Chapter 1 Summarization Nature Numbers

This chapter summary discusses how mathematics is present everywhere in patterns found in nature, not just in schools. It gives examples of patterns seen in the stars, animal stripes, rainbows, and snowflakes, which can all be mathematically explained. The astronomer Johannes Kepler used snowflake symmetry as an example of a natural pattern that followed a six-fold mathematical structure. Mathematics allows us to understand and appreciate the patterns found all around us in the environment.

Summarization of Chapter 1
Before I start reading chapter 1 of the article titled, “Nature’s Number: The Unreal
Reality of Mathematics.” I always ask myself, why Mathematics is relevant and how it
will change my life. The book explained that Mathematics is everywhere not just in
schools. If we look around in our environment, Mathematics is applied to start through
patterns. The aligning of the stars, stripes of the zebras and tigers, rainbows, and such.
All of the things we could see around us consist of patterns that can be mathematically
explained.
Johannes Kepler, a German astronomer, proved this by using snowflakes as an
example where he noticed there are tiny identical units together, the six-fold symmetry.
There are no experiments that happen, only pure observation of a natural thing. Some
patterns are explained through arithmetic operations and some are still trying to be
figured out for their unique pattern compared to the others. Followed by this beautiful
discovery came up with different theories just like the well-known theory of gravity by
Isaac Newton. Indeed, Mathematics plays a huge role where applying the knowledge
from it to understand and appreciate the patterns around us.
