1. The mean tensile strength of a synthetic fiber is an important quality characteristic that is
of interest to the manufacturer. A random sample of 16 specimens is selected, and their
tensile strengths are determined. Determine mean, median, mode, range, standard
deviation as well as variance of the random sample.

a. Mean
Mean can be calculated from formula below:

𝑛
1
𝑥̅ = ∑ 𝑥𝑖
𝑛
1
1
𝑥̅ = ∗ (797.83)
16
𝑥̅ = 𝟒𝟗. 𝟖𝟔

b. Median
Median is the middle value when the samples are arranged in increasing or decreasing
order. In order to find the median value, the 16 specimens need to be arranged. After
arranging the specimen’s data, the middle values are located between 49.72 and 49.86.
Median for even amount of data can be calculated using this formula below:

𝑥1 + 𝑥2
𝑀𝑒𝑑 =
2
Where:
x1 = first middle number
x2 = second middle number

So, the median value is:

49.72 + 49.86
𝑀𝑒𝑑 = = 𝟒𝟗. 𝟕𝟗
2

c. Mode
Mode is the value that occurs most often in a set of samples. On the example question,
those data are varied and there is no data that occurs most often. So, there is no mode
on that list of data.

d. Range
Range is defined as the difference between the largest and smallest values. On the
example question, the largest value is 52.16 and the smallest value is 46.94. So, the
range is:
𝑅𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 = 52.16 − 46.94
𝑅𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 = 𝟓. 𝟐𝟐

e. Standard Deviation
Deviation is the positive square root of the sample variance. In order to calculate the
deviation value, we must first know about the variance value. Then, variance can be
calculated from the formula below:

𝑛
2
1
𝑆 = ∑(𝑥𝑖 − 𝑥̅ )2
𝑛−1
1

After calculating the sum operation using excel, the variance value is:

1
𝑆2 = ∗ (41.40)
16 − 1
𝑆 2 = 2.76

Then, the standard deviation is:

𝑆 = √2.76
𝑆 = 1.66

4. The same compressor is manufactured at three plants. Plant 1 makes 70% of the
requirement and plant 2 makes 20%. From plant 1, 90% of compressor meet standard,
from plant 2 only 80%, whereas from plant 3 the percentage of unit produced up to
standard is 95%. Determine:
a. How many compressors will be up to standard out of every 100 purchased by
customers?
b. Given that the purchased compressor is up to standard, what is the probability that it
was made in plant 2?
Given:
- P1 Production: 70% total
- P2 Production: 20% total
- P3 Production: 10% total
- P1 Standard Rate: 90%
- P2 Standard Rate: 80%
- P3 Standard Rate: 95%
Answer:
a. The probability of standard product and non-standard product from each plant:
- P1 Standard Product: 90% * 70% Total = 63% Total
- P1 Non-Standard Product: 10% * 70% Total = 7% Total
- P2 Standard Product: 80% * 20% Total = 16% Total
- P2 Non-Standard Product: 20% * 20% Total = 4% Total
- P3 Standard Product: 95% * 10% Total = 9.5% Total
- P3 Non-Standard Product: 5% * 10* Total = 0.5% Total
Amount of compressor that will be up to standard is
𝑃1𝑆𝑡𝑑 + 𝑃2𝑆𝑡𝑑 + 𝑃3𝑆𝑡𝑑 = 𝑃𝑆𝑡𝑑
63% 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 + 16% 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 + 9.5% 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 𝑃𝑆𝑡𝑑
88.5% 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 𝑃𝑆𝑡𝑑

From 100 purchased product, the standard quality compressor will be:
𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑆𝑡𝑑 = 𝑃𝑆𝑡𝑑 ∗ 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑠 𝐴𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡
𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑆𝑡𝑑 = 88.5% ∗ 100
𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑆𝑡𝑑 ≈ 𝟖𝟗 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒓𝒔
b. The probability of the purchased compressor is standard made in plant 2 is:

𝑃2𝑆𝑡𝑑
𝑃2𝑆𝑡𝑑,𝑃𝑢𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 =
𝑃𝑆𝑡𝑑
16% 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙
𝑃2𝑆𝑡𝑑,𝑃𝑢𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 =
88.5% 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙
𝑃2𝑆𝑡𝑑,𝑃𝑢𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 = 𝟎. 𝟏𝟖

5. A system consists of 17 different components, of which one, component K, has been

identified as the keystone component. The probability that the keystone component is good
is 0.95. If the keystone component is good, then the system succeeds with a probability
0.9. If not, then the probability of system success drops to 0.8. What is the probability of
system success?
Given:
- Good K Component: 0.95
- Bad K Component: 0.05
- System Success if K is Good: 0.9
- System Success if K is Bad: 0.8
Answer:
System success can be achieved from either K component is good or bad. So, we must
calculate the probability of both events.
- K Component is good

𝑃𝑆𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝐾 = 𝑃𝐾,𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 ∗ 𝑃𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠

𝑃𝑆𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝐾 = 0.95 ∗ 0.9
𝑃𝑆𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝐾 = 0.855
- K Component is bad

𝑃𝑆𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,𝑏𝑎𝑑 𝐾 = 𝑃𝐾,𝑏𝑎𝑑 ∗ 𝑃𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠

𝑃𝑆𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,𝑏𝑎𝑑 𝐾 = 0.05 ∗ 0.8
𝑃𝑆𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,𝑏𝑎𝑑 𝐾 = 0.04
- The probability of system success is:

𝑃𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠 = 𝑃𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝐾 + 𝑃𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠,𝑏𝑎𝑑 𝐾

𝑃𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠 = 0.855 + 0.04
𝑃𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠 = 𝟎. 𝟖𝟗𝟒
