piping systems
The following items shall not be insulated unless otherwise noted on the drawings or
herein:
Drains
Dummy supports
Flanges in hydrogen service (see note)
Internally insulated piping and vessel components
Name plates
Plate heat exchangers and air coolers
Stampings
Steam traps
Unions (except instrument line unions)
Vents
Strainers
Gauges
Note: for all services processing hydrogen or H2S, the insulation will be applied on
flanges and flanged valves only when allowed by Project specifications.
For hot service insulation thicknesses are calculated by means of 3EPlus v4.1 Insulation
Thickness Computer Program and according to the heat transfer model of ASTM C 680
considering the minimum winter ambient temperature and the operating temperature of
the fluid. Thicknesses will maintain a maximum theoretical heat loss of 200 W/m2 . For
personnel protection temperature limit is 60°C.
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.
Personnel protection shall extend 2150 mm vertically and 600 mm horizontally from
normal access route (walkway, ladder, etc.) on pipework .
Except otherwise specified, items such as pumps, compressors, valves and flanges do
not require personnel protection.
Personnel protection shall be applied only in areas where personnel contact possibilities
exist.
When heat dissipation is required in high temperature services, insulation shall not be
provided. Wire mesh shall be used for high temperature surfaces to avoid the possibility
of personnel contact. The minimum distance of mesh installation shall be 100 mm. With
reference to the Insulation Thickness Table for personal protection (Appendix 1, Table
2), for thicknesses greater than 100 mm the distance will be equal to the insulation
thickness indicated in the table.
Where fire protection insulation is required, cellular glass may be used with the following
considerations: cellular glass is to be double layered with each layer a minimum
thickness of 78 mm. Each layer is to be secured with 304 stainless steel bands (10 mm
to 20 mm wide with a minimum thickness of 0.5 mm). Metal jacketing shall be 304
stainless steel per ASTM A-167.
Aluminum sheets shall not be used as the metallic jacket for fire protection of insulation.
Service temperature maximum limit for cellular glass is 427°C.
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.
Insulation material supplied shall be Mineral Fiber, in accordance with the material
specifications in Appendix 2.
These materials shall be procured before commencement of operations, unless the shelf
life of the products is shorter than the duration of the works, and shall be stored in their
original packaging according to instructions in the Supplier's data sheets. In some cases,
it may be necessary to store them in air-conditioned premises to prevent them becoming
denatured.
Jacketing shall be provided with a heat laminated factory-installed moisture barrier 25 microns
(one mil), high density polyethylene backing and natural kraft paper shall be factory attached.
As a general guideline, insulation shall not take place until the following operation (but
not limited to) have been performed:
6.1. General
The insulation shall be placed on dry, clean and degreased surfaces. Insulation shall
only be fitted if the substrate temperature is at least 3°C above the dew point.
No work shall be carried out while there is precipitation in the air, except under shelter
and in a controlled atmosphere.
items.
Insulation shall be mounted in zigzag fashion, and in the case of multi-layer insulation,
the upper layer joints shall be offset from those of the lower layers.
Each layer of insulation shall be secured independently. The tension of the retaining
straps shall be such that the insulation is not damaged.
In case of thickness greater than 76 mm, double layer insulation shall be used. All
multiple layer pipe insulation shall be furnished factory nested to ensure proper fit when
installed. Each layer shall have a thickness of 50% of the tabulated value, with 30 mm
minimum thickness.
All insulation materials and jacketing shall be asbestos free.
Before starting to fit the protective jacketing, make sure that the insulation and the
insulation limits comply with the specifications.
Application of the protective jacketing shall immediately follow installation of the
insulation.
Overlaps in the protective jacketing shall also be offset from those of the insulation.
Protective jacketing shall be applied in accordance with the assembly principles in
Appendix 3.
For vertical joints, the direction of overlap shall take into account the prevailing wind
direction.
At accessories such as supports, nozzles, inspection hatches and nameplates, the cut-
outs shall be made with precision and finishing collars shall be applied to make the cuts
rigid and minimize the ingress of water. Mastic sealant shall be used as appropriate.
Bolts/screws used for securing jacketing sheets shall be compatible with the type of
sheet.
Expansion joints shall be provided to absorb differential movements due to thermal
variations.
Insulation of accessories such as flanges and valves shall be provided by removable
boxes (resistant to bad weather and fire tests), in two elements, depending on their
configuration and weight.
Galvanized steel materials shall never be used for fastening insulation to stainless steel
piping.
Type and dimension of fixing materials shall be according to the following description:
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.

7. INSULATION APPLICATION
Insulation materials shall be applied in accordance with Appendix 3 and following the
information of the Suppliers.
Cylindrical equipment and piping with outside diameters of 14”(350 mm) and less under
the insulation shall be as per ASTM C547 Type III grade A. For cylindrical piping and
equipment with outside diameter 16” (406 mm) and larger, insulation shall be as per
ASTM C592.
7.1. Piping
Metallic cladding for elbows shall be created by the use of cut segments or stamped
elbows.
On piping less than 2 inches diameter, the elbows may be squared.
For details of insulation refer installation principle on Appendix 3.
Overpass areas on piping insulation shall have profiled walking sheet.
Flanges and valves on piping in hydrogen service shall be insulated with ventilated
which it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.
boxes. These shall be insulated only, when protective insulation is needed or the tracing
requires insulation.
The piping to be insulated shall be indicated in the P&I diagrams, Line Designation Table
(LDT), engineering detail documents and piping isometrics.
In case of conflict, items indicated in the P&I diagrams shall govern.
The equipment to be insulated shall be indicated in the Equipment data sheet.

inspection (OSI) monitoring), the supply and installation of inspection windows shall be
carried out at any height by Construction Contractor. The locations to be monitored (then
subject to the removable inspection windows) shall be detailed by Owner during the
engineering phase.
Procurement of materials to be done in accordance by Construction Contractor.
A cylindrical plug, realized with aluminium or aluminized steel sheets, will be shaped to
fit exactly the corresponding hole and it will be filled with the proper insulation material
and adequately sealed to ensure insulation properties continuity.
Both the inner and outer bases of the cylindrical plug shall be shaped to follow and fit the
surfaces of the pipe (or the replacement of insulation material) and external metal
jacketing, respectively.
The external base of the cylindrical plug shall exceed the diameter of the corresponding
hole, realizing a proper overlap with the adjacent metal jacketing, so avoiding water
ingress and giving enough space for the installation of a mechanical retention
mechanism of the plug (screws, clamps, locking rings etc.); finishing with a removable
water-sealing mastic or an elastomeric sleeve is also indicated.
The external face of the plug shall be provided with handles; for identification purposes,
finishing with an easy identifiable color and proper stenciling with numbers will be
realized.
