
I = Fault current
Is = Inverse time over current pickup
TMS = Time multiplier setting
I/Is = Plug setting multiplier‐PMS

> The selection of the type of curve ( SI, VI or EI ) is based on the best available option for propper coordination.
So Standard Inverse method is selected for the Protection Relay setting Coordination

PHILOSOPHY:

O/C and E/F Relay

Over current and earth fault protections at distribution substation are coordinated with the upstream ADDC
substation feeder relays.

Fault in any one of the down stream substation, in case 11kV Transformer feeder breaker fails to operate then
Fault in any one of the down stream substation in case 11kV Transformer feeder breaker fails to operate then
the respective Substation's 11kV incomers will operate with the time grading.

In case 11kV incomers circuit breaker fail to operate, then next immediate nearest upstream breaker will operate
with time grading. In worst case all the downstream breakes fails to operate then only the Upstream ADDC 11kV
Substation feeder breakers will operate with the time grading

3. SHORT CIRCUIT CALCULATION
SIEMENS PSS SINCAL Short Circuit Manual
Introduction to Short Circuit

1. Introduction to Short Circuit

PSS SINCAL Short Circuit is an effective tool for illustrating, simulating and evaluating electrical
transmission and distribution networks. PSS SINCAL Short Circuit calculates the electrical values
for current, voltage and power with one- two- and three-phase short circuits according to:

● VDE or IEC
● ANSI or IEEE
● Initial load analogous to VDE or IEC
● Engineering Recommendation G74

This manual contains the following chapters:

● Short Circuit Calculation Method

● Example for Short Circuit

Short Circuit Procedure

Short circuit calculations are always active. This means that you can always enter data for the short
circuit without any special settings.

Symmetrical Faults

The following steps are necessary:

● Define and set parameters in the short circuit procedure in the short circuit calculation settings
● Switch the short circuit calculations ON in the network level data
● Set parameters for the source voltage in the network level data (if required by the procedure)

Asymmetrical Faults

To calculate asymmetrical faults correctly, first switch ON the Asymmetrical Model in the
Calculation Settings.

Then the following steps are possible:

● Enter negative and zero-phase sequence data for the network elements
● Define the phases for the network elements
● Define the coils for the transformers
● Enter neutral-point impedances

Network Calculations

The speed of the network calculations depends primarily on four factors:

● Network size
● Number of regulated elements
● Calculation type
● Available storage capacity

Load Flow for the Bias

In PSS SINCAL Short Circuit, PSS SINCAL calculates the load flow to determine the initial load.
This is only done, however, if the short circuit is not calculated as previously loaded analogous to
VDE or IEC.

Displaying the Networks for the Calculations

For a detailed description of how PSS SINCAL displays the networks in the calculations, see the
chapter Network Display in the Input Data Manual.

2. Short Circuit Calculation Method

Short circuit calculations simulate short circuits in an electrical network that has rated series and
cross admittances and rated electromotive generator voltages. The equipment determines the
series and cross admittances. PSS SINCAL searches for currents and node-point voltages when
there are short circuits at nodes.

The program uses symmetrical. The sum of the currents flowing to the node is equal to the sum of
the leakage. Thus, the node equations produce the following set of linear equations:

Y I

Y … Node admittance matrix

… Vector for node potential
I … Vector for feed current at respective node

The main diagonal links are equal to the sum of the admittances that lead to the specific node
point. The secondary diagonal links are equal to the negative value of the cross admittance
between two nodes.

In a generator node, Current I is the product of the generator source voltage and generator
admittance. At the fault node, Current I is equal to the fault current. For other nodes Current I is
equal to zero.

To calculate node power, you need to know Current I on the right side of the set of equations. It is
assumed that the source voltages of the generator are known. Each generator can have a different
source voltage. Thus compensating currents would already flow before the short circuit occurs.

2.1 Calculation without Considering Compensating Currents

Under normal operating conditions, the generators are so excited by the short circuits that the
voltage is equal to the source voltage and that no compensating current is flowing. (PSS SINCAL
does not consider positive- and negative-phase-sequence shunt impedances such as line
capacities or consumers).

PSS SINCAL uses the return-feeding method to solve the set of equations in two parts.
PSS SINCAL attaches a generator that has the same, but inverse voltage as in the fault-free
situation at the fault location. The voltage distributions from the fault-free situation and the amount
of return feeding are added together to determine the voltage distribution for the fault. The voltage
at the fault node is zero.

PSS SINCAL determines voltage distribution for the error-free condition in the following manner:

April 2010 3
9 of 34
PSS SINCAL Short Circuit Manual SIEMENS
Short Circuit Calculation Method

One generator is assigned an internal source voltage of 1 p.u. (per unit = 100 % voltage = rated
voltage). The other generators are eliminated from the calculations. Since all line capacities and
non-motor cross impedances need not be considered, only cross impedances from transformers
whose rated transformer ratio do not agree with the ratio of the rated network voltage remain. Since
these shunt impedances create a resonance circuit, one p.u. of internal source voltage for the
generator does not produce any current. The only current that determines the node charges for the
transformers is the current inside the resonance circuit.

The first partial solution determines the charges at the node for the initial load Vlk. Since the
source voltage must be stated at the later fault location, all the voltages must be multiplied by
VT/Vlk.

The voltage distribution from the return feeding Vk is the voltage at the network nodes, assuming
there is a source voltage at the fault location and the source voltage of the generators is zero.

The voltage distribution is calculated by solving the equation:

I Y 1

2.2 Calculation Considering Compensating Currents

Before the short circuit, the generators are so excited at the later fault location that the voltage is
equal to the source voltage and that no compensating current will flow. PSS SINCAL considers line
capacities and transformer active and reactive power demand.

PSS SINCAL then uses the return-feeding method to solve the equation in two parts.
PSS SINCAL attaches a generator that has the same, but inverse voltage as in the fault-free
situation at the fault location. The voltage distributions from the fault-free situation and the amount
of return feeding are added together to determine the voltage distribution for the fault. The voltage
at the fault node is zero.

Earlier load flow calculations determine the voltage distribution of the network in the error-free
condition.

The node-point potentials for the initial load Vlk are the same as the voltage distribution from the
load flow. In addition, at the subsequent fault location, the load voltage will act as the source
voltage.

The voltage distribution from the return feeding Vk is the voltage at the network nodes, assuming
there is a source voltage at the fault location and the source voltage of the generators is zero.

The voltage distribution is calculated by solving the equation:

I Y 1

The network currents are calculated from the differences in charge at the nodes and from the
impedance between the nodes.
