UNDERSTANDING OF RATE AND SPEED, AND OF AREA AND
SURFACE AREA OF PLANE AND SOLID/SPACE FIGURES

Learning Competencies
1. Finds the surface area of cubes, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and
spheres
2. Solves word problems involving measurement of surface area Code:
M6ME-IIIi-93 and M6ME-IIIj-94

Let’s Recall (Review)

The area of a polygon is the number of square units inside it. It is measured in square
units, such as square centimeters (cm2), square meters (m2), square millimeters (mm2),
and square inches (in2).
To find the area of some polygons and the circle, we use the following formulas:
Square : A = s2 Parallelogram : A = b x h
Rectangle: A = l x w Circle: A = π x r2
Triangle: A = (b x h) / 2

Solve for the area of the following shapes.

1. Rectangle l = 15 cm w = 4 cm A = ______________
2. Square s = 9 mm A = ______________
3. Triangle b=6m h=4m A = ______________
4. Parallelogram b = 15 in h = 8 in A = ______________
5. Circle r = 4 cm A = ______________

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

A cube is an illustration of a space figure. A space figure or three-dimensional figure is a
figure with length, width, and height as its dimensions. Other common space figures are
prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres.

Figure 1 shows a cube with its net, figure 2 shows a rectangular prism with its net
and figure 3 shows a square pyramid with its net.
The total surface area of these space figures can be solved by adding the area of all
its faces.
Total surface area of cube
A cube is a rectangular solid with all square faces.
TSA = 6 x side x side or 6 x s2 or 6s2

Let us now solve for the total surface area of other spatial figures such as rectangular
prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, and sphere.
Total surface area of rectangular prism
The faces of a rectangular prism are all rectangles.
TSA = ( 2 x length x width ) + ( 2 x length x height ) + ( 2 x width x height)

Total surface area of a pyramid

A pyramid is a solid figure named by the shape of its base. The base is a polygon and the
other faces are triangles.

Total surface area of triangular pyramid

TSA = area of the triangular base + area of the 3 lateral faces
Total surface area of rectangular pyramid
TSA = area of the rectangular base + area of the 4 lateral faces
Total surface area of square pyramid
TSA = area of the square base + area of the 4 lateral faces

Total surface area of a cylinder

A cylinder is a solid figure that has two circular bases that are congruent and lie in parallel
planes. It has one curved face.

Total surface area of a cone Total surface area of a sphere

A cone is a sol id figure that has a A sphere is a solid figure with a surface that
circular base and one vertex. is always the same distance from its center.

The formulas in solving for the surface area of different spatial figures are the
following:
• Cube = 6 x s2
• Rectangular prism = (2 x l x w) + (2 x l x h) + (2 x w x h)
• Pyramid = area of the base + area of the lateral faces
• Cylinder = (2 x π x r x r) + (2 x π x r x h)
• Cone = (π x r x r) + (π x r x slant height)
Problem Solving
Problem 1
Rebecca bought a rectangular aquarium as her birthday gift to her daughter. The rectangular
aquarium has the following dimension: 90 cm high with a base of 40 cm by 20 cm. How
much gift wrapper is required to wrap the aquarium?
Understand:
c. What is asked? The measurement of the gift wrapper required to wrap the
aquarium.
d. What are the given fact? 90 cm high with a base of 40 cm by 20 cm Plan:
Which formula shall be used to solve the problem?
The shape of the party-hat is cone, so the formula to be used is (2 x l x w) + (2 x l
x h) + (2 x w x h) Solve:
SA = (2 x l x w) + (2 x l x h) + (2 x w x h)
SA = (2 x 40 x 20) + (2 x 40 x 90) + (2 x 20 x 90)
SA = 1 600 + 7 200 + 3 600
SA = 12 400 cm2
Answer: The measurement of the gift wrapper required to wrap the aquarium is 12
400 cm2.
Check: Go back to your computation. Check if the given dimensions are properly
substituted to the formula. Check each step of your computation.

Problem 2
It is Ruth’s 7th birthday. Raquel is in-charge to make the party hats. The party hat is in cone-
shaped with the diameter of 12.2 cm and a slant height of 10.6 cm. What is the surface
area of each party hat?
Understand:
a. What is asked? The surface area of each party hat.
b. What are the given fact? diameter of 12.2 cm and a slant height of 10.6 cm Plan:
Which formula shall be used to solve the problem?
The shape of the aquarium is rectangular prism, so the formula to be used is (π x r x
r) + (π x r x slant height)
The needed information in the formula is the radius of the circle instead of the
diameter. We know that the measurement of 2 radii is equal to the measurement of a
diameter. So the measurement of the radius is 6.1 cm.
The value of pi (π ) is 3.14. Solve:
SA = (π x r x r) + (π x r x slant height)
SA = (3.14 x 6.1 x 6.1) + (3.14 x 6.1 x 10.6)
SA = 116.8394 + 203.0324
SA = 319.8718 cm 2
Answer: The surface area of each party hat is 319.8718 cm 2.
Check: Go back to your computation. Check if the given dimensions are properly substituted
to the formula. Check each step of your computation.
