STA2216 Mini Project

This study examines the effect of wing length and width on the flight time of paper gyrocopters. 24 gyrocopter models with different combinations of long/medium/short wing lengths and wide/narrow widths were dropped and their flight times measured. Statistical analysis found that wing length, width, and their interaction all significantly affected flight time, with longer or wider wings associated with longer flight times. The study concludes that wing length, width, and their interaction influence a gyrocopter's gliding ability.

Introduction:

A gyrocopter is an aircraft with a non-powered top rotor. The function of the top-rotor is a
gliding mechanism while the motorized back rotor lifts and propels the gyrocopter. In this
project, we want to focus the paper version of the gyrocopter without a propeller. There are a
lot of factors have the potential to affect the gliding ability of the gyrocopter. The most
controllable factors are only two aspects which are the wing length and the wing width.
Method:
Use all 6 gyrocopter templates provided in pages 3-5 with wing length of long, medium and
short as well as wing width of wide and narrow. Cut out all the gyrocopter templates
carefully. Practice dropping one of the gyrocopters and measuring the flight time (in second),
until you are comfortable with your timing technique. It is best to have a helper, one person
as the “flyer” and the other person as the “timer”. You need to try 4 replications for each
model and total 24 flying trials for all the gyrocopter model. You should fly with different
models in a random order.
The need of the control is wants to make sure the result is accurate and consistent. Besides
that, we also need the replications in the experiment to reduce the variability in the results.
The function of the randomization is uses to avoid the selection bias and the accidental bias.

Flight time of gyrocopter models with different wing width

Question 1: Is there a wing length effect?

Question 1: Is there a wing width effect?
Question 3: Is there an interaction effect?

H01: This is no effect due to wing length

H02: This is no effect due to wing width
H03: There is no interaction between length and width

-For wing length, since the p-value (0.000) is smaller than =0.05, we can reject the first null
hypothesis.
Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude at 5% level of significance that there is statistically
effect due to wing length.
-For wing width, since the p-value (0.000) is smaller than =0.05, we can reject the second
null hypothesis.
Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude at 5% level of significance that there is statistically
effect due to wing width.
-For interaction, since the p-value (0.000) is smaller than =0.05, we can reject the third null
hypothesis.

Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude at 5% level of significance that there is statistically
effect due to interaction.
