REFLECTION NO. 2 (Ribas, Kristopher Carlos T. - JD1C)

This document discusses the importance of protecting human rights and responsibilities. It notes that the Philippine constitution established rights like life, property, and liberty in response to injustices under colonial rule. However, these rights continue to be threatened, including by government actors. As law students, the author says we must uphold these rights and help the oppressed and marginalized. Our duties involve more than just learning about rights - we must protect our neighbors' rights through advocacy and ethical actions. Small positive actions each person takes can collectively help strengthen society and protect human dignity.

Philosophy of Law Reflection No.2

“BE THE LIGHT TO OTHERS”

The well-grounded establishment of our Bill of Rights in our Constitution safeguards our
essential values and shields our rights from any form of temporal manipulations and coercion. The
genesis of these formulations can be traced to the Spanish Era when a lot of injustices and abuses
of rights occurred. As an answer to these, we came up with the formulation of these Rights which
serves us our armor against those wicked people who belittle us.
It’s just so sad to imagine that before, we only suffered a lot of injustices from other
colonizers but this time a lot of us suffered from our fellow Filipinos. In addition to this, it’s
heartbreaking to realize that even our government somewhat took part in these injustices
happening in the present. I’m dismayed that it is us who failed ourselves.
The previous webinar of Dean Domnina Rances about “The Constitutional Bill of Rights”
sets to be an eyeopener and a cry for us to give our helping hand to one another. We are confronted
with a vast of iniquities and disservices even from the government who is supposedly the one
protecting us. It’s just so disappointing that our government, public officials, and persons who are
in authority whom we consider our mothers who would take care and nurture us are the ones
abandoning us. This webinar is again a call for us to open our eyes and be vigilant of the things
happening around us. Let us not forget the basic-- to protect our rights to life, property, and liberty.
As a law student, it’s also a set of inspirations to be a bringer of hope to other people,
especially to those who are oppressed and marginalized. Some of us are privileged to have
ourselves educated and have an opportunity to go to school and learn these teachings. But how
about those who weren’t? This must be the question that will strengthen our conviction to care for
our neighbors also. Our duties will not end in just knowing and just memorizing the provisions
and the list of our rights. We need to ask ourselves: “What is needed to be done?”. That is why
rights and responsibilities must go hand and hand. Our dignity can be protected, and we will have
a harmonious community if human rights are protected and responsibilities not only to ourselves
but also to our neighbors are met. Following these rights are our duties and responsibilities to one
another, to our families, to our neighbors, and to our society. Our rights must be enlightened with
our responsibilities. Otherwise, if one is absent, or if they are separated, it opens an opportunity
for discrimination, injustices, oppression, human trafficking, neglect, and abuse. Sadly, these gaps
are now happening in our present situation. We must not forget our foundation, in order to achieve
a peaceful and harmonious society, we needed to lay down as a strong ground the principle that
human beings are persons empowered with intellect and free will. It is in our nature that we have
to protect our rights and perform our duties well.
Indeed, it is a call for us to look after each other and protect one another. There are a lot of
simple things that we can do to prevent these injustices that are happening nowadays. It is not
enough to just know these principles that were handed to us. Our responsibilities must be seen
toward our neighbors. It must not stop in just learning, it must go on with performing. We need to
give life to these principles and teachings and become advocates for the preservation and respect
of our rights and our human dignity. Every simple gesture, even by teaching other people what is
the right thing to do is of great impact on the betterment of our society. We can teach them to “do
the right thing and avoid evil” and enlighten others about what is really the right thing to do. In all
that we do, we should always inculcate in us being generous, in a spirit of service, and in solidarity
with others. Every little brick that we put in order to build that strong building we are aiming for
is an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to contributing to the common good. We should
not turn our blind eye to anyone and be a light to other people. Things that for us are simple like,
participating in advocacies, relaying to others the ethical principles, taking care of our nature,
voting wisely, being sensitive with our speech, and thinking before posting to our social media
accounts are examples of the little bricks that build a fortified building.
We are never alone when we stand to champion and protect our human rights. We are to
be a catalyst for change. Every greater impact that we want to witness in this society must first
start within ourselves. The future of our nature depends on each one of us. We just need to ask and
remind ourselves of our “WHY?” in order to guide us on where to start and have that urge to make
a change. With these, “We are not allowing ourselves to settle living in dark and dangerous times”
