Title: Duplex Stainless Steel Bars, Forgings and Plate; ASTM A182 Grade F51; ASTM A479 Type
S31803; ASTM A240 UNS S31803; UNS S31803 for NACE Service

1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 It is the purpose of this material specification to address the product requirements for wrought for
duplex stainless steel bars or forgings of the specified grade for use in manufacturing ball valves
components.
1.2 This specification is intended to aid the purchasing department in procurement, the vendor in selecting
material that meets the requirements herein, and inspection in conformance acceptance. Any material
found to be non-conforming for any reason may be subject to rejection.
2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This specification covers duplex stainless steel in the grade shown for NACE service.
2.2 Restrictions on the use of bar: Flanges of any type, elbows, tees shall not be machined directly from
bar stock. Cylindrically-shaped parts, NPS-4 (DN 100) and under, may be machined from forged or
rolled bar, without additional hot working
2.3 The usage of plate is limited to non-pressure bearing components, such as seats and trunion bearings.
2.4 Material per this specification shall fully meet the applicable requirements of ASTM A961, A484 or
A480, as applicable. This specification incorporates key requirements from those specifications.

4.0 CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 The heat chemical analysis shall conform to the following composition requirements in weight percent
maximum limits unless a range is given:

Lead or selenium for the purpose of improving machinability is not acceptable.
4.2 Plate per A240 shall contain no more than 0.75% Cu, 0.10% Ti and 0.10% Cb.
4.3 FPREN requirements (pitting resistance number based on chemical composition Per NACE
MR0175/ISO 15156-3):
4.3.1 The FPREN value shall be calculated based on the following formula and shall be 31-38:
4.3.2 FPREN = WCr+ 3.3 (WMo + 0.5 WW) + 16 WN, where W is the weight percent of the element.
5.0 HEAT TREATMENT
5.1 Material to be heat treated shall be bars, slugs, plate or rough shaped parts (not finish machined).
5.2 Material shall be in the solution treated and quenched condition (subsequent limited cold working of
bar is acceptable as long as the maximum allowable hardness is not exceeded).
5.2.1 Forgings per A182 shall be solution annealed at 1870 °F (1020 °C) minimum followed by
liquid quench to below 500 °F (260 °C).
5.2.2 Bar per A479 shall be solution annealed or process annealed at 1900 °F (1040 °C) minimum
followed by quench in water or rapidly cooled by other means.
5.2.3 Plate per A240 shall be solution annealed or process annealed at 1900 °F (1040 °C) minimum
followed by quench in water or rapidly cooled by other means.
5.3 Material shall be traceable to a specific job lot.
5.4 The heat treat furnace loading shall be such that the presence of one part does not adversely affect the
heat treat response of any part within the same heat treatment load.
6.0 MELTING PRACTICE
6.1 Material shall be produced in accordance with one or more of the following melting practice:
6.1.1 Electric Furnace, with optional separate degassing and refining processes
6.1.2 Vacuum Furnace
6.1.3 6.1.1 or 6.1.2 followed by VAR or ESR
7.0 FORMING PRACTICES
7.1 Material shall be hot worked above its re-crystallization temperature to produce a completely wrought
structure.
8.0 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
8.1 Material testing shall be performed on a per lot basis in accordance with ASTM A370 and the test
results shall conform to the following requirements: (longitudinal test specimen @ room temperature).
8.1.1 ASTM A182 Grade F51 - Specimens shall be obtained from the production forgings, or from
separately forged test blanks prepared from the stock used to make the finished product.

8.1.2 ASTM A479 Type S31803 – Hardness to be measured at mid-way between the surface and the
center of the cross-section.

hardness is met.
8.1.3 ASTM A240 UNS S31803 – When produced in coil form shall have two or more hardness
tests, one from each end and one tensile test. If the hardness difference between the two ends
of the coil exceeds 5 HRB, or equivalent, or if the material is temper rolled, tensile properties
must be determined on both coil ends. When produced from cut lengths, one hardness test and
one tensile test is required. Transverse specimen orientation is also acceptable.

9.0 FERRITE CONTENT
9.1 The ferrite content according to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3 shall be 35–65 %, determined in
accordance with ASTM E562.
10.0 CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
10.1 Material shall be traceable to a material certification and any test report(s). Material must be certified
to ASTM A182 Grade F51, ASTM A479 Type or UNS S31803, or ASTM A240 UNS S31803.
